...and back

Even apart from trying not to over-use the 3g data plan, I managed to brick my notebook... we've been testing a bug in the encryption software, and had it set to brick if you closed the lid without shutting it down first... and guess who forgot about that little booby trap?

Nooooooooo!!!!!!!

I think I'd probably better wait until I'm home for that one... trying not to over-use my work modem's data allowance... stupid thing is we do have another one we could've brought, with data we need to use up, but weren't quite organised enough.

My First Figure Drawing Class

robbersdog49 says...

Many many moons ago when I was seventeen we started doing life drawing at my school. there were a few models they used but the most common two were a lady about thirty, nice looking, slightly plump but attractive and Alan. Alan was a thirtyish year old gay guy who was just very average looking. Physique wise he was 5' 10" or so, maybe just under 200lbs, slightly balding, wore glasses. Nothing offensive but as a seventeen year old lad I obviously started off preferring drawing boobies to schlong.

Thing is, I always drew better when drawing Alan because I just wasn't as distracted I suppose. He was a really nice guy and we got to know him pretty well over the year or so we did the class. I'd grown up doing a lot of sailing at a club with communal showers for the men so naked guys were no mystery to me. I wasn't offended by him and he certainly never did any poses like the guy in this video.

Fast forward ten years and I'm at a friend's house party. I know about half the people there and there's a lot of people from her work that I don't know. She worked at a medieval castle as a wench for their banquets and a lot of her actor colleagues were there. I kept catching the eye of this guy, forty years or so old, 5' 10" and just over 200lbs, pretty bald. You know when you get that feeling that you know someone? The face is familiar but you can't for the life of you remember where you've seen him before. Worse was the feeling that it was someone I knew quite well, not just someone I'd bumped into in the supermarket or something like that.

He looked puzzled by me too and we eventually got talking in the kitchen about where we knew each other from. We went through everything, from what we did for a job, where we'd worked, where we lived and drew blanks every time.

We went further and further back in time until he stopped, grinned and said 'you didn't go to Woodland's school did you?'

In that instant I knew exactly who he was, laughed and completely without thinking blurted 'Alan! I didn't recognise you with your clothes on!'

Of course it went quiet and I had to explain to my wife why I didn't recognise the gay guy with his clothes on (not helped by the fact that it was an all boys school). I still have paintings and drawings of him in my attic somewhere, which my wife was 'thrilled' to be shown!

Life drawing is great, and you don't need a 'fit' or attractive model. Anyone will do, in fact the more normal the better I think. It helps you look at what's there rather than any sort of ideal you might have in your head.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Drones

newtboy says...

Pakistan, yes. I think we have at least a small force there. Not at all sure about the others, but likely we've got some there.
Those are not the only places we've droned, not even the places we've droned the most. Try Afghanistan and Iraq. You just hear about it more when we do it in places we aren't technically 'at war' with.

It makes little difference what the delivery system of the explosive is, that's why I always wondered what the big deal is about suicide bombers. They're just another delivery system, a low tech, radar cloaked delivery system. It's the bombing/indiscriminate killing that matters. Right? Not the delivery system.

Drones have their proper uses, and improper uses. Bombing someone you can see is setting up a booby trap to kill you or allies is appropriate. Bombing people based on their height is an improper use. This has little to do with the drone, and more to do with the leadership and their 'rules' for who's a target. For me, it's not about 'drone vs manned aircraft' though, it's 'giant bomb vs precision assassination'.

Do you think Obama is watching a little screen deciding 'bomb that guy, and that building'? He is not involved at that level, and you know it. I don't trust a disinterested tech thousands of miles removed from their actions to do the right thing, they've proven they can't be trusted, and they're the one's that matter in this instance. That said, if there were much better rules for engagement and they were draconically enforced, I would have little problem with keeping expensive planes and pilots out of danger.

We have boots on the ground in Waziristan, pakistan and Yemen?

What diff does it make to you if it's a missile off an unmanned aircraft or a missile off a manned aircraft?

Drones are looking where there are no other assets. They see a guy planting an IED, they can take care of it right then.

Now, if you want to say you don't trust Obama to do the right thing...that we can agree on.

Suppose Chappelle has lost his allure as the "Flavor of the Week." Never expected it to be sifted(or embedded) or garner many views. I deliberately uploaded it to YT with no tags and an obtuse title because of Comedy Central and potential copyright warnings. Had an account banned from YT because of that before, a Chappelle segment was one of the "warnings" I got. The "New York Boobies" skit.

Still planning-on doing the cookie-cooking, looks like it's you and Lilithia. Remind me again which recipe you submitted, the chocky-chips or the one from orriteropo similar to his? BTW, I considered the cost of mailing two-dozen cookies to Australia and was gonna ask Dag if he might wanna give him a T-Shirt instead, me paying for the cost of the shirt and to ship it in-country from his end....Could be just as pricey considering how covetous he is of those ugly-ass shirts!! (Seriously, thought the thing unworthy of public wear, prob'ly works better as a nightshirt )

So yes, end of month this month on the cookies, as soon as I pm Lilithia again and make sure she's still on board with participating. I may do them this Friday and let the judging begin Saturday, as I'm supposed to be hitting the pub with the gorgeous judges this weekend with old friends from out of town.
That taco-meat idea for that chili-pepper mix is an excellent choice of use of that can-o-sauce-Sounds like something I wanna try now!!

MMMmmm, haven't had taco nite inna while.
