Who knew metal milling machine could be such fun?

vex says...

I work in a CNC machine shop programming lathes. That isn't aluminum they are machining. It's definitely steel, probably 4340.

Carbide inserts are more than capable of cutting metal without coolant. Well formed chips absorb and carry most of the heat away. You start to run into problems with gummy materials (like aluminum) that form a built up edge on the cutter. In this case high pressure coolant can be used to help break the long stringy chips and keep them from sticking to the insert.

One case where using coolant can be detrimental to tool life is when machining a part with an interrupted cut. Think of sliding your finger over a surface with a bunch of holes in it. Your finger switches back and forth between making contact with the surface and gliding over empty space. In the machining world, this motion would cause abrupt transient temperature changes, and coolant can sometimes exacerbate the problem and cause the carbide insert to crack or chip.

(pedantry) I would hesitate to call that machine a mill. You can see the machine switching freely between rotating the part to provide the cutting force (turning) to rotating the tool (milling). It's more akin to a horizontal turning center with a milling spindle built in as well. Pretty awesome stuff! (/pedantry)

Awesome, Unique Design Makes this Lock Un-Pickable

MilkmanDan says...

Engineering a way to prevent picking (or at least make it VERY hard -- never say never) is cool. But, the fact that it remains weak against all the other ways to circumvent a lock (grinder, bolt cutter, hacksaw, hammer, whatever) would mean that I wouldn't want to pay very much for one even though the design is impressive.

I figure that 95%+ of the purpose of a lock is to prevent "casual" theft/entry. If someone *really* wants in there, it doesn't much matter how good your lock is.

Oakland CA Is So Scary Even Cops Want Nothing To Do With It

BigAlski says...

Shite like this is the reason I moved out of California, living in good old Saint Paul, Minnesota now. Oxnard California is like a mini-Oakland. Here I have a 3000sf home built in 1901, 1 mile from downtown and no worries. My daughter is 10mos, one due in July, and we so enjoy walks in the neighborhood in the summer. My stepson walks to baseball 1 mile away, we meet him there pushing baby and walking dog, walk home as an American Family. It makes it all worth while. My wife is a CPA but I am a blue collar truck driver.

I think there are ALL KINDS of problems that lead to places like this in Cali... Fresno is almost as bad. Parts of the low desert are very bad, etc. If you want to write 2 page posts defending your view of WHY, maybe that's one of the reasons why as well, and you should define it, man up, and put it in there at number 12 or whatever. Sure "democratic stronghold" is part of the problem. American counter-culture has also been rewarding consumerism above all else for decades. Asians, Latinos, and Blacks cash in today and sell out tomorrow. The west coast is also way too expensive, real estate is too high, and money is the only incentive.

Obviously there is a problem. The left wants to look at answers that sound might or will help but accountability cant be ignored. The right wants to go to war and justify a police state when we are all Americans defining our on future together.

As a side note I might have had 10-15 encounters with these types over the years in and around Oxnard and if their skin was white and I was armed, maybe they would have died...or me. Who knows, there are always more than one way to deal with a problem. In the end the minorities pay the price and it isn't fair. They get worse jobs, their property isnt worth ShXXt, their children receive a poor education. Cookie-cutter whites, in the end, benefit on the left. The drive their Volvo SUVs on highways to schools or doctors or what have you paid for by the masses.

Homeless Veteran Timelapse Transformation

shveddy says...

He'd be completely hirable with a 10 dollar haircut at cost cutters, a dress shirt and some slacks.

The fanfare, expense and emphasis on the physical aspect of his transformation over to the lip service his real challenging journey gets, is some gross combination of a marketing ploy and the worst aspects of our society's desire for cute feel good stories and absolutely zero depth, realism or true compassion.

If you were an employer interviewing people for a job, would you hire the man @0:05 or @2:01 ?

While not the cure for alcoholism, I think this boosted his self-esteem, and gave him just enough confidence to try to turn his life around. Hopefully AA will help him stop drinking.

No, but her performance on the voice australia could have used some. http://celiapavey.com/ (Alll her vids), "Xanadu" in particular.....Maybe it's nerves, but she knocks em out flat one after another in that tune, and the wobbly Gaelic yodel affectation did not help.....Sorry, very critical of cookie-cutter talent....Other wise she's in a great place to develop at 19...studies music at the Australian Institute of Music.

Gate Locking Fail.

MilkmanDan says...

This. Locks are generally only going to prevent casual / opportunistic theft -- anybody that *really* wants in there would only be delayed a few seconds with a bolt cutter anyway.

Meh. It looks locked, which is good enough most of the time, provided they don't store anything particularly valuable in their dumpsters, which seems unlikely.

Fletch pretty much said everything i wanted to say. Possibly the stupidest thing that has come out of gun lobbies is the parking lot sales where guns just disappear from the system. And no amount of "militia" rhetorics make any sense; if government wants you, they'll get you. They do have stealth bombers ffs. Your AR-15 won't even make a scratch on that tank running your house flat. In order for personal weapons to be a viable counter balance to military forces is when you are some where along ratios of 1/10, not 1/10000. You make a lot more damage under oppression with a wrench, wire cutter or blowtorch in the dead of night than what armed confrontation with superior force will achieve.
