How robots could end animal captivity in zoos & marine parks

vil says...

Nurburgring?

I dont have anything against racing electric cars. I think the endeavour to create a mechanical dolphin is most noble. Its still about pushing the limits.

And yet I find the world where the lion tamer cannot step into the cage, the monkey cannot bite your finger off through the bars and you cannot miss a gear heading out of a corner somehow less worth living than the world of my childhood. Yes the smells too.

Maybe the bears are going to miss riding the motorcycle around the arena. Lions born in captivity would be cargo cultists if set free. Push a button to overtake. Sad.

Huh!?
What's wrong with electric car racing? Electric race cars are already outperforming combustion engine vehicles in multiple arenas, just look at the current Pike's Peak record holder, or Nuremberg. Formula E is easily as exciting as F1. Extreme E races electric off road vehicles through the Amazon. Projekt E brings electric vehicles to top tier rally racing, there are many electric rally series. Pure ETCR is a GT racing series.

Do you miss the noise, or the smell? The racing is actually more exciting thanks to 100% torque at all speeds.

Traveling Downwind Faster Than Windspeed

spawnflagger says...

but with this one, the propellor is attached via gears to the wheels, so I don't think it would work if the wheels left the ground.

I'm now half convinced that a "faster than the wind" wind-based aircraft is theoretically possible. It would need to be made of absurdly strong & lightweight materials though.

James May's Tesla Model S has failed!

cloudballoon says...

You can legitimately hate them because you don't like Top Gear or rich people. But here, May is just pointing out a very stupid design flaw. Calling a mechanic won't make the problem go away. He spent an hour looking into the problem, and it's an education for fellow Tesla owners. Is that a crime?

I guest that Tesla Roadster episode especially pissed you off? They're petrolheads, of course they bash the Roadster in those early days of EV to justify the V8 and V12s for their vroom vroom thrills. It's called TV antics (deceptive? Yes). Most have come around to recognize EV is the future. You think every races/segments in Top Gear are unscripted? Come on... Top Gear's been just pure entertainment and no reporting every since Clarkson took over the rein.

Why does James May (or anyone else for that matter) have a
£100k car standing parked for months? A: hes got too much money and cars, thats why. its obscene. if he doesnt drive the fucking thing, sell it, rent it out or better yet, loan it out to someone in need. he'll be helping someone, saving the environment, and get rid of his stupid battery problem, which, if he can afford to have a tesla sitting unused and charged in a garage, he could afford a mechanic to fix for him.

The top gear assholes succeeds to disappoint again, like the time they faked problems with the tesla roadster to give it a thumbs down.

Fuck off , James May.

Explaining Pink Floyd's First Masterpiece

noims says...

It's taken me four attempts to watch this video. Not because it's hard to get through, I just keep realising a few minutes in that I'm just singing along to that amazing song and amn't listening to a word the guy's saying about it.

It's been my go-to song for testing music gear for decades now, as well as my go-to when I'm feeling chill, feeling down, feeling like I want to feel something or nothing, or just want to dream.

I think Echoes is my duvet made audible.

Perceptive lawyer figures abuser and victim in same location

luxintenebris jokingly says...

read the title so that was a big tip-off

believe the greatest suspicion was the plaintiff's vagueness about the attack. the prosecution usually doesn't ask a question they don't know the answer to. the victim's testimony wasn't jiving w/her complaint. something very off. very nervous. in her own house. undoubtedly, ms. davis has dealt w/this (too much) and hearing the woman now trying to soft-sell what happen was likely the tipping point.

was odd that the woman had on winter gear. and she knew his hoodie was gray (looks darker). maybe a cold house? if that was a clue = columbo time.

would like to know the police officer's suspicions too. seemed his expressions matched the prosecutions. quick on the phone too.

Flynn will be the only Democrat pardon by Trump.

Few mistakes, slight miscounts, sure that's what CNN is telling you.
The other side show a whole lot more.

We had a fair and clean election? Really? just last few years is was nothing but Trump fixing the election by fake news, The FIX was in but by Democrats.

I would think they tried this in 2016 which explains why Hillary did not do much stumping. But the party underestimated Trump voters.

This time around the party geared up and told joe to go nap in the basement, the fix was in. But Trump being Trump will not go quietly and is fighting back, Which is his legal right.

newtboy said:

Even Trump knows it's over and started the pardon phase of his lame duck session after supporting the transition beginning. You don't do that, give secret info to a guy you claim is an enemy of the U.S., unless you see no choice.

The amount of mistakes, like slight miscounts and lost ballots, was 1/2 that of the last presidential election according to election officials.
All this fraud talk is just that, talk. The administration has presented no evidence, much less conclusive proof of any mass fraud. Are there even cases still being tried? Not many if any.

We had a fair and clean election, the cleanest this century with no meaningful foreign interference, verified by Trump appointed professionals who's job it is to know.

These idiots you keep listening to are liars, and you know it. The people claiming to have witnessed fraud are liars, not one would testify. The Trump team ensured that would be the case by offering a $1 million bribe to anyone who could testify about proof of cheating, no takers but many tried.

Better send your $8K to the legal defense fund before it gets shut down, Donny's counting on you.

Edit: if it's not over, why aren't you taking that bet? Didn't he offer 100-1 odds? And you won't risk $10, but you'll risk lives and the union over your baseless certitude that democrats cheated and trump will catch them.

Asimov on superstition, religion, and rationality

noseeem jokingly says...

so what the logic behind those sideburns?

just let it all grow. save on shaving gear. as a writer, he'd fit in more with Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, or Whitman* than Elvis.

on a different angle, the atheist apes can be worse than J.W., Mormons, and Evangelist badgers. if a person wants to believe in a higher power - so what? they can get through their days as serenely as the true science maven. religious people can be logical, brilliant, and still put faith in the unproven. no worse than justifying military weapons in the name of science.

after all, having experienced this president, am pushed to believe in True Evil yet simultaneously believing there is no GOD.

no logic or reason to it other than he is a magical troll, and has cast a spell on the townspeople.

Tesla China - Shanghai Gigafactory production line

scheherazade says...

As a 'car guy', the biggest draw to a Tesla [for me] is the acceleration ... and since the model 3, handling is 'good nuff for a stock car'. A model 3 even won scca solo b street.

Eventually they can get their electronics switching fast nuff to maintain torque above 100 (or add a gear), and it will probably be a pretty good track car too.

I never cared for the self driving and whatever else. I just care about the basics. Tesla basics are pretty good.

The down side of tesla is that you can't fix it yourself. Their parts are coded to each other, and even if you replace a bad part with a good one, it won't work till the ECM is coded to it. Pretty much a repair monopoly.

You can replace some control boards/software to help with that, but Tesla detects it and punishes you with a quick charge lockout.

Don't really feel comfortable owning a car I am not allowed to fix.

For someone like me, Tesla has only 1 vulnerability : Other manufacturers can choose to make fast EVs, too.
That's all it would take [for someone like me] to change Tesla from 'the only game in town' to 'just one of many'.

Otter Jumps Onto Boat Escaping Orca With Seconds To Spare

lucky760 says...

What you didn't see after the video ends is that the orca bumped the boat and John fell into the water where he was eaten.

The otter put the boat into gear and high-tailed it out of there. The positive that came out of it was the otter opened Animals for the Ethical Treatment of People (I'm sure you've heard of it), which has been rescuing humans from the jaws of sea creatures ever since.
