You have a 2d plane, a square.

Put content on that plane, images, video, whatever. You then scale it up and down and discard those that are to big to be relevant and create those that are so small but just about to be relevant.

You can not use zoom with the camera because the camera has to live in a 3d space and that 3d space has limits.

Think of this a glorified Level Of Detail system.
