How to Conduct Traffic Like A Boss

rancor says...

This problem is supposed to sort out itself. If the light's out you don't blow through, you treat it like an all-way stop sign

Oh right, all those Russian driving videos.

Wind vs traffic light in Poland

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Infrastructure (HBO)

spawnflagger says...

loved the cameos.
My pessimistic side says that no funding will materialize, and only the "it's going to break next week" bridges and dams will get a band-aid emergency repair, over and over, until they eventually collapse or close.

I've seen a road that got a giant sinkhole, and rather than fix it, they put up a few concrete barriers and 2 stop signs, basically making it 1 lane at the part where the sinkhole is.

I've seen bridges that were closed for years because they were deemed unsafe.

Another problem is that road materials exist that will last 8 x longer than asphalt, but they cost 2 x more. These were proposed, but guess what? The highway works union lobbied against them because it would mean fewer jobs for them.

Officer Friendly is NOT your friend

Mordhaus says...

You just have to remember Lantern that there are two unwritten rules when it comes to Videosift commentary.

1. Never, in any way, show support for the police.
2. Never show support or defend religion.

If you do either of those things, you will be shat upon as if it was a downpour and you neglected to bring an umbrella. I admit, I will be one of the first to rip into someone over either if they don't have a logical argument; such as people defending Islam. But I am also aware that there are good cops and good religious people out there, they are just rarely videotaped because it lacks sensationalism.

Now I don't have all the information on this video, but I have been stopped in a similar situation many years ago for driving late at night in an expensive sports car. Why, you ask, incredulously? The cop was nice enough in my case to explain that the area I was leaving, having just come from a friend's house where we were playing xbox, was a known manufacturing area for meth. He asked why I was out so late, I told him. He asked if I had any drugs or dead bodies in the car in a joking fashion, I told him that he could clearly see everything in the car but the spare tire so I didn't. He told me the above thing about why he stopped me and let me go. Well, he also gave me a warning for not using a turn signal at a stop sign, but who really uses their turn signals all the time at 3am in the morning?

Why I Don't Like the Police

lantern53 says...

Cops DO NOT always assume someone is armed and dangerous. That's why they get killed so often. Someone comes in to file a report, you don't assume they are armed and dangerous. Little old ladies...not armed and dangerous. Children...not armed and dangerous. Wives of bikers...not armed and dangerous. Shoplifters....not armed and dangerous.

Guy runs a stop sign...you don't assume he is armed and dangerous. But you have to be aware that the possibility exists. Too many cops have paid the ultimate price for not watching the hands.

Of course, sometimes you are wrong. You can find a video of a shoplifter being detained in Russia...he pulls out a gun and shoots 4 people.

As for pepper-spraying people...I carried pepper spray for 30 yrs, never used it.

If a cop is using it on 'non-violent' protesters sitting in the street, it's because his supervisor said 'clear the street, cars have to move through here'. See...because you've already told 20 people to move out of the street and guess what...they didn't do it.

As for being treated violently by other cops, the reason cop's families don't get treated violently is because they generally don't make meth in their kitchen, they don't engage in violent domestic arguments, etc.

Cyclist Vs Cars

Yogi says...

I think you're all full of shit. In Seattle cyclists are everywhere, they don't pay attention to stop signs or stop lights and it seems to work just fine.

I think the best idea is still banning cars from city centers and only using trolleys or bicycles.

If I'm being honest here, I don't care what you guys think, this comment section is for me not you.

Cyclist Vs Cars

newtboy says...

They have to follow laws because we all do. They make the road work.
Cyclists don't see everything, and allowing them to run lights and stop signs would cause far more accidents, because they would often not see the already moving traffic and get hit or cause the other drivers to have an accident.
I used to ride over 30 miles a day, and following the rules of the road helped me avoid many an accident.
These drivers were a good example of why one should wear spiked riding gloves...both to protect your hands when you're hit and to punch through windows to get the attention of stupid inattentive drivers.

Yogi said:

I don't see why cyclists have to follow the traffic laws at all. They're more in danger and at risk than someone with a cage around them. They can also see better and travel slower and brake faster. So let them go past red lights or stop signs if no ones there.

Call them pedestrians because they're more at risk than people in cars. Oh and get out of your fucking car and ride a bike in the city.

Skateboarding with dogs

poolcleaner says...

I do this with my dogs as well, but not this EPIC! As for the stop signs, when you skate for many, many years it's easy to stop, go, dodge, evade, etc. It's mostly cringe worthy for others who don't understand the tempo and law of the board.

How the Media Failed Women in 2013

JiggaJonson says...

@Trancecoach I'd like to see a female equivalent (or worse) of the Rob Thicke video where he's fully clothed dancing around actually naked women doing things like:

Blowing smoke in their faces
Making them feign humping dogs
Holding little stop signs in their ass (because they want him to stop but he knows they want it)
Spelling out "Rob Thicke has a big dick" (clit? for the female version that doesn't exist as far as I know)

Not to mention the whole song is basically mirrors date rape and forcing yourself on women. http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2013/09/17/from-the-mouths-of-rapists-the-lyrics-of-robin-thickes-blurred-lines-and-real-life-rape/

Yeah... good luck finding something MORE poorly portrayed, as you put it, where men are featured.

OTHER PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES. SLOW DOWN!

bcglorf says...

I disagree. It SHOULD be a PSA for defensive driving, but instead it's a scare tactic to try and convince people that driving 7km/h over the speed limit is killing the children of hard working folks.

