Chris Forsberg slides his car up a mountain in California

Payback says...

I have to say, of all the companies who decided to attach their name to an energy drink, NOS seems to be one of the most appropriate...

Like, I wouldn't bother with a Raybestos energy drink. One, it's a brake company, meant to slow you down, and two, I wouldn't feel right drinking something that rhymes with asbestos.

Rope Start a Car With a Dead Battery

Payback says...

I know he says that neither option is available to you, but I figure this particular method, performed apparently by yourself, pulling the car towards you, supported by the cheap shit jack your car came with, would be a recipe for disaster.

You trip, the jack flops over, the car drives over you. The parking brake is designed to stop your car from rolling, not stop it from moving in the gear with the most torque at low RPMs.

In this day and age, there is almost nowhere you couldn't call AAA (CAA in Canada). This is silly and dangerous.

Not sure if this family needs another child...

You fuckers, it's called a brake pedal. I just love how her only concern is for the trucks underside, not that her baby daddy apparently just killed someone's *pet in front of their kids without pause, or at best just intentionally ran over someone's dead (or just injured) pet.
Great parenting.
Looks a bit faked in my hyper suspicious eyes, and either way it's horrible all around.

FedEx Driver drifting a Jackknifed Truck like a boss

bitterbug says...

Never did a stint as a commercial driver, but passed all the courses and went through down to the Michigan Decision Driving training grounds and did runs in trucks with jacknife scenarios, etc.

He's not drifting there. His trailer brakes are locked up. And because of inertia and ice his trailer is trying to pass his cab.

The goal is to maintain control but keep as low a speed as possible, so you give power to the cab to pull the trailer back into line in a normal situation. In this case he doesn't want to accelerate because there's no safe ground to regain control on, so he's going to aim for keeping the cab going at equal to or just slightly faster than the trailer.

As soon as he hits a clear patch of pavement or level ground then a little bit of acceleration from the cab pulls the trailer back in line behind the cab, drop the acceleration as the drag from the trailer slows you down, etc.

A good reason to always wait before pulling back in after passing a truck on the highway. In an emergency their maneuvers can take long distances when fully loaded. If something goes wrong during your passing maneuver your want to be as far out of their way as possible.

I thought the rear trailer's brakes were locked and it just slid to the downhill side of the road on the ice. Not sure if you'd call that intentional or not.

If that wasn't a double trailer, I'd say you're right. No way that was intentional though.

Tesla Predicts a 2 Car Crash Ahead of Driver

Curious says...

Tesla enthusiast here. The Tesla vehicle is able to use its front-mounted radar to track one car beyond the car in front of it. How does it do this? It bounces the radar signal off the street underneath the first car. In this case the Tesla could determine the position and velocity of two vehicles in front of it and it predicted a collision, sounded the alarm, and applied the brakes.

So no, it's not that the cameras are tracking objects through another vehicle's windows (at least not yet). Radar can also see though zero-visibility conditions like snow and fog.

That was pretty cool. I wonder if the Tesla's sensors could still "see" the braking SUV as it is a bigger vehicle than the red car that rear ended it. We can't see the sides of the SUV in the video, until the red car begins its lane change, because of the wide-angle dashcam but perhaps the Tesla's sensors could.

I think the driver of the red car, who wanted to change lanes, was fixated on the black car in the right hand lane and didn't see the SUV suddenly brake. If the red car had collision avoidance capabilities, this accident would likely have been prevented.

even cooler, as of a recent update the Tesla can actually bounce radar underneath and around the car ahead to the one in front of it (albeit probably at a lower resolution)
"Taking this one step further, a Tesla will also be able to bounce the radar signal under a vehicle in front - using the radar pulse signature and photon time of flight to distinguish the signal - and still brake even when trailing a car that is opaque to both vision and radar."

I think the Tesla must've been watching the back-end of the SUV through the windows of the car behind and detected the distance between them was closing too quickly. And maybe it also took into account that the brake lights were firing.

In any case, freaking awesome safety technology. Wish I had it.

I agree. The car in front didn't even slow down or apply the brakes. I'll bet they weren't even paying attention. This shows the Tesla knew what was going on ahead.

I think this is correct, but it's impressive that it was tracking both the car immediately in front of it as well as the car in front of that car.
