A Long Chris Hedges Interview On Our Failing Political Systm

Barbar says...

Dystopianfuturetoday:

I'm not looking to debate anything here, I'm just curious as to your reasoning for considering Hitchens as an (at least) one time neo-con. What information led you to this opinion? As it seems distinctly opposed to what I've read in his memoirs and other writings.

Pickup driver tries to kill a motorcyclist

Barbar says...

I can understand being pissed at the motorcyclists for speeding and passing illegally, along a winding street with houses on it, in particular if it is a street that they habitually use for this. But, starting a race, where you spend a good portion of the time in the oncoming lane, after trying to kill one of them, is hardly a recipe for greater safety. With any luck they'll all get in trouble, although much more so for the fella in the pickup truck.

After The Rapture (TheThinkingAtheist)

Barbar says...

>> ^shinyblurry:
Fact of the matter is, one of Gods two greatest commandments is to love your neighbor as yourself. If you're not following that, you are pretty much a Christian in name only. It says in the bible, if you hate your brother you cannot love God. So Christians do love atheists. The fact that some people who call themselves Christian act like this doesn't change that.

Was that before or after He ordered their execution and the wholesale extermination of their civilization?

Go figure, we can both pick pieced of the Bible that say entirely different things.

Either way it's a lame video trying to score cheap points on a collection of particularly ignorant folks, and instead needling the greater majority of Christians who are pretty decent folk. Doesn't deserve the high vote tally it has.

How to chop wood without messing around.

Barbar says...

Is that sleeve he has on the axe haft padding or something? The haft (from just the end that can be seen) appears to be wooden. Seems like otherwise he would demolish the haft in no time using it like that, as every blow lands the haft against the log. Having broken a few hafts, I can say that if I used my axe like that, the haft would be broken inside a day or two. Maybe it's one of them new-fangled plastic hafts made to look wooden.

Minnesota State Lawmaker Asks Perfect Question about Gays

Barbar says...

As mentioned above, marriage is a contract between two people AND the state. It is offered by the state to the people as a means to provide them some benefits (ie. tax breaks) with only nebulous returns (ie. community stability and offspring). It would be irresponsible to allow individuals the power to rewrite the contract to suit their personal needs, as those needs may not mesh with the community's. If every marriage had to be reconsidered case by case (such as marrying your mousepad) then it would become a sham.

However, it is clearly high time to reconsider the system, as there are very significant numbers of people that it simply does not suit. Before that can be done properly, their needs to be some consideration of what exactly the state gains from marriage. When it comes to gay marriage, the obvious discrepancy is children. Is that all? Does adoption cover this? Does this affect the children? There's a ton of considerations.

As for using the bible to decide how to behave, well that's somewhat laughable. Depending on the part of the bible you personally decide is more divinely inspired, you'll either stone them, cast them out, or support them (FYI I'm pulling that outta my ass, but I bet I could find support somewhere in the mess).

Judge Napolitano explains the history of taxation in the US

Barbar says...

Frankly, I'm surprised it took as long as it did for the rating to be downgraded. This has been in the pipes for quite a while. I rather expect it was being suppressed for a time, but now it can no longer be played down with a straight face.

French Law Threatens Women for Wearing Burka

Barbar says...

I support the discouragement of the wearing of Burkas. An outright ban, by the government seems harsh though.

What's going to happen if the above burka-clad driver is stopped by a male police officer and asked for her driver's license? Is she going to remove her burka to prove that it is her license? Or, is society going to have to pay to support her religious habit by providing a means to accomodate this fetish? Similarly, if I walked into a convenience store, or bank, with my face completely concealed, I would expect to not receive service. These places take security pretty seriously. They have cameras to record the faces of those they serve, just in case.

Burkas, above providing modesty, provide anonymity. It's my opinion that anonymity is a very dangerous thing in a community. A burka is, by design, an impediment to functional social interaction between a women and anybody not of her household. To me this is a handicap to a fully functioning society.

Hitler the humanist? Hitchslapped!

Barbar says...

There are a select few individuals, Christopher amongst them, with whom arguing is a bad idea. You could be on the side of arguing that 1+1 is 2, and Christopher is still likely to win the debate.

9 Reasons Why Youre a Christian

Barbar says...

I find myself in the position of defending a video that doesn't really deserve much attention.

I don't believe he is claiming that every Christian and Muslim fits all of those rules. I suspect he means that those are the 9 likeliest causes to believe in them, with a couple of pointlessly insulting additions. It may be that you fit into none of those categories. If so, I expect you're both ( Dignant_Pink and shinyblurry ) honest enough to admit that the vastly overwhelming majority of adherents do fit into at least some of those categories.

The main point to be gleaned from this video, I would submit, is that a person's selection of a particular religion above all others is in fact generally made for them by their surroundings, before they themselves are able to reason critically.
