Stephen Hawking sings Monty Python's Galaxy Song

ChaosEngine says...

I dunno... he sounded like pretty much every other auto-tuned bullshit in the charts... this could probably go number 1.

Besides, Hawking has also been more of a rapper..

That comment is a reflection on what I hear on a daily basis.
Perhaps my wordage is off, but the stuff coming at us 24-7 is created by studios, not musicians. So much of what I hear is produced by guys sitting at mixer boards and computers.
My comment isn't aimed at every person out there making music, in fact I know there are lots of musicians out there with talent and skill..., but we never get to hear them over all the crap being dealt out by the industry which is breeding Egos as musicians. (I'd choose Beck over Beyonce any day of the week.)

Sure, I know, it may seem like I'm digging a hole and jumping in but the system is broken and the good music is being squelched. Maybe not 100% of the time, but listen to the music. The electronic age is filtering everything out of the music, no more drummer, no guitar, auto tune, synthetic voice. where is all the character? Where are all the happy accidents that real music serves us. How many of today's artistes (on the charts) can serve us music without a guy mixing it to make them sound good, double tracking, and keeping their voices in tune? I know these tricks have been used for years but never to the extent they are being used today.

I remember a quote by Niel Young, way back when he was recording. The guys at the board keep telling him he wasn't hitting the note, and his answer was "Hey, that's my style man!" So they had to leave it in, and the result was great. Pure Niel Young.

So, I guess it's not so much the musicians out there, so much as it is the recording studios, and the system of pump out the next clone hit...

It was Tony James that initiated this era, back when he created Sigue Sigue Sputnik. He had a dream, a vision of what the band looked and sounded like. He hired people that looked like what he wanted, none could play music, he taught them three chords and they they became the number one, unrecorded, unsigned band in history, and EMI finally Won (relative term) by offering them the most money. From that point all the music was produces electronically in the studio. It sounded like crap, but I loved it. It was new and sounded different. And people ate it up. The studios caught on, and realized they didn't need musicians any more, they always wanted money. It made more sense to hire nobodies, they were a dime a dozon and they could be made to sound any way they wanted them too. Just like the Boy Bands and Girl Bands (Spice girls, Pussy Cat Dolls)

Okay... so I'm rambling now..., it's been a long day...
The industry feeds us synthetic garbage because it's cheep, makes money and is easily replaced by the next song/artist.

Meanwhile the real artists are doing everything they can to get recognized and struggle to make a living giving us their soul served in a song and doing everything they can to be heard over the sounds of the industry.

Need More Proof That The Music Industry Is Fake? Here You Go

Grimm says...

Also to be fair that's a bunch of bullshit...the technology exists to overcome all of those issues. You really can't count it as she IS singing if no one can hear it and what they can hear is a pre-recorded track...one that was most likely auto-tuned so even THAT isn't a live pre-recording.

I just don't get the logic of the fans and the defenders....you like the music you "hear" on the radio...you like the music you "hear" on your CDs or MP3s. When you are paying top dollar to "hear" and now "see" that music performed live why is it OK to let the "live music" slide and be sacrificed for a dog and pony show that doesn't have anything to do with the music you were drawn to in the first place?

Also, to be fair, when someone doesn't have a loop back of their voice, and there's tons of sound so they can't hear themselves directly, it's like a deaf person singing. Britney IS singing. This would not be accurately described as lip-sync as in the Milli Vanilli crap. This is definitely "overdubbing" with the second track being edited out. Also, as she knows her voice isn't actually being amplified, she's not really trying. This isn't an Autotuned performance either.

Shania Twain murders AC/DC

SquidCap says...

It's not autotune on Shanias channel, i would dare to say zero correction (listen to the end of lines where her compulsory "yeahs" are, no autotune can follow those..) On the backup singer channel, could be or she is just one of those incredibly "flat" singers that have the ability to not use even a slightest vibrato (meaning, very very good backup singer, almost too good technique.. ) But it's totally flat, meaning, autotune can be used. But you or i can not hear the difference unless we hear that channel separated, in the mix not a chance in hell you can say without doubt for one way or the other..

Even i don't really like her or the music, she is quite good singer in the first place, doesn't actually need any correction but i'm 100% sure all of her albums since 2000 have been autotuned but then it's more detailed, programmed over time to sound natural perfection (each phrase is done seperately, there are deliberate out-off-tune bits etc. which happens on every record, yes, even those metal ones you listen cause of originality. Especially metal albums these days are the most heavily touched and processed after "Britney" department..)

On-the-fly auto tuning has serious drawbacks compared to off-line auto tuning. Basically, "live" autotunes are Kanye West type super duper obvious ones. In this clip, main vocals are definitely real.

I don't think that's auto-tune. You can still hear Shania's voice in that. I think what you're hearing is a backup singer who's at just the right pitch to combine with Twain's voice to sound like it's auto-tuned. Having said that, though, I can't say for sure because I could only listen to it for so long before I had to stop the video.

I wonder if it would sound better with some intentional imperfections, say some off timing maybe an off note here and there. Same issue with perfect pitch, Auto-Tune voices.

Gibson guitars now tune themselves robotically

MilkmanDan says...

It looks to me like it has to be activated before it attempts to auto-tune or alters the tuning in any way, so that kinda mitigates both the bad and the good (OK, mostly just the bad).

I've never had a Floyd-Rose guitar myself, but my friends have. Where I have to re-tune only sporadically, sometimes those damn things are a nightmare. On the other hand, some people seem to get them to be pretty stable.

I think this is a good idea for an option -- and very interesting tech -- but not something that I would personally want on a guitar. The other thing that I thought of is, how does it handle standard tunings that aren't in A440? What if I want standard E in A444?

Gibson guitars now tune themselves robotically

overdude jokingly says...

Because there is truly nothing to be gained by actually learning how to properly tune a guitar yourself.... No side benefits like, oh I don't know, ear training, relative pitch, proper intonation, or even the ability to recognize that you happen to own a shitty guitar that never stays in tune (how could you when it's always staying in tune).

That's right folks... You saw and heard it first with the oldest instrument in the world, the voice. Now you can have that same lazy approach applied toward your favorite stringed instrument. Introducing Auto-Tune... for your guitar. Now you'll never hear - OR PLAY - music the same way ever again!!!

Soul and R&B is in digression like most forms of popular music-The phenomena follows a pattern with the downfall of any great culture or society. World in decline = art in decline.

From lame-ass, base human experience lyrics like these to auto-tuning and other such overproduction designed to mask innate lack of talent, R&B has suffered the worst of the described decline. This song = complete, talent-free shit, but for those that have no reference, maybe it sounds what...Goodish??
