Why Lotus Silk Is So Expensive

diego says...

Didnt know this stuff existed, but in any case my conclusion from this video is that capitalism and globalization are disgusting. 3rd world countries people slaving away for 200$ every 2 months, giving their knowledge away, and the narrator is saying its soooo expensive and worth the hard effort for them while he probably earns more money than all her workers combined to do fluff journalism, smh

Lands That Will FLOOD in Our Lifetime

greatgooglymoogly says...

Genius narrator thinks a dam will hold back the ocean from SF Bay. Completely forgetting the river will fill it up to the same level behind the dam anyway. You are not going to pump all that river flow UP into the ocean. All it could help with is protection against storm surge.

The pictures this video shows does not represent a "38 cm rise by 2100" mentioned in the beginning. It would have been nice to show the actual level of rise depicted in the images and projected year that would occur.

Capitalism, the enemy of Freedom and Democracy

Mordhaus says...

Disagree. There is a difference between unchecked capitalism and capitalism that is controlled by law.

Even the narrator states that we are in a hyper-capitalism situation. That is runaway capitalism. Properly contained capitalism does not suppress freedom and democracy.

NASA Explains Moon Return Plans in Stunning Animated Short

BSR says...

The sound editor is probably having problems at home with the wife over which color the new car should be and this is his only outlet. He just wants to be heard.

The narrator is a problem for me also.

Personally, when she says any word that has an "s" in it, it's like sticking toothpicks in my eardrums. To be clear, this is not just a woman annoyance because men do it also. But... when it comes to a disagreement about the color of the new car...

Max Headroom: The most misunderstood joke on TV

newtboy says...

I loved Max Headroom. Remember the sci-fi TV series? I member.

Blipverts are exactly like skipping commercials at 3X speed imo. Surprisingly not many obese viewers have spontaneously exploded.

I liked this, but ran out of interest around 20 minutes in. I really didn't need a >7 minute explanation of what late night talk shows are. Even with Max narrating this should have been maybe 10 minutes long, not near 40.

NASA Maven Mars Orbiter explained VS. Spiderverse animation

newtboy says...

Interesting.
Why can't we use hydrogen balloons to put instruments at the right levels above earth, I wonder?
Do they think the static fluctuations, including the rifts, can be attributed to the almost total lack of atmosphere, or the lack of magnetic field on MARS, or something else?
Maybe I should read the NASA release.....nope, no answers there, only a near verbatim transcript of the narration.

Why Snatch Blocks are AWESOME (How Pulleys Work)

Why Hayao Miyazaki's Animation Feels Alive

viewer_999 says...

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone call out the non-stop orchestral garbage plastered wall-to-wall over so many popular films (e.g., disney and yes, star wars... which is now, well, you know...). Thanks to this narrator! I hate that nonsense.

Multi-Agent Hide and Seek

bremnet says...

Another entrant in the incredibly long line of adaptation / adaptive learning / intelligent systems / artificial intelligence demonstrations that aren't. The agents act based on a set of rules / freedoms/constraints prescribed by a human. The agents "learn" based on the objective functions defined by the human. With enough iterations (how many times did the narrator say "millions" in the video) . Sure, it is a good demonstration of how adaptive learning works, but the hype-fog is getting a big thick and sickening folks. This is a very complex optimization problem being solved with impressive and current technologies, but it is certainly not behavioural intelligence.

FPV drone pilot is invited to film a power plant demolition

cloudballoon says...

I concur. This is more a fail than a success. The commission, I assume, is not to have something "cool" to see -- like watching aerial parkour -- but to have footage at each stages of detonations for the engineers to analyze if every calculations/explosive hookups went off as planned.

With that as parameters, there's almost nothing to see here. If the drone is equipped with a wide-angle lens and/or multi-cam setup (filming both the building and the smokestack at the same time) than maybe the video would be useful. What I see here is crap, narrated by clowns.

@mxxcon: The drone controllers are the assholes IMO. Shouldn't be paid, or paid 10-20% of the commission, max!

@TRRazor That was exactly my reaction...

THIS is the footage you got??? The edge of the screen showing something happening off screen, lots of empty idle ground mid-frame, and the very tail-end of the tower hitting the ground?

SUCCESS! not so much

Mexico's Magical Fireflies

newtboy says...

Lol. The narrator sounds quite ominous...dark and foreboding. Judging by his tone, I expected him to finish by saying "in that one magical hour, the fireflies of Mexico eat people."
*promote a *quality natural event. Nature's fireworks.