This PSA puts the emphasis on the speeding as though it's the problem. The real defensive driving lessons people need to prevent such an accident have nothing to do with speed. Obviously the guy driving out in front of the oncoming car should never do that, and that's not a small mistake, that's a kill myself and everyone in the car with me mistake. Lastly, the more important point that lots of drivers could stand to learn is regardless of if you are speeding or not, watch the road ahead for cars that might cut you off, and if it looks like they are start slowing down. If I spot a guy coming in too fast on a stop sign ahead, or rolling up to it, I slow down even though I have right of way, just in case. 9 times out of 10, it turns out it didn't matter, but it has spared me an accident on more than 1 occasion where even a little below the speed limit, there was just no way I was gonna slow down.

And the 7km over IS a ridiculous line for the PSA to draw. Just compare the difference that extra speed makes to your stopping distance and time to the difference in judgment required of the guy pulling out. The guy pulling out is gonna misjudge the oncoming traffic arrival time and distance by more than a second or meter or two.

Jesus, guys, it's just a PSA for defensive driving. Drive more defensively and move on with your life. (And, by the by, continue living.)

World War Two Movie Making Gone Wrong

shatterdrose says...

Then again, they also said those few black kids going to all white schools were idiots too . . . Or those few Indians who stood against British rule . . . Or perhaps those few women who protested and marched until they had the right to vote?

See, the problem with that statement is that many cyclists are actually out there to change the world for what they perceive is a better way of life. Not to mention, they have tons of research on the subject to back up their claims (unlike the situations I cited, which btw, I am well aware are on a totally different level of human abuse).

The issue is of course is you have some die hard cyclists who aren't there to make a statement, but because they're counter-culture. They're hipsters. They're going to run stop signs because "fuck authority" etc. Then again, I've been hit 6 times in my car. Care to guess how many of those were because someone didn't obey a traffic law? That's why we have those rules to begin, to prevent "accidents" from occurring.

As a cyclist-commuter, and as someone who drives thousands of miles as work requires, I say if a cyclist blows through a stop sign and you hit them, their own damned fault.

Many of us, including myself, have petitioned to create a Yield on Stop Under 30 rule. In essence, we have way to many stop signs in this country. This goes for cars as well. And you know you've done it at some point: you come to a stop sign in some part of a housing project and you "California Roll" through it. Or a "Brooklyn Stop." Whatever you want to call it.

But I do know some cyclists who blatantly disobey rules as a fuck you. But as a cyclist who stops at red lights, who stops at stops signs, who checks behind me to see if I can make it easier for a car to pass me, the whole "fuck cyclists" thing tells me exactly what I see on the streets everyday: we don't need cars. Cars create assholes. Cars insulate you from the world around you and the people around you become anonymous boxes of steel that you don't care about. It's a me me me me society.

To that matter, the cycling community here in Orlando is pretty big given our population and disgusting sprawl patterns. The majority of us you'll never notice because we're doing things right. Some of us, you will notice because we are doing things right. When we make a left turn, we get in your way. So would any other vehicle. Are we going too slow? Suck it up. I can't tell you how many times some asshole comes within inches of me trying to speed past me . . . on a 25 MPH road while I'm doing a good 18. We almost always end up at the same stop sign or red light.

So yeah, as you said, the extreme ones are stupid. It goes both ways, as you said. But FYI, the world would be a better place if everyone rode a bike. Just saying.

chingalera said:

I have mixed feelings regarding cycling enthusiasts. The ones who see the world as a polluted shit-hole because of cars, who dress in biking-gear and ride to work everyday and don't own a car, the SAME people who obsessively recycle their garbage and preach about it to others (as if the world would be a better place if everyone "recycled").

It's THESE insects, OCD, tweakers that I can't stand, self-absorbed, self-righteous gimps on two skinny wheels.

Add to that description the DICKHEADS that preach cycling-over-automobiles who intentionally stick their ass in the center of the road while conducting traffic and talking smack to drivers sharing the road with Professor Suicide??

THOSE motherfuckers, can moisturize my ballsack.

I had an old roommate who died in San Francisco during a Critical Mass ride, the poor fucker got creamed by a truck driver who was ALSO a dickhead, of the opposite persuasion.

I certainly believe that anyone who chooses a bicycle as their only means of transportation who do so in a large cities where the majority of people commute to work from rural areas in cars everyday, have a fucking death wish.
San Fran, NYC, Chicago, Philly?? No problem. Any city where cyclists are not very prevalent on the roadways, yer an idiot plain and simple.

Sydney Tunnels Have Giant Water Holograms

MilkmanDan says...

Pop-up spike strips would be good, but I'd put them *after* the water stop sign projection (which would be moved out a bit). They already had to stop traffic for 20+ minutes to clear road so the dude could back up and get his truck out. Backing up a semi is hard, particularly if you've got double trailers (triples are near impossible unless you've got savant-like reversing talent).

If they popped his tires, add hours onto that to replace probably 10+ tires if he gets the whole semi tractor over the spike strip. However, even that is still better than letting the dumbass drive into the tunnel at full steam and causing massive damage.

chingalera said:

Pretty much you'd imagine, but what strikes me is what should strike that truck's tires after the 1 or 2 warnings-Pop-up tire-poppers about render-dead-stopped distance from the tunnel's next repair shut-down.
Pop the sleepy trucker's go-circles (or hoist his shit up hydraulically w/piton) before the rainy, non-deterrent.
The rain-stop sign only works if he hits his brakes, right?
