Everything You Need To Know About Digital Audio Signals

MilkmanDan says...

This goes beyond my knowledge level of signals and waveforms, but it was very interesting anyway.

That being said, OK, I'm sold on the concept that ADC and back doesn't screw up the signal. However, I'm pretty sure that real audiophiles could easily listen to several copies of the same recording at different bitrates and frequencies and correctly identify which ones are higher or better quality with excellent accuracy. I bet that is true even for 16bit vs 24bit, or 192kHz vs 320kHz -- stuff that should be "so good it is impossible to tell the difference".

Since some people that train themselves to have an ear for it CAN detect differences (accurately), the differences must actually be there. If they aren't artifacts of ADC issues, then what are they? I'm guessing compression artifacts?

In a visual version of this, I remember watching digital satellite TV around 10-15 years ago. The digital TV signal was fine and clear -- almost certainly better than what you'd get from an analog OTA antenna. BUT, the satellites used (I believe) mpeg compression to reduce channel bandwidth, and that compression created some artifacts that were easy to notice once somebody pointed them out to you. I specifically remember onscreen people getting "jellyface" anytime someone would nod slowly, or make similar periodic motions. I've got a feeling that some of the artifacts that we (or at least those of us that are real hardcore audiophiles) can notice in MP3 audio files are similar to an audio version of that jellyface kind of issue.

WTF: Ukrainian Plant Radio

It's not SUCH a bad idea if they don't hang out near those RF's for more than a few ticks...That massive antennae is blasting out radio frequencies that are right at the max of non-hazardous (ionizing) levels. Best they don't stay too long at the base of that monster! Bet it makes one's nose tickle and head begin to ache after about 45 minutes around it.

fuckballs on the mimosa! that sucks!!
have you tried acacia confusa?

You are right. I only know of one person that continues to study DMT and that is Rick Strassman, unfortunately. DMT really needs to be studied, it is like an antenna into other dimensions. I would never be able to describe the 4d, holographic, complex, ornate, alien worlds I have flown through with my eyes closed. Those are just some words that do not come close to a description.

To me what matters is that our society reevaluates its stance on drugs and medicine. So many illegal drugs are harmless and non addictive. They used to say that MDMA would put holes in your brain and that LSD would make one jump out of a window. Its all bullshit. Right now I can no longer get DMT because the DEA decided to bust distribution of mimosa hostilis. What right do they have?

Now these assholes just need to study DMT to unlock the mysteries of our minds and the universe

I think academia, which is often ruled by the ego and is based on a competitive system, is ill able to really delve into psychedelics, which pretty much requires at least the start of ego death and the base awareness that the ego is the primary limiting factor in conscious development.

You are so cool, I can't hardly stand it.

It is weird to have antenna tuned to these four words, isn't it? If nothing else comes out of this exchange, knowing that that happened for a day or two, and that you noticed the noticing, is deeply fascinating to me.

Thanks!

(You know, reading an online article with the word "man" in it counts towards this experiment. A biography of Einstein would have the word "man" in it...)

Storm, you said you would be willing to do this experiment ... have you noticed any word situations like this yet? Gorilla, you never answered my question, so I am taking it that you are declining the experiment?

Have yet to run into any use of any of those words, other than your post... It's rather what I figured would happen. We'll see if it happens over the next day or two.

FWIW, I'm definitely primed to notice any of the four now though, which is a rather odd feeling in and of itself. :

New Earth bound telescopes are closest to Outer Space!

bareboards2 says...

But of course. Silly me. I knew that.... I was just excited.

And yeah, what is special is the altitude -- a dry place high up so not as much atmosphere between the antennae and what they are watching.

I love that they are approaching the idea of an observatory in a different way. Not one huge telescope but an array.

The idea of antennae array has been around for a long time, so I don't know what is so special about these exactly. I mean, remember contact, when she goes to the desert...and there were like dozens of antenna? That was a antennae array, and there are several space array systems in the world...and any radio telescopes can be linked up to form an array with some effort. The real step, I'm guessing, is in the most dry desert in the world. It is compared to a mars-scape.

Edit: Grammar...sometimes I think I need a lobotomy

Lexx!
The first sci-fi series I watched continuously! It was showing on Norway's second government-run television channel, which had just been introduced and had really bad reception in our area. My parents didn't really approve of me watching such a freaky show, so I watched it in half secrecy in my attic bedroom on a 14-inch "portable" color TV older than myself. I had to constantly twiddle the antenna and the analog reception control to get a picture at all, and even then it would often revert to black and white because of the bad signal. I was completely fascinated, and the brain-eating slugs scarred me for life.

I feel old now.

What do you do for work ? (Talks Talk Post)

lurgee says...

Well I wake up anywhere between 7am to 12pm. And do whatever. @2:20 I blast off to be at werk by 3pm., About 18 miles. I werk for a cellular tower antenna manufacturer. I am in the test department testing antennas after they are assembled. A no brainer job and I like it.

Edit: my boss is wearing a "like a boss" tshirt tonight. I though that I should add that.

Edit 2: I also get to blast my musics via eyefone all night.
