Grackles Invade Supermarket Parking Lot In Houston

luxintenebris says...

wal-mart? sign says 'h-mart'? what gives?

have seen a smaller version of this numerous times. a small flock of birds (same species) combing the lot for scraps. if one could plan on this, it'd be a g̶o̶l̶d̶e̶n̶ black opportunity for vengeance. buy a sack of sunflower seeds and pour it on top of the victim/victims' car.

just bury their car in a heap of hungry birds.

"I really don't care, do you?"- Trump

Trump had a plan? You mean the plan to demonize all non white foreigners as lowlife criminals coming from shitholes because it appeals to his racist base, or his plan to funnel federal money to his donors to "build" (in quotes because many of the no bid contracts went to donors who weren't builders and their poorly built sections fell apart in under a year) his useless wall by playing on his bases fear of non white foreigners?
Trump never had a plan that didn't end with him walking away with the money.

If Meat Eaters Acted Like Vegans

enoch says...

@ahimsa

and now we move to stage two of the predictable vegan argument:

distinctions.

oh fuck me with a razor bladed dildo this is some tiring and facile shit.

look man,you are seriously missing my main point:
pretentious twattery and a morally and philosophically inconsistent stance.

so you can keep quoting anybody and everybody because it is apparent you really do not understand what you are quoting, and it is not adding anything to our discussion...at all.

maybe..
possibly..
just something to consider...
you approach expressing the values and benefits of being a vegan sans the self-righteousness,the pretension and condescension?

that maybe because YOU became a vegan for moral and ethical reasons, others may have come to it from other means and for other reasons, and allow those who are NOT vegan to come to their own conclusions and make their own choices?

and maybe not be so judgey mcjudgerface if they choose differently than you?

look man,we all do something that gives us the "feel goods".

some recycle obsessively, even though there is little evidence that actually makes a difference.

others drive a hybrid and feel that is their contribution, even though it is actually worse.

some will only buy organic and/or shop locally.(thats me btw)
and even though this brings some coin to the local farmers, taken on a whole it is barely a blip against the monster that is wal mart.

i have friends who do beach clean up every year, even though it gets destroyed within a month.

so we all try to do something that fits our perceptions of the world and how we can make it a better place.

and yes..if we ALL got together we could make a massive change in the current dynamics, not only locally but globally.

so i get it mate..i really do.

i guess what i am suggesting at it's core is this:
stop acting like a newly converted jehovahs witness who just wants us all to hear about your new buddy jesus.

i also think i should share that my long time girlfriend is vegan.
not your judgey,self righteous,pretenscious type vegan..but a vegan.

and that girl can't cook worth a damn.
which means that cooking falls on ME.
do i still eat meat?
yep,but not that often and rarely..raaarely red meat.
and to my girls credit she never gives me shit,i may get the upturned nose but never actual verbal shit.

red curry anyone?

Confessions of a Republican in a 1960's ad

Drachen_Jager says...

Sure she says she's changed, but she was on the board of directors for Wal-Mart. She took many six-figure speaking opportunities for Wall Street, she promoted the disastrous "jail every black man" legislation Bill enacted.

The problem with Washington is that Republicans and Democrats essentially saw eye-to-eye for many years as they both shifted to self-serving "neo-liberal" parties and she's right in the middle of that. That's a big part of the reason politics is blowing up in America right now, there hasn't been a REAL choice in decades. The only difference has been on social issues and even then it's a pretty narrow range of social issues.

As much as she pretends to have outgrown it, she's still the good little Republican girl her parents loved. It's just the politics around her that have shifted to the right.

Uber driver maces drunk idiot in self defense

Lawdeedaw says...

Uber is a conservative idea, not a libertarian idea. Big difference, even though it is nuanced. For example, under corporate protections, loopholes, hedge fund / stock market finagling and so forth, Wal-mart has grown (more) than it could have ever imagined.

Still, the free market by itself doesn't work. However, just noting the hybrid system we have is almost worse in a way.

Drachen_Jager said:

Can we admit it now?

Uber, and pretty much everything like it that seeks to lower prices for a commodity/service simply for the sake of lowering prices to drive customers is wrong. Wal-Mart, whatever. People are cows and will always move to the cheapest available product, government needs to intervene to ensure safe working conditions and fair wages for all. Cases like Uber are just proof of how flawed Libertarian ideas really are.

Woman At Walmart Falls Through Plastic Display Pool

bremnet says...

Howdy - sorry for the delay, was traveling on business. The issue you are referring to below with regards to reusable water bottles is I believe related to the type of liner (thin coating of polymer based material that is coated on the inside of some but not all of these bottles). In most cases when polymers come in contact with food (incl. water) the concerns are usually not in the polymer itself, but in some of the additives (processing aids, plasticizers, anti-oxidants, UV stabilizers, pigments etc) that in some cases have negative impacts on some human metabolic processes. I would emphasize 'some'. The recent outrage over BPA is not supported unequivocally by scientific evidence, but there is enough uncertainty to move away from it as a plasticizer in PET bottles. If one was to use a food grade polyethylene or polypropylene water bottle, requiring no liner, and totally suitable as a water bottle, then there is no concern at all with the long term use of this material in water bottles. Next time you go through the grocery store, have a look at all the packaging - films on processed meets, stretch wrap on fresh meat cuts, all of your cold dairy products - the vast majority of these are made from one of either polyethylene or polypropylene, with a smattering of polystyrene and polyvinylidene chloride thrown in. All perfectly safe.

