FedEx Driver drifting a Jackknifed Truck like a boss

bitterbug says...

Never did a stint as a commercial driver, but passed all the courses and went through down to the Michigan Decision Driving training grounds and did runs in trucks with jacknife scenarios, etc.

He's not drifting there. His trailer brakes are locked up. And because of inertia and ice his trailer is trying to pass his cab.

The goal is to maintain control but keep as low a speed as possible, so you give power to the cab to pull the trailer back into line in a normal situation. In this case he doesn't want to accelerate because there's no safe ground to regain control on, so he's going to aim for keeping the cab going at equal to or just slightly faster than the trailer.

As soon as he hits a clear patch of pavement or level ground then a little bit of acceleration from the cab pulls the trailer back in line behind the cab, drop the acceleration as the drag from the trailer slows you down, etc.

A good reason to always wait before pulling back in after passing a truck on the highway. In an emergency their maneuvers can take long distances when fully loaded. If something goes wrong during your passing maneuver your want to be as far out of their way as possible.

So, some smartass went and reinvented the wheel ...

OK, I don't disagree on any point, except the assumption that an electric car MUST be a 1000KG fully loaded passenger car.
I was thinking more of the non-highway legal, neighborhood kind that might weigh 200lbs.+- where saving 75-100 lbs would make a huge difference, and minimal suspension would still be OK.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

eric3579 says...

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee."
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy.
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty,
that good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
when the "Gales of November" came early.

The ship was the pride of the American side
coming back from some mill in Wisconsin.
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
with a crew and good captain well seasoned,
concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
when they left fully loaded for Cleveland.
And later that night when the ship's bell rang,
could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
and a wave broke over the railing.
And ev'ry man knew, as the captain did too
'twas the witch of November come stealin'.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
when the Gales of November came slashin'.
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
in the face of a hurricane west wind.

When suppertime came the old cook came on deck sayin'.
"Fellas, it's too rough t'feed ya."
At seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in; he said,
"Fellas, it's bin good t'know ya!"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
and the good ship and crew was in peril.
And later that night when 'is lights went outta sight
came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
in the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
the islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below Lake Ontario
takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
with the Gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
in the "Maritime Sailors' Cathedral."
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee."
"Superior," they said, "never gives up her dead
when the gales of November come early!"

Lifeboat Front Flip

EMPIRE says...

I wonder if the test was done with weights inside instead of humans, and I wonder how different the behavior would've been if it was fully loaded or completely empty.

Russian aircraft with a HUGE rocket fuel tank on its back

Ashenkase says...

Agree with BSR, the only vehicle that could get that tank off the ground fully loaded with fuel was the Buran + solid rocket motors.

Woman Stays Deadly Calm During Crash.

chingalera says...

I found out through two incidents in as many days (back-to-back) which happened while working on a contract job on a state highway outside of Newton, Kansas back in the summer of 2002 of an imprinted and innate capacity to "switch-on" in the most dire of circumstances while others on the crew either went into pre-shock or became completely functionless.

Two accidents. two days inna row during our road closures on a dangerous highway fulla truckers trying to beat tolls on the interstate and take the short cut:...both days, 18-wheelers in cruise control blew thorough the closures and caused major fatalities. I was one of 4 people on the crew to switch into rescue and control-mode, when the rest of the world nutted-up. Had state police thinking I was EMS already on the scene...(in my flagman uniform)....Did not know I had it in me, it simply happened. Exhausted me but I had no post-traumatic inabilities the next days, went back to work after the first accident when a couple of guys burned to death with no jaws of life there to save them...did all i could for the victims and my fellow crewmen after.

Next day, assumed flagman position (after having worked on on the main crew having handed my fagging position over to a greenhorn) and another accident, fully-loaded gravel truck was struck by a another 18-wheeler hauling two butane trucks...commanded the scene and kept a woman form going into shock by taking control...5 fatalities when the truck simply compacted two car-fulls of peeps into the back of a fully-loaded gravel truck in the front of the flag line.

I was one of the only people there with my wits about me-Guess I was there for a reason.

I have been in a lot of accidents i simply walked-away from-God works in mysterious ways with the damnedest of sorts.

You want a guy like me around for any potential shit-storm maybe??

This Pizza Is MiiiiiiiiinnnnnnE!

Cat, "Put me down and leave me alone. Or what I do to your stuff later will make Chernobyl and Fukushima look like minor clean ups. If you think I'm bluffing, I've already had the topping off the pizza so I'm fully loaded."

Tesla Model S crash tests - NTSB safest car in history

scheherazade says...

IIRC, $60k for the base model, isn't bad.

You'll pay $55k for a fully loaded crew cab pickup - and those things are all over the place like ants.

Gotta say, I'd consider one... if I can ever break the sports car habbit.

Volvo Trucks - Emergency braking at its best!

thegrimsleeper says...

This truck is fully loaded. According to the description and Volvo's comments on youtube it weighs 40 tons.

RFlagg said:

How well does this work when the trailer is fully loaded? Still impressive, but I want to see it done with a fully loaded trailer.

Also, I wouldn't want to be the driver of the white car. It's one thing when it is a dummy car sitting on the track, but then to drive an actual car and be ready to be hit..

Incredible! Plane crash video from inside cockpit

deathcow says...

1) plane was fully loaded

2) base altitude was 6500 feet

3) hottest part of day combined with local conditions meant this was probably like taking off from 9000+ foot altitude == thin air

This is just careless piloting, not an advertisement.

Texas Siftup Imminent? (Sift Talk Post)

chingalera says...

>> ^kulpims:

will you be carrying guns?

I don't have a concealed carry...Get one and you are subject to even more heinous fines and infractions should you break other laws (pot smoking) whilst so licensed.

You can still legally carry in Texas, a fully-loaded long-arm of any kind not ban-listed, down the street in public. Also, gun racks are still legal, and you can carry shotguns and rifles in your vehicle anytime, as long as yer not a felon or under a restraining order.

Would anyone LIKE me to bring some guns??

Devastating Effects of Getting Rear-Ended by a Truck

chingalera says...

pretty nasty
