USA is a "meat, sugar, alcohol culture". Sweden I would say is coffee, sugar, alcohol.
Cannabis is a huge part of Indian culture is my point. The world is full of people doing amazing feats with cannabis in their bodies.

i can't microwave a frozen pizza while high, let alone do something that requires this much precision.

Is Obama A Keynesian?

NetRunner says...

@blankfist, I'm glad you see fascism in the tea party now.

I'm against them, as I always have been.

I don't see how reasoning with them is possible -- they live in a world that operates on its own facts, and have for years now.

I've tried several times to point out that you and I should be on the same side -- against the tea party -- but usually you've been cheering them on, because they've been calling Obama and Democrats Nazis.

Still, I'll take another ally, even at this late hour.

As for the elitist smugness, think that's all in the eye of the beholder. I think conservatives have always acted out of a sort of ignorant smugness -- that gut "common sense" is always superior to those of us with book learnin' who use big fancy words (like Keynesian).

Personally, I think it's amazing that an ideology that valorizes the elites in our society has somehow painted the ideology of egalitarianism as being somehow "elitist". It's another amazing feat of up-is-downism propaganda.

It's also more of the cult of victimization that fuels fascism at work -- if someone points out that your deeply held preconceptions are based on faulty reasoning or incorrect facts, you can just tell yourself it's another pointy-headed socialist disrespecting you, and when we put those traitors into camps, they'll be made to see the error of their ways...

Nissan GT-R smokes Bugatti Veyron

Seric says...

Upvote for GTR. One day I'll own one....one day..

Also French/Italian?

I mean, yeah I guess 'Bugatti' is an italian make, and it was built in france/named after a french man but it was designed (and owned) by Volkswagen as I'm sure you know. Those Germans deserve a mention :>

I think this deserves some *actionpack and both cars are exercises/amazing feats of *engineering plus I think I heard some wolfmother so - *music.

BBC Horizon - Why Do We Talk? (Aired 11-10-09)

yellowc says...

Watched the whole thing. Pretty interesting stuff, my favourite part was the autistic guy who knew 20 languages and counting. Just makes me think how different this world would be if we all had that honed ability but without the sacrifice of near every other function or a huge investment of time (he was easily picking up words of a new language within 10mins). I guess that applies to many of the things accomplished by some autistic people, what if we all head photographic memory at ease and other such amazing feats of the mind...

I also found it alarming how quickly I found it enticing to perform "The forbidden experiment" of isolating a child from birth with no outside influence for learning speech, to see how it would develop. It is of course impossibly cruel but the intrigue just makes you stop for a moment.

I was thinking about the subject of national achievements the other day. One hundred years ago, people were for the most part not using internal combustion for transportation. In the fifty years hence, amazing advances took place. However, it seems at first glance to have tapered off since the late 60s.

My two cents: First off, we can thank the Cold War for the space race and our landing on the Moon. Second, Mars rovers anyone? That was a pretty fucking amazing feat! Third, IMO, most national (and global) achievements haven't been as outwardly observable as past achievements. For example: the internet. Personal computing. Nanotechnology. Miniaturization of every conceivable electronic device. They are all amazing achievements, but they aren't as sensational as a trip to the moon.

Amazing Ant-Inspired Hexapod Robot Is Creepy As Hell

osama1234 says...

First of all, that completely blew my mind away. I am so impressed.

Some of that though was because of how loosely the term robot i suppose can be used. When i was watching the video i thought it was completely autonomous, but then at the end it showed the remote control.

So it is slightly misleading to call it a robot, as calling it as such had led me to think it was using sensors to detect the pop and the claws control was based on sensors. At the end of the day though, the actuators is the impressive part of this contraption, as it is so fluid and lifelike; the sensors i'm sure this person has enough talent to put on there as well and make it truly a robot.

Regardless, it is an amazing feat of engineering.

Russian - Finnish War [1939 - 1940] (Talvisota - 1989) HD

EDD says...

Don't forget the Finns had the world's greatest sniper of all time Simo Häyhä, the White Death to help crush Soviet troops' morale to new lows.

I'm not Finnish and although the soldiers of my nation achieved some of the most amazing feats in WWI, I have no doubt whatsoever that the story of this war and how Finland drove the Soviet army back is one of the most awe-inspiring in modern history. The Finns literally won due to their ability to use their own land, relief and terrain to their advantage. You just can't top that.

Band of Brothers: Lt. Speirs takes command of Easy Company

EDD says...

The account of Lt. Spiers' run through the German lines and back in Foy is historically and factually accurate, if only somewhat dramatized and emotionally exaggerated. I can't find links to back it up ATM, but I remember researching this episode and reading up on this on several websites.

Also, Winters has stated that Spiers just happened to be the first officer in his sight when the order came to replace Dike and that it had nothing to do with Spiers' reputation.

Seriously fucking amazing feat to accomplish though.

Netrunner hits 500, wins election, goes to jail. In same day (News Talk Post)

EDD says...

Hmmm, hmmm.
I congratulate you on this amazing feat Netrunner, yet I remain suspicious. How is it that you chose the screen name of Net-Runner? It is as if you KNEW beforehand you will outrun everyone in the Sift race. Is mintbbb really your spouse or is she in truth your running-mate in some mischievous attempt to steal an election the votes, huh?

I say we do an Siftofficial recount of all the votes he's received, just in case. I also hereby nominate my humble persona for the title of Chair of Recount Committee of the Sift.
Anybody wanna second that for 5% of his votes?