As for how the balls are made - these are blow molded. If you have a look at the plastic baseballs made for kids that come with a big fat plastic bat (or really any hard plastic ball that you might find at Wal Mart or Toys'R'Us, you'll see the small ridge that runs equatorially around the circumference of the ball (that's the parting line where the two mold halves come together) and somewhere on that line there will be either a little tiny hole or a small protruding knob that used to be the parison where the air was injected into the small plastic glob forcing it to the walls of the mold like an expanding balloon. This is the same type of molding that makes your liquid dishwashing detergent bottle, plastic ketchup and mustard containers, and plastic milk jugs. Hope this helps a bit. cheers

Fairbs said:

I admit this is something I know little about so I have a couple of questions if you don't mind... There seems to be a concern about what reusable water bottles are made of. So you're supposed to use a certain type or the plastic (and this may be the wrong term) leeches into your water and then I don't know exactly what, but you probably die some horrible death maybe like in the toxic avenger. So one question is... Is that true (or maybe a less exaggerated version)? The second one I think you may have answered is... Are these injection molded? I can't comprehend how these would be made. I think I need a How it's Made to wrap my mind around this. Thanks.

Why Tipping Should Be Banned

Fairbs says...

Amen on your wal-mart comment. Corporate welfare at its finest.

My parents are pretty bad tippers and I used to add a little to the pot on the sly because I felt bad for the waitstaff.

bareboards2 said:

I traveled with a woman from England once. She raved about the low prices in restaurants.

I explained that was because she was expected to tip and that the servers were paid very poorly.

She still refused to tip, and just enjoyed the low prices.

I made a point of going back to the servers after she left and tell them -- hey, she's from England and doesn't tip. That tip is from me.

Related topic -- Walmart needs to pay their workers so the folks who shop at Walmart pay the actual costs of the goods, instead of having the American taxpayers pay for it through food stamps. (I'm not opposed to food stamps AT ALL, I am opposed to people not paying for what they get.)

Anti-Michael Brown Song By Retired Fed. Investigator

Lawdeedaw says...

Don't confuse the Unions that attack the Mayor with actual people. The Unions are dicks that are a business just like Sharpton (Making them millions) and Wal-Mart. Of course they spout of shit like Donald Trump or Obama on any given day.

Down here many cops state that Brown was a thug who threw around a store clerk in a potentially deadly robbery. There is a reason criminals can be charged for murder if an officer dies on his way to a crime like that. Or if someone gets shot by a store clerk on accident. The inherent nature of violence that Brown brought to the store alone was potentially deadly.

This video is the same as the censored Kim Jung Un video, or half the Epic Rap Battles. I remember my wife crying when they mentioned Merlin Monroe having miscarriages because she had four. But never once did she bemoan the Battles.

And yes, it annoyed me that you made mention that this video was NOT racist but the above sifter not-to-be-named ignored that...shows how much he listens.

newtboy said:

Dude...can you read? Please try again. I did not say it was racist. I said things do not have to be racist to be disgusting. Just wow. Talk about low reading comprehension.

If you only believe the cop testimony, perhaps. Since the DA threw the grand jury case, we'll never know, because it will never see a court room. That's not the series of events reports say the other 38 witnesses testified to seeing.

Songs laughing about killing unarmed people, and comparing them to road kill is only entertainment for disgusting people. Odd that all the cops found it entertaining...or perhaps it's not.
They should be upset because making fun of killing other people is disgusting, especially in the current climate where cops are trying to look human and humane, this shows their true colors when they think no one is watching, they laugh at killing unarmed people and take pleasure in it while dehumanizing the dead victims and their families. That's why any thinking person with a conscience would be upset. Duh.

I brought up the NY mayor because you brought up the NYPD cops. The way the cops are treating the mayor, who is not anti cop, but is simply not 100% behind every cop action, is infantile and disgusting. It shows how they can't accept any criticism without completely over-reacting in the worst ways, like big babies with guns. EDIT: NYPD also illustrates how the cops react if someone says something about police that shoot and beat to death unarmed men of color far more often than 'whites'. Imagine how they would react if this WERE a song making fun of the two slain officers.

Oh Bob. You might want to back off on the attempted insults and stick to the topic. (It just so happens that I'm fixed, not neutered, learn the difference, Neutered males do not 'grow a pair' back, fixed males still have their testicles.) Your attempt at insult failed miserably on all fronts, but I'll still give you 'credit' for trying to be smarmy and clever.
It seems you're going the way of Chingalera here...and we all know what happened when he put the Newt in his mouthy parts. (it's the same thing that happens to anything that tries to bite a Newt, we just come crawling back out of your dead mouth unharmed!) He thought he was a big man too, with his smarmy insulting nastiness...didn't work out too well for him.

