Man Shot Dead In Drunken Militia Dispute

bremnet says...

Open carry is the straw that breaks the bouncers' backs? Um, no. It's not suddenly Blazing Saddles here. If you're licensed to carry, most have enough common sense NOT to carry openly in our bars because drunks are temporarily or permanently dumb. The bouncers still fear the nut-jobs with knives, brass knuckles, and ice picks tucked into their boot - it's not about the weapon, it's about the person holding it. Once the mentally challenged get into the parking lot, all bets are off and whatever can be used as a weapon often is. Bat, chain, antenna, canoe paddle, road flare etc.

We lecture people endlessly about how stupid it is to drink and drive, but loaded firearms? Sure, what could possibly go wrong?
When they started allowing open carry in bars in Texas I wonder how many bouncers just quit, right there and then.

Cord Cutters Unite! (User Poll by dag)

I am between (closer to no). Ever since I moved last year, I can't get all the local broadcast channels OTA with all types of antenna. My rural nest is blocked by trees, small mountains, giant hills, etc. Basically, it is on the wrong side to get transmitters' feeds compared to my previous nest. So, my family had to get cable.

As for online Netflix, it doesn't have everything like the new episodes, sports, etc. and I don't watch many (movie/film)s (prefer on demand payments to rent). Hulu bugs me with their repeating commercial breaks (even as Plus members!). I hate ad(vertisement)s hence why I block, skip (record!), etc. ~22 minutes out of 30 minute episodes and ~42 minutes out of an hour episodes! That's a lot. Also as a chair (no couch) potato, I watch a lot of stuff including Internet's like on VS (VS is my tube too) and am in control!

Region blockages suck, but we have Internet. There are ways around them if you know how.

"Gangstas Paradise" - (Very Cool 1920's Version)

Yeah, those episodes. I saw them over the air (OTA) with an antenna. CBS was tricky in making them HD (all they did was cropped so it looked like they were wide screen and in HD). Are all episodes in colors now? I'd love to rewatch the classics in colos.

Over the holidays they released a couple of newly colorized episodes. Very awesome watching it.

I've been making my way through watching every episode again (I watched them all many times growing up). I'm on season 4 episode 28 where they're in Los Angeles and meet Harpo Marx. "Bend. Knee. Feet."

Any newer (< 10 years old?) TV is already digital, and you can just plug a digital antenna directly to it, no box required. If yours is older, you can get a free converter box coupon from the gov. Info found here....
http://www.pbs.org/digitaltv/converter_boxes.php

EDIT: Crap. I didn't read it. The coupon program expired in 2009. Sorry.

Nope.
Not here.
It's all digital here now, so no antenna is going to do the job without hooking up and using the box they supply.

You don't have to buy cable to watch TV. You can use over the air (OTA) antenna to get local channels assuming you're not blocked and close enough to the transmitters.

I don't watch regular TV for two reasons.
1). The shows are so dumbed down, I find them insulting.
2). Cable access is so ridiculously over priced, and they force you to pay for channels you don't want.

As far as commercials. I view commercials as short films. They have 30-60 seconds to sell a concept and a story. Most fail, but some get it right.

Price Is Right Fools Don't Know How Much An iPhone Costs

SFOGuy says...

lol. Yes, if only that was an actual option. The problem is, in my experience of having been on diferent networks---for anyone who travels, the two biggest and most expensive networks to be on---AT&T and Verizon--offer the broadest and most competent voice and data networks.

They can be slaughtered pricewise by Sprint and T-Mobile in any given location---and maybe, if that location has a good antenna network, be given a decent run for the money by these cheaper networks...

Of course, if you want the cheapest mobile phone plan, you end up with a sort of hybrid phone --Republic---which uses Wifi calling when in range of a network you've signed onto---and Sprint's network otherwise.

And that's the American story...

Just tap into the undersea fibre, there are repeaters every few miles.

Seriously though, I never thought about it. My guess would be not very well, and after a quick search I found this video - http://youtu.be/49K2hjV9OOY ("How to make your GoPro WiFi working underwater"), so there wouldn't be a need for such an "antenna extender" if WiFi did work well enough under water.

Any submarine experts on the sift??
I suspect that very low frequencies could work, but there is probably a max depth below which they couldn't communicate well.

Phonebloks

spawnflagger says...

This guys points are very valid.
I'd be happy to see a modular standard (like ATX) for notebooks/laptops, but there is none.

Truth is - for portable devices consumers demand them to be smaller, cheaper, and have better battery life. PhoneBloks would be larger, more expensive, and more power hungry than the highly-integrated designs for portable electronics nowadays.

I think a practical starting point would be a standard "socket" for an SoC, which could be upgradeable. The part you keep would be the screen, pcb, antennas, etc. The SoC could itself be an MCM, with multiple stacked layers. You would have to upgrade this "base" once in a while too, but only with release of new wireless standards that work at different frequencies.

Having a standard size & voltage lithium battery for phones would be nice too. Could anyone imagine how much it would suck if AA and AAA batteries didn't exist for other electronics?

I also vote microSDXC as standard for flash storage.

Little Girl and her Carpenter Pet Bee

Imagine breaking your leg in a strange world and being taken by a giant insect 1000x your size... who feeds you mashed meat off the end of a tree trunk. Isolated from any one else... kept in confinement... and 'petted' by a giant antenna that could crush you at any moment.

I bet he's screaming for us to let him die.... If only we could hear...
