Border Collie Disc Caddy

Buttle says...

So you're saying there actually are "disc golf caddies" that carry discs? Because if not, I think that's just a different category, and doesn't necessarily involve any carrying. Except when you give the mulligan signal.

newtboy said:

No, it’s “disk golf”. A separate entity from “golf”.

That’s like asking “is it really tennis if you play it on a table?”. It’s table tennis.
Is it really hockey if it uses air not ice? It’s air hockey.
Is it really a bicycle if it doesn’t move? It’s a stationary bicycle.

Sam Harris on Trump

MilkmanDan says...

I think Sam Harris is awesome, so there was a lot of interesting stuff in there even though it came from before the election.

I agree with everything he said about who Trump is; his motivations (or lack thereof), narcissism, potential psychological issues, etc. Yet I disagree with his threat analysis. I still think that Trump's "balloon flying around randomly" presidency seems like it could easily be better than a Clinton presidency.

Trump will cause some incidental damage with his chaotic randomness. But basically, it will be 4 years (please) of loud noises and flashing lights that mostly goes nowhere. Hillary, with all the baggage and rumors etc. that may not true, is still in general the kind of person that people like Hitchens said she was. She's savvy, subtle, and frankly dangerous. And she's extremely well connected. When Trump randomly bungles his way into some big screw-up, we're going to hear about it. If Hillary weaseled into some dirty back-door stuff that could cause real long-term problems, there's a good chance we'd never find out about it.

Then he mentioned the "Trump vs random US citizen" argument. Jesus, I'd have taken random US citizen in a heartbeat over Trump or Clinton. Hell, I think that would be a fantastic way to call a mulligan and replace every last member of our corrupt, incompetent, and entrenched congress...

John Oliver: Voting

MilkmanDan says...

That "ghost voting" shit is infuriating. We elect these fucks to do *one* thing -- represent us by voting for their constituents interests in the legislature. But instead, apparently they'd rather spend time doing other things, like "entertaining" lobbyists.

We need that rule like I remember Australia (any Aussie sifters confirm that?) having, where the public can vote to "take a mulligan" and completely sweep out every single member of the legislature.

MIT Dropout Starts an Anti-College

MilkmanDan says...

I got an Engineering degree (well, Computer Science, so kinda "Engineering lite") from a traditional 4-year (state) university. And I think it was not a complete waste of my time, but a 50-75% waste.

What I expected / wanted to get out of my degree was a foundation of knowledge and training in order to get a job in my chosen area of specialization (computer programming). My degree gave me that, sorta, but in an incredibly inefficient way. I took a bunch of classes that were in NO WAY relevant. Even classes in my major were very hit or miss; I had ONE class that was centered around working with a team and producing a software project over the course of a year / two semesters that stands out as the only class I think was 100% worthwhile.

Overall, the 4.5 years worth of classes that I took could easily have been condensed into "just the relevant stuff" and fit into a 2 year curriculum. Universities say that they want to produce "well rounded citizens", but they actually want to produce well rounded University coffers.

It IS true that a degree can be a significant barrier to entry for a lot of jobs, so in that sense getting a degree can be "worth it". But I tend to think that in the vast majority of cases that is just employers playing things safe and traditional rather than being a truly necessary requirement for the jobs they want to fill.

High School is the perfect time to "broaden horizons" and expose people to a little bit of everything. I'm all for University-level education trending in a vocational/technical direction like this with much more emphasis on specialization, and where not all degrees/programs require a cookie-cutter 4 years to complete. If you pick the wrong specialization and "waste" 1-2 years learning something that you don't end up actually wanting to do for employment, you could still take a mulligan and start over learning something else in less time than it would take to get a single degree from a 4 year University. More non-traditional students, more specialization, more focus. I wish these guys well and hope that they make some waves.

The Daily Show - Barack Obama extended interview

MilkmanDan says...

That was good.

I might disagree with Obama's near-blanket statement at the end - "government (at large) works better than when I came into office".

That's a hard statement to evaluate because government is a BIG thing. I think that the portion that he is responsible for (Executive branch) definitely works better than it did under Bush (which, to be fair, isn't saying much). The Judicial branch just made a hugely positive wave with the ruling on gay marriage, so I'd tick their "better than before" box also.

But the Legislative branch is a complete f*cking disaster. To be fair (again, on the other side), Obama technically has no control over that. But still, with Congress being such a complete and total epic fail, I take issue with the "government works better than when I came into office" quote.

I don't see how things can improve much, shy of taking a mulligan and replacing every last Senator and Representative.

...Hey, maybe Obama should have let Iran have *1* nuke, so long as they.... /sarcasm

Ash vs Evil Dead - Official Trailer

lucky760 says...

Fuckin A. That's going to be killer.

I loved Evil Dead 2 since I was a lad, but just this year watched it again along with the first and third installments for the first time. It's hilarious that part 2 was effectively just a mulligan, almost an exact re-shoot of the first movie.

Part 1 tried to be just scary. Part 2 was the perfect blend of scary and hilarious. Part 3 just tried to be too funny. This one looks like it's going down that path, but hopefully it'll come off better. It looks great.

I wonder if he also mentions going back in time and all that.

Love Sam Axe. Good stuff.
