Congrats reln, use your powers wisely.

I've favourited this post and am hereby declaring based on a quickly formulated but long-brewed policy that we're going to be officially frowning upon any self-congratulatory posts for bronzes and silvers.

reln - please note that this is nothing against you - congrats again. But at some point someone would continue making such a posts - we've had similar instances of over-enthusiastic use of Sift Talk - so "now" is as good a time as any to ask others to refrain from patting themselves on the back.

We're keeping reln's up as a notice for future star winners that in the spirit of the Videosift (you can't *-promote or *-save or even SUBMIT your own videos), please do not make posts congratulating yourself on accomplishments as it's considered gauche or, in other words, a bit too self-serving.

Note that this means there are two exceptions

1. If someone else chooses to congratulate you - they'll no doubt have a good reason, perhaps you've been commenting enthusiastically or submitting exceptionally high quality videos, or you ended the civil war in Iraq - then they're free to do so. We just want to avoid you patting yourself on the back too hard.

2. If we overlook someone's promotion to a gold star rank, that person is entitled to stand up on the podium.

The second exception is because of the huge impact of becoming a goldie - although we hope by that point in time the goldie will find someone to nudge to acknowledge their achievement if at all possible.

Of course, most people who reach such lofty heights may or perhaps celebrate both their ascension along with that of another recent 'promotion' to a higher star/gem (in which case, you're already using the much more egalitarian exception #1).

Ironically, the Oscars were never meant to be taken seriously - the actors of the old studio days thought it absurd to reward themselves for making millions of dollars ("here's a medal/trophy for being a rich entertainer") - my source on this is the book "Who the Hell's in it", by Peter Bogdanovich.

Of course, it has since spiralled out of control, as have so many things.

Please note that, as I was careful to point out with the first and third paragraphs, the declaration isn't meant to be a dig at you, but a policy for future postings; if anything, it's only a coincidence we chose your posting as the moment to make the announcement. You can, if you so chose, feel honoured at the minor drama of being in the middle of a policy announcement.

Also, please note that people "favorite" posts so they can receive responses by e-mail telling them a new comment has been posted. Do not interpret a "favorite" as a thumbs up nor a thumbs down - the Sifter primarily wants to keep track of the conversation (which they would otherwise forget about unless they bookmark it in some other way).

Favorite means, essentially "bookmark", but it's given a nicer sounding term (which, not completely coincidentally, is identical to the term give for bookmarks in Internet Explorer).

Others have made this mistake in the past, and I'm half-assedly working on an FAQ to keep little bits of trivia and Sift etiquette straight to help newcomers avoid embarassing misunderstandings.

For the record, I favorite many Sift Talk posts, and it's invariably to follow the discussion - when some topics grow obsolete I try to prune my favorites list down to keep it manageable in size. My "personal favs" can be found, however, in this playlist: http://www.videosift.com/playlist/Krupo/All-time-greatest

Well Peter Bogdanovich would say that going from a darling of the Oscars to commercial failure in the span of the same decade.

Reln please take no offense to it! We appreciate your continued input and contributions! Thank you.
