Cutting Edge Prosthetic Arms (no pun intended)

Why buying a Mac is simply fucking rediculous. (Blog Entry by MarineGunrock)

Hawkinson says...

I am not a hipster (I grew up in/live in echo park, and I hate their parking spot taking/beard growing ways), but I have to say that most of the time, a mac is a good deal.

It just works.

Another reason is the bundled and subsidized software. iMovie and Final Cut Express are unmatched on PC. I LOL when I see the MS PC commercial that shows some woman buying a computer for video editing for less that 2 grand. What is she going to use to capture and edit video? Adobe's Premiere costs almost 2k.. iMovie is free, and is more than enough for 95% of home users. Need more features? Final Cut Express is subsidized, $99. Want to spend a shit load of money? get the full final cut package, it will cost the same amount as Premiere Pro.

I have never bought a mac. I have a retail license for windows xp pro that cost $150. I did this because, at the time, there was more open source video encoding software availible on Win32.

However, I will never upgrade to Vista, and will likely never upgrade to Windows 7. Linux desktops are mature enough for everyday use, especially since 95% of poeple ONLY use their web browsers (my sister-in-law has used her computer for 12 months and has not created a single document).

Need a document? Open Office is okay (not great), and works on Win32, Mac, and Linux. Open Office Base works very well.

Summary: most users would be better off with the closed hardware and subsidized software that comes with mac. Nerds should be using Linux 100% of the time. Microsoft should be severely punished for their OS blunders (home users chose them only because it is the de facto standard in busness, but the majority of businesses are still using XP, two years after Vista's introduction, so there is NO reason for home users to use Vista.)

Racism in 2009: Black Kids Kicked Out Of Philly Pool

While it was certainly a shitty thing to do, don't kid yourself into thinking that a group of white kids going to a predominantly black pool would be welcomed with open arms either. The stereotyping and paranoia goes both ways.

it may go both ways, but not with the same consequences. That's like saying a kid getting beat by his parents is less a victim because he/she is being disrespectful (and the beating is a form of mutual disrespect).

and I'm tired of the "white person in a black neighborhood" crap for the same reason. a young white person may expect to be accosted in a black neighborhood (which may be a bullshit assumption, especially since the whitest girl at work just went on a Roscoe's run), but a young black person expects to be accosted by police at ANY moment they are out in public (which is somewhat more justified, because young black people are in public more often that young white people are in black neighborhoods, so their is plenty of evidence, including personal experience, that you will get patted down for being brown).

please substitute the ethnic/cultural/religious sectarianism of your choice in the above paragraph.

That. was. AWESOME.

Where were they testing that, the grand canyon?

Who are Michael Jackson, Ed McMahon, and Farrah Fawcet expecting for Christmas? Patrick Swayze. (not related to the video, but the best joke I heard today).

hold on, its a private club, right? My private property isn't open to the public either, I have a strict "no leprechauns" policy.
It's important to recognize the difference between private and public spaces, we certainly get enough "police violating peoples rights" videos to know that your lawn is your lawn, and you can do whatever the hell you want on it. Being an asshole is not against the law.

It's not against the law to be an asshole, no. But when a group pays $1900 to swim in your pool and you kick them out you are being a major douche bag, whatever reason you choose to give.

That was my point. I didn't give a reason for their behavior, how about this: they are racists. Being racist is not against the law. I'm not clear on the point of this video, or why it is news worthy? Did they say the money wasn't returned and there is a lawsuit pending? Do they use public money? Are they associated with anything wholesome/political? I need something like that to sink my teeth into, otherwise it's just clucking my tongue at my intolerant neighbors.

Oral Sex is the New Kiss Goodnight

Hawkinson says...

I agree with Xax, and I hope you understood his point: if you have good parents you are more likely than not to talk with them freely. However, I don't think that means no oral sex, it just means you'll see it coming (no pun intended).

I was completely prepared to hate on this. Good job. I was heartbroken when the supercollider in Texas fell through (and I might even have a completely different life right now if it hadn't, since I have a BS in physics I never use).

Violence - End it!

Hawkinson says...

I don't know, I think those are actors.

(in all seriousness, I found the partick steward psa on domestic violence more affecting, precisely because I KNEW he was an actor speaking as a real person, as opposed to these actors pretending to be real people.)

Smart Parking

Hawkinson says...

I always find failed parking videos amusing.

I learned to drive and got my license at 27, and parking has never been a problem, even with the large AmeriCAN car I currently own. I like to blame video games.
