Just linked this to my ex (american) and she said - nope you don't sound like that to me. But i suspect she's trying to act "in" with the brits! I noticed her do it in the past, too. Ever noticed that or is it just her?

I am such a computer illiterate. I push the buttons with crossed fingers and hope for the best.

You might want to know this, too. I had to sit through 30 seconds of advert for one minute of video, whereupon i had to watch another 30 seconds of advert. Definitely relevant!

So extremely well put. However, i fear it must be the generation that comes AFTER this one that will be the force for changing the law. Ok, we now (by majority) think pot is ok. But the generation after us (who we raise) will be even more comfortable with pot than we are, and the old people (us) will agree. I worry that only then will the taboo be broken.

Ok. It looks like we mostly agree on the subject, but just have different opinions on whether it would bother us. I ride a lot too. I guess I'm just too picky.

It might actually save money if you could get it to work on car tires. Under inflation can seriously shorten the life of your car tires.
another thought: think about how tired you get pumping a tire from 22 to 52 psi. With the self inflating tire you are still doing the same amount of work.. and while the tire stops filling after reaching the desired pressure, it looks like you keep on working the mechanism with every pedal stroke. That kind of wasted energy can really add up.
Of course, energy is wasted through movement of the tires all the time anyway - just feel them after a ride; they are hot. The trick must be in getting the energy wasted by the pump mechanism to overlap with that energy that would be wasted even with a normal tire.

The tire should resist being compressed by an amount which would largely depend on the work needed to raise the bike and its rider by fractions of a milimetre per turn of the pedal which would not be very much extra energy to put in. You're also spreading that "pumping up the tire" energy over thousands of pedal turns. I'm almost certain it'd be negligible.
It's similar to putting a dynamo on a bike to power a light - that light requires energy to run, and it has to come from somewhere (the dynamo resists the motion of the wheel turning) - meaning you have to pedal ever so slightly harder. You wouldn't notice.

Well, you sort of hit on my point. At first it seems like it would be very little energy, but you are doing the same (or similar) amount of work as you would do when inflating the tire directly (the same job is getting done). I know that others have claimed that they don't get tired when blowing up a tire (no pun intended), but for me it is enough of a job that I wouldn't want to be doing it the entire duration of every bike ride that I ever take.
Similarly, most commuters and people riding bikes for sport don't want to deal with the extra energy (and mass) it takes to drive a dynamo powered headlamp, so they choose a battery powered model instead.


Well i mean obviously cyclists cycling for sport won't use any lights to avoid weight, and they have to accurately control such things.

We're talking about the kind of difference between going up some stairs and going up some stairs with a jacket on and after a big meal. It's completely unnoticeable to your strong leg muscles to carry that meal and the jacket up the stairs, but if you stood at the bottom and tried to throw them both up you'd probably find that a bit tiring. Know what i mean? I get your point but i just don't think you'd notice. I cycle a lot and the tiniest things can make it feel easy or tiring, would you notice a miniscule change?

Fair enough though if the potentially large eventual added up calories puts you off.

I'm taking it out of retirement for you...feel honored.

I'll watch movies that are sad stories about kids, but I won't normally watch them twice. Video games are a different type of entertainment for me where I need to put in physical and mental effort into the story to make it progress. By adding that extra involvement I become much more emotionally entwined with a game than I ever would in a book or movie.

I'm not saying that I don't like conflict or stories with trails and tribulations in general, it is more that some subjects when presented a certain way make me uncomfortable so I'll choose other forms of entertainment instead. It's akin to people not liking horror flicks because they don't like to be scared.

Grave of the fireflies is a good example of a movie that I think is really good, but I don't have any inclination to see again. While being very well done and putting a very realistic light on war, it is very sad and I don't search out entertainment that makes me sad.

No worries on the attack bit, I don't mind explaining myself when I was just being sincere.

Do you not watch any films or read any books then? Or is it only digital fictional characters that you refuse to give emotional feeling to? It sounds as though you think you're being evilly manipulated. They've only done what fictional storytelling has done since forever.

"Abuse" of fictional characters is what leads to tragedy in a story, it gives a story a purpose and there's tragedy in (i'll be bold and say it) every decent story. Harry Potter's parents were murdered, he wants revenge. JK Rowling did not manipulate you to feel care for Harry so that you'd buy the book. Without his parents being murdered, there was no reason to be interested about his particular story of revenge and growth.

Would you really like to.. i dunno, read about some hobbits that find a magical ring which turns them invisible, so they win at hide and seek and live happily ever after? That's just a toddler's book.

I agree exactly. The first 5 minutes inspired awe and many other feelings, the religion part just fell flat and then the end revived the magic a bit.

The first 5 minutes were absolutely beautiful. Those 5 minutes express in words things that i never could, sat there staring up at the sky or looking through a telescope. It expresses completely my marvel when looking out at the universe and understanding the things i understand about it and then looking back down at myself and everyone on earth with me.

The rest of it i could take or leave. No need to argue for/against religion after that point. Just say those first 5 minutes, and the conclusions are your own.

He can call you whatever he likes, even though it's not nice - and vice versa of course. There are some "rules" about personal attacks, but the attacks have to be pretty outrageous. I mean, look at what people tend to call QM every once in a while, and it's tolerated.
Throbbin's a nice guy, I guess he's just got an exposed nerve about this since he has little daughters (would be my guess).
