Cost of living 2001 vs today

newtboy says...

Really @ant?
You really believe the idiotic claim here that food prices have more than doubled in the two years since 2021? 🤦‍♂️
Disappointing. I thought better of you.

Edit- sorry, I misread/misheard….I thought he said 2021, not 2001. I was further confused by the $10 trillion claim at the end, which if we are starting at 2001 should be $30 trillion.
It’s still a blatant exaggeration, in that 22 year period food prices have gone up 75% +-, not over 140%.

Cost of living 2001 vs today

newtboy says...

Totally *debunked *lies and bullshit. I saw this on YT and laughed at the stupidity.

1. That was not $81 worth of groceries in 2021. It was a minimum of $175 at full price. I buy groceries in California and I pay attention to prices.
Soda prices have actually gone down in California significantly since since the pandemic ended, so has milk and bacon.
More ridiculous MAGA lies.
He had to cherry pick non sale high price brands to make it that expensive…where’s the video of him buying the same brands not on sale two years ago at 1/2 the price?
Have prices gone up? yes….by 10-15% since 21, not 100%+. 🤦‍♂️

2. Who is the “they” who “printed $10 trillion” @bobknight33? It’s not the Biden administration. I know where at least $8 trillion went…and wouldn’t be a bit surprised to find another $2 trillion spent off the books by the former administration. In fact, if I recall the Trump billionaire tax cuts were expected to cost about $1 trillion per year indefinitely, while the tax vacation for wage earners ended with most paying far more today than pre-Trump….so you can blame almost $3 trillion of Biden’s debt on Trump policy. 😂

Edit- OK, I misheard, I thought he said $89, not $81, and 2021, not 2001…since 2001 prices have gone up almost 75%…still not well over 100%, no where near 140%.
I was thrown by the $10 trillion figure given at the end, because since 2001 the fed has “printed” $30 trillion, not $10 trillion. $10 trillion is what MAGA nuts claim Biden has added.

Misheard Lyrics

You don't know 'You'

newtboy says...

There’s also that bit where “it’s on you” in no way means “it’s on YOUR show”. Should have been a hint to anyone who speaks non-pigeon-English. I thought he thought she just misheard, so he repeated.

But expecting Fox talking heads to understand plain English gives them too much credit. Edit: actually, expecting them to stop talking long enough to hear the answers to their questions is expecting too much. I think if she had listened, she would have understood.

I wish I could convince myself it was a bit, but I feel Laura isn’t that good of an actor, and her demeanor indicates she was being serious. I don’t want to think professional people are that clueless, but experience has made me believe they really are….but I freely admit it’s just my biased opinion…you of course are welcome to your own less jaded opinion, and I’ll just hope I’m wrong.

After he said the show was on "you" three or four separate times, which makes all the difference. I'd buy it if he would have led with that, and why wouldn't you if you can see the confusion? I'm sticking with it being a bit.

Trump’s Loyalties

luxintenebris says...

bill clinton use to joke about gingrich's "contract w/american".

he'd say, [parphrasing] when i heard the details, i'd thought i misheard. should have been "contract ON american"!

looks like bill heard right the first time.

It makes me wonder why Republicans don’t support Mexico declaring Texas, (historically part of Mexico and full of oppressed Mexicans,) independent, send in “peacekeeping” troops, and call it reunification….then they could start eyeing New Mexico and beyond. Seems it would be genius in their minds, totally proper and praiseworthy.

Maybe they think it’s Ukraine’s fault for not building a wall?

Finally a Doctor on the News Talking Fucking Sense

lucky760 says...

Yeah, I did a double-take and for a moment expected as if it were just an in-person conversation for the doctor to say "Actually, in that case the wife was more affected," then figured he didn't because he might feel kind of weird stopping to correct the reporter on live TV.

In general, it is men who are more affected, so the reporter was making a valid point. I think he just misheard or misunderstood the doctor's example when the doctor said "worse shape" meaning physically, in general.

(Or it could be that he thought the doctor misspoke and referenced the husband and wife in reverse.)

Digitalfiend said:

At 2:13 the doctor states that the wife ended up on a ventilator but the husband, "who was in much worse shape than the wife", ended up fine. Given the context of the conversation at that point, where the doctor was saying they can't predict who the virus will seriously affect, I took his statement as: the husband was in much worse *physical* shape than the wife yet he wasn't affected by the virus as severely (if at all). Fast-forward to @2:40 and the reporter states the complete opposite, as though he wasn't even listening to the doctor, and goes on to ask why men are more affected than women. Weird...

I love when what I misheard sounds better than what was actually said.

McCain defending Obama 2008

That seems right. I don't know if I misheard or they misspoke. He and Biden were good friends before that election, it seems.

Sorry, I actually meant to say "I didn't USUALLY agree with you"

@newtboy, I thought it was Joe Lieberman he was going to name.

Better Call Saul: The Origins of Squat Cobbler

BicycleRepairMan says...

Interesting, theres a pretty long story about this on an episode of Penns Sunday School, Penn seems pretty confident that he is the source of this idea. Basically the story goes like this: Penn and some other guy was having people in for an audition, and the other guy told Penn that maybe the scene would would better if the actress could "sit on up high" which penn misheard as "sit on a pie", Penn, not having slept for several weeks, thought this was so funny that in good Penn-style, he decided to hire nude models and order a bunch of pies and essential made pie-sitting-porn which he then sendt out to a bunch of show-business people on his mailing list, creating mass confusion, as he was the only one that was actually in on the joke.
