Joseph Gordon-Levitt Recreates David After Dentist

Now factor in all the people in early life going without quality healthcare/dental and the chronic conditions it might lead to later in life that will eventually bite the taxpayer in the ass...

That's the part that never breaks the surface of this debate, keeping your populace healthy (and happy) pays itself back in a more healthy mid-late age person, capable of staying in the workforce (and ergo generating tax revenue) longer, self funding retirement as opposed to "leeching" off the system, less sick day absenteeism (or alternately, sick workers showing up, working below par and infecting co-workers) etc.

That's not socialism, that's smart.

I'd be amazed if no one ever actually quantified this as a cost/benefit analysis, but it wouldn't play well so I guess the point is moot.

And yeah, the state should regulate the medical and pharmaceutical industries against ludicrous profit taking from the most vulnerable. The current state of play in the US seems more akin to a mafia extortion racket than a service dedicated to maintaining and enriching the health of it's clientele...

Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?

chingalera says...

Emergency services are all I care about-Bone-sets, stitches, wound care and antibiotics should be free of charge to all citizens of planet Babylon, worldwide. So should general dentistry. The machine (a type of prison) now requires that we play the societal-shuffle according to their economic rules (which are violated with impunity daily by the rule-makers) should not the slave-masters keep their labor force from breaking-down too soon?? Inmates in prisons in the United States receive free emergency and necessary dental maintenance, eh?

Dr Apologizes for Being SO WRONG About Medical Marijuana

Procrastinatron says...

I definitely agree that society in general is, and always has been, poisoned by ideology. Well, ideology and religion. Society is, always has been, and probably always will be, defined by a majority that finds excuses to stay stupid, and a minority that never stops looking for more ways to manipulate others into giving them more power.

In this case, however, I don't think that's what's happening. Really, I think that Samuels just happens to be overzealous because the only context within which he ever interacts with drugs in any way is one in which they are abused, with no possibility of responsible use even existing. It's much like a dentist who cannot understand who normal people don't turn dental hygeine into a religion like they do, or an oncologist who cannot for the life of him understand why more people don't live their entire lives in constant fear of getting cancer.

They only ever see the worst, so the worst is what they learn to expect. For them, the negative extreme becomes the norm.

And that is why they cannot be expected to provide a comprehensive view of their subject matters. A valuable and important view, of course, because they do know a fuck of a lot more than us plebes who haven't dedicated our lives to the study of their chosen subject, but... not a comprehensive one.

@Procrastinatron That's my take as always, on the underlying nature of propaganda/newspeak/mass mind control in the 21st Century-CNN is an extreme example consisting of bobbleheads spewing shit-think and while producing infotainment, agenda-establishing dialogs, or a window into human tragedy the parent company Turner Broadcasting, sucks cock by choice. There is ALWAYS an agenda in mind that works for a very few who hold the keys to our economic shackles-Follow the money, follow the power, and discover children, the true nature of the bullshit-

...Wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the mentality of the strawman here, all the signs of an addictive personality, spewing the party-line like so much projectile vomit.

Look people, your bullshit-dentist radar should have gone up when you saw the name of the place: Amazing Family Dental clinic...WTF, Illinois??!

Did this idiot see the chart and mistake the extractions for good teeth???...I think so! I'd have the fucker's practice.

One Pissed Off Democrat in Michigan Speaks Up

^ I've been in a union for near twenty years now. I'm sorry the company you worked for was so lax towards their employees and what they expected of them. Mine isn't, and people are hired and fired if they can't cut it. We get excellent medical and dental and earn more than non-union shops in the same industry.

You really like unions, but you support this bill? That's like talking out your mouth and your ass at the same time. You have a problem with lazy people, huh? And your solution is to get rid of unions? There's a guy like you in every shop. Doesn't have the seniority for a choice bid, so he hates all the "lazy" fucks he has to work with that have already put in their time (years) working the shitty bid you're stuck with. The problem isn't unions. It's companies who treat their employees like inmates, and hero co-workers like yourself who nobody wants to work with anyway. You really like unions? You have no fucking clue what they are and what they have done for you and the middle class in this country. You should be thankful they earn enough disposable income to cross the bridge and spend their money up there.

Well, had the first appearance of the words "man" and "boy" today, but it was in the same conversation (comedic performance actually), and they were completely replaceable. Will keep watching for more.

I'd have probably run across our targets more under normal circumstances, but between the election, dental work, and my own job, this week has been a bit crowded...not much time for browsing the web.

American Dentistry is a huge racket. A single dental implant, (not covered), mysteriously cost right around $1700 USD. The price is the same at any dentist you go to in the entire country.

I've lived in Thailand for almost 6 years now, and I was a poor college student/graduate prior to that. So, I hadn't had any dental treatment whatsoever for about 10 years. At that time in the US in my small hometown, I figured that a cleaning with nothing else done would cost $100. Plus the dentists wanted to do x-rays every year that would be another $50-$100. So, basically $150-200 yearly assuming that I didn't get anything other than a simple cleaning.

So far I've been lucky to have teeth that stay in pretty good condition. I hadn't had any cavities in adult teeth, but 10 years without a trip to the dentist was pushing it. So, I figured it was time to bite the bullet and visit a dentist here in (upcountry) Thailand. I walked in and they said that I had 3 cavities and 2 small weak spots that could turn into cavities.

They asked me if I would like old-style metal colored fillings or new tooth-colored stuff (I didn't even know that existed). I opted for the old style since it was slightly cheaper, but the doc was upset about the prospect of putting the first visible fillings in my otherwise pristine teeth so she said she would give me the tooth-colored ones for the same price as the other type.

In and out, far less pain and discomfort than I remember being standard at my dental visits in the US (to be fair I had a lot of cavities and problems with my baby teeth when I was a kid, plus braces and lots of orthodontic work). Total cost -- about $40 USD. For yearly cleanings, I think the local clinic here will charge about $15 USD. So, I'm well pleased with the results.

Yes, I heard about this when Marketplace released it.

But let's be honest. No one goes to Dentists they've never been to before out of the blue for random surgery. What they suggest is purely a suggestion. Like any other business, the up-sell for cosmetic reasoning will always be available and just because they offer it, doesn't mean you have to do it.

The prices they quote are also the price before or without dental coverage. (I do understand not all coverage is the same)

There is also going to be overzealous Dentists, usually new dentists who just want to do all those big procedures because they enjoy the bigger jobs.
No one should be rushing into these procedures. You should stay with one dentist over time and build a relationship with them. I've never had a issue with any of my dentists. I've heard of people being offered specific services but they are all elective - and few move forward with them unless necessary.

I avoid any dental work for my family or myself if it's purely for cosmetic reasons (especially whitening- teeth aren't supposed to be white). You don't want to do it? Don't do it. But they are going to let you know your options. I think this is different than being told, "You must do it, if you don't, all your teeth are going to fall out and you will be in pain for the rest of your life."

-just doesn't happen.

Holy crap - That's expensive.

I have Dental coverage at work. I pay about $60 a month and that covers all dental for my family of four. Some extreme things have an extra cost but $150 for a crown is nothing compared to New Zealand.
