Beauty of Mathematics

BicycleRepairMan says...

Hmm cool, but the fingerprint/DNA collage doesnt really make sense, the "script" window seems to show the 60-something codons that matches the 20 different amino acids that makes up the proteins , and the middle part shows a PCR result in gel electrophoresis, a system of displaying DNA markers, (Admittedly sometimes referred to as DNA fingerprinting, but it doesnt actually have much to do with actual fingerprints..) In short, while these three things are linked in that they all have to do with living cells and identifications, there isnt actually any direct links, and, importantly no direct link to math..

Sure, math is used in genetics, protein folding and I guess fingerprint-recognition, but that particular slide made a mess of it.

Artist Can Draw Photo Quality Pictures

poolcleaner says...

This is the logical conclusion to years of blind contour focus and application of product illustration concepts. Great stuff!

I know a couple artists that do exactly this, but I've never observed the method using markers from start to finish.

freeD Yankee Stadium

Sniper007 says...

What? Render time? I'd guess minutes at most. C'mon, this is 2013, not 1993.

But you're right: Oculus Rift + This = Star Trek Holodeck in real life. Sports is possibly the best application for this combination, since the area of play is limited and well defined. Let me build upon your vision of the future.

It would require the ability to change your camera angle even when the "video" is playing. They'd also need to thoroughly map all audio sources on the playing feild. Heck, I'm sure there are tons of other massive technical hurdles that I haven't even thought of, but if you will, imagine this:

Go to an empty baseball field (or other large, flat area) during a time when you can be assured you'll be totally alone. You'd need to set up some kind of markers, four in total, non-coplaner. They would track your movement on the field in 3 dimensions. You might also set up a large circle fence around the outter edge of the field with sticks and string, to make sure you don't run into a tree or a building, since you'll be totally blind once you don your Oculus Rift. Then, put on the Rift, and play the video with your vantage point on the field as the camera angle. You'd be holding in your hand a remote control which can pause, rewind, or fast forward.

You could literally be IN THE GAME, AS IT PLAYS, with the ability to run along side your favorite football player as he runs into the end zone, seeing everything he sees, hearing everything he hears. Or stand in the endzone, and watch your favorite plays from every imaginable angle as though you were really there. Rewind the "video" and watch again from the vantage point of the quarterback, or the referee, or the coach.

There is no higher form of sports immersion. It is Nirvana.

The question is: how long did it take to render? Is it hours or even days on large render farm for each clip? That might limit the practicality, certainly for sports broadcasts at least.

On the other hand, I hope in 10 or 15 years, I can watch sports and put the camera wherever I want in real time or put on my VR headset and watch as though I were standing next to the pitcher or sitting on the wing of a race car. That probably will happen and that is an AWESOME prospect.

Sleeping Guitar Player - Prank

artician says...

What you said. Nice that he won't have to (try and fail to) wash off permanent marker in the morning, and it's a video he'll probably laugh at just as much as his friends.

That's a good clean (not to mention funny) prank I can really get behind.

Star Trek Puts Racism into Perspective

ambassdor says...

So I guess some higher up said, "We can't have him in one colour otherwise we'd seem racist to that colour... I know, let's just do half so we're safe! Also we're out of budget in wardrobe, and all that's left is a black permanent marker and some tippex"

Amazing 52 Point Comeback - AFL Lions vs. Cats

charliem says...

The centre gap = 6 points.
The two outside gaps = 1 point.
Hitting a post = 1 point.

Catching the ball without a bounce = a mark (you get to hold play and take your time to dispose of the ball without contest).

The 50m line is just a marker to show you how far out you are, it has no signifigance other than that.

inside monsanto-scientists talk about the truth

enoch says...

@bcglorf
thanks man.
that was a most excellent reply.

then we are in a fundamental disagreement on the practices of monsanto.
i was under the understanding that percy had been targeted by monsanto because of cross pollination coming from his neighbors farm.which then found its way into his crop.

monsanto claimed the genetic markers gave them property rights and that percy was liable.

maybe i misunderstood.

and most documentaries are trying to make a point and by its very nature will be biased.so i agree with your point there but i cannot agree that monsanto is somehow some benevolent multi-national corporation who has not enacted and used with extreme prejudice an army of lawyers to silence and intimidate those who would speak out against them.

they make scientology look like a bunch of bed wetters.

i guess my main problem, politics and corruption aside,is that we are talking about a basic necessity:food.

you cannot patent life.
if you change the fundamental nature of that life there should be open and transparent study and discussion.
in both of these cases the public is left in the dark and any questions or dissent is met with legal papers.

i mean.who besides a corporation would develop a "suicide gene"?

i am not saying this is a simple issue but the situation does deserve some serious scrutiny.

anyways.thanks for the great response my friend.

