"A Fourth Car Absolutely Buggered!" - Deadly Mexican Street

newtboy says...

Krikey….that’s got er, mate. Fair dinkum.

Scary, the street grooves look worn smooth, oily, and probably get icy in winter….and holy shit is it steep! I’m surprised the tiny bollards hold up to that abuse.

Perhaps this one? The narrator is a little annoying in this one.

Google Earth - Paso Florentino takes you right to the street.

That time your accident avoidance system served you well

Homeopathy Explained – Gentle Healing or Reckless Fraud?

notarobot says...

For a while in history, there have been some doctors who would suggest treating a fever with an icy bath. You know, to bring the fever down. What we know now is that raising the body's temperature actually helps the immune system fight off infections. So, if someone has a fever treating the symptom (hot) with the opposite (cold) is usually terrible idea.

What do we do at home when we have a fever? Warm soup or tea. This makes it easier for the body to keep its temperature up. Treating like with like.

Is there some example of where "treat like with like" is useful and insightful? I mean, all I can think of is immunotherapy for allergies.

Just One Of Those Days

MilkmanDan says...

I remember my dad driving me in to town on a school day when we hadn't realized that school had been cancelled because of icy road conditions.

He could drive OK (very very carefully and slowly), but after we discovered that school had been cancelled we parked across the street from my grandma's house and found ourselves unable to walk over the crest of the road. Probably just 1-2 inches higher in the middle than the sides for drainage purposes, but with the perfectly smooth fresh ice, that was enough to make it pretty much completely impossible to "climb" up that very slight incline.

Looks like gravity and adhesion to the tree are causing the same thing for this guy...

Scary stuff, if the trucks can't stop in time to avoid a highly visible explosion and fire, they clearly couldn't stop in time if traffic stopped. This video should be a part of truck driver training.

No One Official Dance Video

newtboy jokingly says...

Um....I'm pretty damn sure that some fisherman flail/hop 'dancing' and falling on an icy pier is in no way an "official" video for anything, much less a well known popular song.
I can also say for certain he's in no way skillful, and this is barely even *dance.

Interstellar - Honest Trailers

rebuilder says...

Spoilers do follow:

What bugged me most was that as a last ditch attempt to save humanity, the NASA successors in the film decided to spend all their time and resources on sending first scouts, then hopefully colonists through an unprecedented wormhole, in the hopes that a suitably survivable planet might be found on the other side. To judge by the film, a lifeless, icy waste without a breathable atmosphere was considered a decent candidate.

So against that background, we come back from the wormhole to a city-sized space station, complete with lawns and baseball.

Why all the trouble? With that level of tech apparently within reasonable reach, why not at least consider colonizing a planet in our own solar system? Why risk everything on a complete unknown?

Karma Is A BItch

Drachen_Jager says...

Okay... human is dumber than his dog. That takes some effort.

When the dog slipped, he couldn't have known that patch was especially icy, but after seeing his dog slip, the guy goes and walks over the exact same patch.

Wow... Human race it was nice knowing you. Dogs... I guess it's your turn to f$%k up the planet for a while.