Considering how you see 'reality', I sure hope I look to be on the wrong side to you. I would hate to think I'm somehow in step with you or @Trancecoach. Many thinking people here do not have the highest opinions of your ilk.

EDIT: If Bill Burr told this story, he would not have talked about Michael Brown in those disgusting, degrading, dehumanizing ways. Bill is not an asshole. He might have found a way to make it funny, but not degrading or dehumanizing. This guy is no Bill Burr.

Daily Show: Australian Gun Control = Zero Mass Shootings

scheherazade says...

I think you missed the part about focusing on victims, punishing the guilty, and leaving everyone else alone.

I think you'll find that most people that kill others, are already doing something legally prohibited.
Focus on fixing/dealing-wtih those offending individuals.

I know people just want to "do something"... But leave me, my community, everyone else out of it, please. We didn't do it. Thanks.

side note :
Deadliest school killing in the U.S. was done without a gun. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster

The alternative to a gun is not merely 'a stick'.
You should read about the lethality of hydrogen sulfide. (Mixing 2 common household cleaners that you probably have right now)
1 breath can hospitalize. The gas commonly kills whoever is exposed, whoever finds them, and 1st responders, and it raises no alarm.
I would /not/ say that's /less/ harm than a gun.
Now think for a second about how much more damage one of those school shooters could have done with a simple super soaker from wal-mart.

Btw, you're already prohibited from owning a gun if you have mental health issues.
Check out ATF form 4473, and the electronic background check (granted some states don't have good records in the check).

Gun control still has 2 flaws.
1) It doesn't get gangsters/criminals to turn in their guns (essentially the entire 'problem population')
2) It puts non-violent people who have prohibited arms in jail - having done no harm.

With 1/3 of a billion people, something extremely rare will seem common if it's constantly reported.
You would live many many many lifetimes before you ever meet someone who knows someone who was shot.
We live in the least violent era of human history.
I feel very safe.

Since you mention an AR15, here's a stat :
In the U.S., more people die each year falling out of bed (~450), than are killed by all rifles combined (including an ar15 with massive 'clip'). The danger isn't as large as people imagine.

@harlequinn, you do realise that NZ actually has quite sensible gun laws? You can own semi-auto rifles and so on but to do so you need a firearms licence. This includes not only a police check, but the cops will actually come to your house and check that you have adequate storage provisions for your guns. On top of that

Anti-Gun PSA Makes the Case for Women With Guns

Shepppard says...

No... This definitely continues the point of "We don't need weapons that are easily concealed and readily available for this exact situation to be available at your local Wal Mart."

In terms of Canadian gun laws, could this still happen? Yes. But only after he's taken not one, but two tests, and a psych exam. Other than that, if he were walking around outside with a gun, it would've been something like a hunting rifle, where she could A) have hid, or B) said "He's carrying a gun!"

Lets go back to the whole "What about if he didn't have a handgun" bit, though. Because, honestly, if he didn't have a handgun, the cops would literally have been there within 2 minutes most likely.

You also make the assumption that even if she had a gun, she wouldn't have gotten shot. That would be true if she had been brandishing it when the guy broke in, but unless it was already in her hands, he already would've had her within the first 10 seconds of being in the house.

Bernie Sanders tears into Walmart for corporate welfare

shatterdrose says...

*sigh* No, what would happen is exactly what Wal-Mart does . . . They'd threaten to move. They'll strong arm governments, which is what they ALREADY do, warning they'll destroy them if they don't play ball.

For instance, Wally World has 5 stores in 5 small towns. Town A complains they're having to compensate the workers too much, so Wally World just leaves. Wally World has already undercut and destroyed the local economy with their "low prices" and "capitalism" (they are not far from that) so by leaving, they take away the rest of the town.

Now, the other 4 towns get word that Wal-Mart is going to build a Super Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart will pick one town to build in, and close their stores in the other 3. So now they face death, or playing by Wal-Marts rules.

And on top of that, all these workers have no where else to get jobs because Wal-Mart killed off their competition through unfair pricing schemes (by lowering prices below cost and taking a loss knowing their other stores will compensate). So now these workers have no where else to make money . . . except stealing, dealing drugs or turning to prostitution. But you're absolutely right, they should have sought these other choices.

Or maybe they should have gone to school at one of those privatized places . . . or gotten a eduction by the standards that most Republicans think is scientifically creationist "has a whole way of shutting that down" and let's eliminate all Atheists from our history books schools.

So I agree, you're absolutely right there. 100%…..

bobknight33 said:

The point of view that Sanders is taking is that corporations are paying so little that the workers have no choice but to take welfare.

I say that if there was no welfare ( well not as much as there is today) then corporations like Walmart would have to pay more. Otherwise people would not even apply.

For every dollar the government hands out in welfare, the corporations have to give a dollar more to make working for them worthwhile.

Minimum wage is not to be a living wage but an entry level wage where one can better oneself and then one would have standing to ask for a higher wage.

As far as big ass tax breaks for the big corporations I say F to that.

I agree that corps have corrupted government to favor them. Capitalism without morality is we are today.

Capitalism is the best system. We all practice capitalism every day with our purchasing dollars. We look for the best value for the good and services we desire.