An Impressive Illusionist Makes His Debut on Ellen

Payback says...

That "say stop while I zip through the cards" trick is as old as the hills. Any decent slight of hand talent can give you the same card any time he wants. The magic marker red card and black card were put on back stage, then he just "blanks" it out with some flesh-coloured makeup and wipes it off in front of her.

brycewi19 said:

OK, that last illusion was actually quite impressive.

Female Supremacy

gorillaman says...

You asked how bad ideas can be oppressive and I think I told you. We can consider these things intellectually; thinking and reasoning does produce evidence.

I don't know if I have to remind you, I shouldn't have to, but I'm not the guy from the video. Our opinions are not the same.

There's really no such thing as women. It's not a useful category, vast and arbitrary as it is. The characteristics of women are those of all humanity; no traits emerge to distinguish those groups. Biological sex is a trivial marker, not substantially different from hair color or whether you can curl your tongue, and gender is a personal construct. There's nothing to be said about women that doesn't apply to everyone - so what does feminism have to say? Nothing.

The phenomenon of men as the oppressor of women, so far as it exists, is just a silly little anthropological quirk of our social evolution. It's not something to be taken seriously. There are a hundred worse ways in which unregulated instinctual behaviours are damaging our society every day.

Yogi said:

That's your argument, you say that it's oppressive to you as a rational person and then you present no evidence to that. Your argument isn't standing on anything whatsoever. You've basically pointed to "because this is how I feel about it." That's not convincing at all.

Haven't you ever had to make an argument where you've had to give evidence? I'm genuinely curious how "Feminism" as an idea can be oppressive. Especially when there is still a wage gap, and an underrepresentation of women in high offices.

I honestly don't understand this video or any of these arguments because you have not made your case at all.

Will Grumpy Cat Play With It? Friskies® Game Show for Cats

Do these kinna cats ever play with stuff? I never met anyone with a snowshoe-Siamese but it looks like one of those, "lay around and preen" breeds.

Cop Rear-Ends Motorcycle, Blames Rider

scheherazade says...

The law is plain on the matter.
Unless there is a minimum speed limit, you can stop at any time.
You can stop as quickly as you please.
Traffic behind you is REQUIRED to keep a distance large enough to stop safely, REGARDLESS of whatever happens in front.

Also, a motorcycle is not required to be in the center of the lane. He has domain to adjust left/right as needed or desired. Unless signaling or turning, you can't exceed the lane markers, but you can be anywhere between the lane markers.

Most people don't bother to keep a safe distance. Fine. Most people have zero regard for others and are so self important that they even take personal offense when you call them out on their own transgressions.

Just because ~everyone is reckless and follows too closely, doesn't mean that they are all excused.

A car is serious business.
People should think of it more like an airplane, and less like a bicycle.

The fact that people can blame the biker here, simply demonstrates how little regard for traffic rules so many people have. A driver tailgates or drives inattentively or too closely (all things he's REQUIRED not to be doing), and people actually think it's fine. Simply crazy. This is what gets people killed.

Heck, imagine the conversation if the roles were reversed.
*Biker cop gets bumped by a car.
Do you really think the cop would be looking at the situation the same way as in this video, and apologizing for stopping?
Good luck with that.

I'm sure its marker that he just wipes off with his finger. unfortunately we weren't able to see if this trick was fully importu. perhaps a gag that was placed there before he started.
half of magic tricks are done within the first few seconds. The rest is acting.

Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate

bmacs27 says...

Yup. People that don't graduate high school often surround themselves with people that will believe whatever the fuck. Your point marker guy?

arekin said:

Agreed, this video creates a (admittedly well worded) argument that going to college is just liberal indoctrination and not actual education. Fire, the organization they cite seems to be very anti education and seems to be in support of bullying and cyber-bullying of campus students as "free speech".
