a new *dupe invocation

*dupe would work just like *discard, except if the original is declared dead the embed code of the dupe would be automatically swapped in to replace it. So the *dupe invocation would need a URL parameter or something.

I think that would be great, but only in cases where the duplicate was identical in content and lenth to the original. In some cases duplicates are actually only a portion of the original submission. I addressed this issue in a previous Sift Talk post. Also, how would the *dupe know which was the original post?

I support the idea, although I'd probably not be eligible to use it (yet-gold stars, probably?). As for which post is the original - naturally, it shouldn't be too much of a problem for Siftbot's mighty brain to compare the queuing/submission date and time (yes, I am all for discarding the one that's submitted later, even though the first is lacking in votes due to worse labeling). I'm guessing the URL is what might cause some problems, though.

I also agree with GreatBird that either current Posting Guidelines 27.5 ought to be defined more clearly or this invocation may only be used in cases of completely identical content.

There is also the discussion of whether shorter clips, where a longer version has been posted before. I remember a Bill Hicks standup show, where parts of it were posted afterwards - this should be acceptable to some degree. (Maybe, *long videos can be posted in bits, or *short videos can be posted of a regular video).

In any case, a *dupe (URL) would be a great streamlining of the process, but to prevent misuse, accidental or otherwise, maybe the dupe should be back by at least on other sifter - and maybe at least one of the two should be gold.

I think that although this sounds good in theory, it is probably a bad idea in practice. I have seen a bunch of times where someone has declared a *dupe (I'll admit, I've done it) and it turns out that it is not a dupe. Even our resident dupe-finding machine, MGR has done it. So to out right discard a video might be a bad idea. The current system of " *dupe, www.videosift.com/sifted/duplicate video *discard" seems to work just fine.
