If Quake was developed today...

Hawkinson says...

I cracked a smile at some parts (the multiple middleware logos), but I don't agree with the overall sentiment. Doom/quake/descent/etc appealed to a few thousand PC owners when they were released, the modern-military-competitive-online-multiplayer-first-person-shooters are purchased by millions of console owners on day one.

I don't resent their success, I just don't play them, and unlike sports (which I also have no interest in) it doesn't interfere with the things I actually want to consume by preempting programming or causing traffic.

How much time should I get when I put your 13 year old daughter's hand on my junk and tell her to fuck me?

But seriously, 10 years is a crazy sentence, look at all those priest who had WAY more power over kids and got WAY more action. And it would be really funny if that same 13 year old killed someone and was charged as an adult and got life in prison as well.

I clicked on the comments because the video was hilarious and I wanted to see if anyone else noted the underweight and terrified assistant holding the pads, but all I get is internet hater bullshit. Really, if you hate everything so much, WHY THE HELL ARE YOU ALWAYS HERE!

3 years designing the ultimate Sim City

Hawkinson says...

What's with the dickish attitude? its a videogame, I don't think anyone is confused over that fact. A quake speed run or a sub 25% metroid prime completion rate is still impressive, just like a pitching a perfect game (which also isn't real life, since there are arbitrary rules like regulation bats).

Unless you've never played a (video)game before, you're just being a jerk.

He does realize that he has only found the optimum method for building IN THIS GAME doesn't he? Like... he's worked out the algorithm as built by the coders. He hasn't actually designed any optimum city design. He's built to only those factors the game designers put in.
Seems very odd to spend SO MUCH TIME on such an endeavor that is effectively just doing really well at a simplified game simulation.
Like... if one of the coders went 'oh yeah, we completely forgot to include the effects of recycling or sewage levels' or some such then his entire span of time doing that was pretty much for naught.

Now, if someone had come up with that design and implemented it in a short time, then I'd be impressed... but this? I appreciate someone using their minds like this, but to be so proud to have worked out a method of 'beating' an almost definitely flawed simulation is strange and alien to me.

Huge cyst coaxed from a brain

Hawkinson says...

from http://scienceblogs.com/retrospectacle/2008/01/brain_hydatid_cyst_with_surgic.php (not verified by me)

"The cyst is a hydatid cyst, which is the result of a parasitic infection by tapeworm larvae(Echinococcus). Generally speaking, it does not occur in the USA, but rather occurs in Mediterranean countries, the Middle East, the southern part of South America, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, and southern parts of Africa. The cysts, which are initiated by one larvae, eventually come to house thousands of tapeworm larvae. So it is very important not to rupture the cyst during its removal, else the host could easily die. The cysts can occur in any organ, in this case, the brain... "

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Use Their Weapons

Hawkinson says...

It was really weird seeing the g-rated cartoon, especially since they kept their weapons (at first).

I owned a couple of the original comics as a kid. It was a violent comic for its time (I ate it up for all the wrong reasons).

There was a brilliant return to the original continuity a few years ago, art and writing by Eastman and Laird, picking up shortly after the death of shredder (killed by Leonardo back in issue 17 or so), with the turtles, Casey Jones, April, and Shredder going their separate ways and trying to find a purpose (e.g. killing shredder left a small army of foot ninja's, and the turtles weren't sure if they should hunt them all down or what). It gave me a second chance to appreciate their story telling beyond "cool, he shoved his broken staff into that guys head!".

The state has no obligation to protect you or treat you. If a cop watched a murder happening in front of him and decided to do nothing, that's just too bad isn't it? That's a great service you're forced to pay for there.

This is not black and white, ambulances were dispatched and could not make it through the snow. The only issue is if there was a policy regarding leaving the ambulance on foot in a life or death situation.

Blankfist, don't confuse police with 911, they are completely separate, and some municipalities (not monolithic state) don't even offer 911 (areas in South Dakota come to mind) because they don't want to charge/pay for it. Freedom!

Regarding your claim regarding police protection: This is completely untrue. The court ruling you cite only confirms that the police have discretion when it comes to ARREST, it says nothing of their responsibility when witnessing a crime (the officers in that case wrongly determined that there was no danger, but that mistaken determination wasn't criminal)

Regarding the supreme court: don't confuse civil liability with the policies of the 911 or police system in question. Are there mistakes, yes. Is policy always followed? No. Are all mistakes and violations of policy grounds for lawsuits? Absolutely not. The supreme courts focus is on fundamental rights granted by the constitution, due process and such, if those are not violated in the grounds of the case you are referring too (and the closely related child abuse case).

This event should NOT be used as anti-government propaganda, it doesn't even involve the federal or state governments, this is a local issue. If there is local outrage, then policies need to change and maybe more money needs to be spent on the emergency response system. I'm sure people die like this all the time in states with little or no emergency response and no one complains because they choose NOT to pay for such a system and the put responsibility in the hands of the individual to get to the hospital.

Zero Punctuation: Torchlight

Hawkinson says...

>> ^Sylvester_Ink:
I think I'm over Yahtzee's ZP reviews. I was already disappointed of his off-hand dismissal of the RTS genre, but this takes things a bit too far. Riffing on a bad game is funny. Riffing on a good game that sells well (like a certain Call of Duty game) is funny. Riffing on a good game that is relatively unknown, like Torchlight, leaves a sour taste. Neither Painkiller or Psychonauts is a perfect game in their own right. Both, in fact, have many of their own flaws. Yet they get glowing reviews. Torchlight distills the Diablo-esque RPG to its best elements, and all it gets is an "it's good because it's cheap."

Are you saying the comedic value of this review is dependant on whether you agree with his review? Reviews are opinion, there are no objectively good games. Also, he didn't say it was good because it was cheap, he said it wasn't worth the $3 he paid for it.

For the most part I do not agree with Yahtzee's opinions (I like JRPG's and singing in Rock Band), so I don't view them as reviews and they don't factor into by buying choices. Its just comedy.

Japanese Whaling Ship Shears Bow off High Speed Anti-Whaler

Hawkinson says...

Again I have to ask, in what court are you suggesting they sue for damages? How far will this get in a japanese court? and what are the limitations on damages awarded in these cases in japan anyway? It certainly wouldn't be decided by an emotional jury, so I'm pretty sure a lawsuit is a non starter.

I suppose you could try to sue in an Australian (or even American) court, if you can convince the judge he has jurisdiction, but there is no way you'd collect anything if you won.

"I'm gonna sue you" or "there aught to be a law" just doesn't make sense in this context.
