Happy Krampus Day! Dang, Austria, you scary!

On the eve of St. Nicholas’s Day in early December, Austrians celebrate the Krampuslauf (Krampus Run or Krampus Day). The Krampus is a devilish companion of St. Nicholas who punishes bad children just as St. Nicholas rewards good ones. Elaborately costumed revellers portray the Krampus as a dark, hairy, cloven-hooved beast with horns, a leering mouth, chains and a switch. Children are invited to throw snowballs at the Krampus.
