Everything Wrong With Ghostbusters (2016)

dannym3141 says...

I've said it before, i'll say it again - all women films are fine, all women remakes are fine, but for god's sake let it not be this tokenistic gesture of bullshit.

This wasn't done because it was a good idea. How do i know? Because a ghostbuster remake at this point wasn't a good idea. If you think otherwise name the 4-person cast, women and/or men, that would make this a good idea.

We're not ready for a ghostbusters remake, but i imagine a lot of shrewd businessmen in hollywood saw a gilt-edged opportunity in the booming equality scene and Ghostbusters scripts were being floated at the time. Not done for any good reason; done for money. And now this will be cited as to why female led films don't succeed.

People so easily forget about the aliens franchise. Potentially one of the biggest franchises. All of them have been female led (Noomi Rapace, Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder) in a genre that is barren of other successful examples, and it was originally written for a man.

So - when decent people see the right actress for the right role performing quality material, you get successful female led films. You don't say "let's remake something but they're all women lol." It's something that natural and happens when those at the top are blind to gender - that's what you need to sort out, but they throw a few breadcrumbs "here, make a boil-in-the-bag all woman film" and we look the other way.

I feel lost in a world of extremes, where equality is that we split up and write ALL WOMEN films and ALL MEN films and never the twain shall meet, and we argue over which are more successful. I guess it's like our evolution through racism all over again; we're using segregation to solve an equality problem? And some who claim to be egalitarians cheer it on!

Red Letter Media Talks About Prometheus on DVD

gwiz665 says...

There was a clear problem in that you didn't care for any characters. The most likable character was the homicidal robot, which is a failure in my book. In the original Aliens, you grow to like Ripley and you like the camaraderie going on in the beginning of the movie, even if most of them were fucktards. The marines in Aliens were also likeable, even if you sorta recognized them as the dickheads from high school - some of them were our hook into the world, ripley, hicks, hudson all good. Even in alien 3, you still ahve ripley to hang on to, even if it's a desolate despairing film. Alien 4 you have Winona Ryder-robot to like, where ripley is more.. well, alienated.

in prometheus, I liked the Captain Janek and in a twisted way Fassbender-bot, because he was played well. All their motivations didn't make all that much sense though. I hated Holloway, hated Shaw, hated Vickers, fucking hated all of them. Gah, it's so irritating, because the universe of it is so interesting! aaargh.

I think there could have been a much better movie with the same source material, I think the concept could be really cool, but it's beyond a simple reedit repair job. The characters need a total rewrite to not be selfish, unlikable fucktards. There needs to be a lot more explanation and more time spent soaking in each of the more important subject matters and not this jump from one scene to the next with no flow and no reason.

I don't know. It seemed like it needed more "epicness". Like you said (or, as I understood you), more time for the viewer to parse the implications of the much bigger picture before they throw up a scene of some slimesnake tickling someone's uvula. Maybe a scene where they just stand around and go "OMFG! We've discovered the greatest discovery in the history of mankind! Oh, shit! That's a fucking alien structure! The first one ever discovered!! This is fucking amazing!!" They just didn't seem too impressed with anything. And I wish they had left the Alien stuff out completely. They didn't need it. There's just a bigger, better story here than the one we've already seen again and yet again in the sequels. Most of the characters did have that ST:TOS red-shirt aura about them, and really served little purpose outside of biting it in creative ways. Could have been better, but I still dug it, and I think the sequel(s) has a chance to be great. I just hope the Engineer homeworld isn't overrun with alien queens or some dumb shit like that.

Opera you didn't know you knew (lucia sextet)

Deano says...

According to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucia_di_Lammermoor#Trivia, it's been used in;

The "Lucia Sextet" (Chi mi frena in tal momento?) was recorded in 1908 by Enrico Caruso, Marcella Sembrich, Antonio Scotti, Marcel Journet, Barbara Severina, and Francesco Daddi, (Victor single-sided 70036) and released at the price of $7.00, earning it the title of "The Seven-Dollar Sextet". The film The Great Caruso incorporates a scene featuring a performance of this sextet.

The "Lucia Sextet" melody is best known to some from its use by the American slapstick comedy team the Three Stooges in their short films Micro-Phonies and Squareheads of the Round Table, sung in the latter with the lyrics "Oh, Elaine, can you come out tonight...." But the melody is used most dramatically in Howard Hawks' gangster classic "Scarface": Tony Camonte (Paul Muni) whistles "Chi mi frena?" in the film's opening sequence, as he guns down a ganglord boss he has been assigned to protect.

It has also been used in Warner Brothers cartoons: Long-Haired Hare, sung by the opera singer (Bugs Bunny's antagonist); Book Revue, sung by the wolf antagonist; and in Back Alley Oproar, sung by a choir full of Sylvesters, the cat.

The "Lucia Sextet" melody also figures in two scenes from the 2006 film The Departed, directed by Martin Scorsese. In one scene, Jack Nicholson's character is shown at a performance of "Lucia di Lammermoor", and the music on the soundtrack is from the sextet. Later in the film, Nicholson's cell phone ringtone is the sextet melody.

The Sextet is also featured during a scene from the 1986 comedy film, The Money Pit.

In the children's book "The Cricket in Times Square," Chester Cricket chirps the tenor part to the "Lucia Sextet" as the encore to his farewell concert, literally stopping traffic in the process.

An aria from the "mad scene," "Il dolce suono" (from the 3rd Act), was re-popularized when it was featured in the film The Fifth Element in a performance by the alien diva Plavalaguna (voiced by Albanian soprano Inva Mula-Tchako and played onscreen by French actress Maïwenn Le Besco). A loose remake of this film version of the song was covered by Russian pop singer Vitas.

The "mad scene" was also used in the first episode of the anime series Gankutsuou (in place of L'Italiana in Algeri which was the opera used in that scene in The Count of Monte Cristo).

The "mad scene" aria, as sung by Inva Mula-Tchako, was used in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent involving the murder of a young violinist by her opera singer mother (who performs the song right after the murder).

The "mad scene" was released as a music video by Russian male soprano Vitas in 2006.

Among other selections from the opera, the "mad scene", "Verranno a te sull'aure", and "Che facesti?" feature prominently in the 1983 Paul Cox film Man of Flowers, especially "Verranno a te sull'aure," which accompanies a striptease in the film's opening scene.

The opera is mentioned in the novels The Count of Monte Cristo, Madame Bovary and Where Angels Fear to Tread and was reputedly one of Tolstoy's favorites.

"Regnava nel silenzio" accompanies the scene in Beetlejuice in which Lydia (Winona Ryder) composes a suicide note.

A portion of the opera is also used in a key scene of the film The Fifth Element, written and directed by Luc Besson.

Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins are usually great in whatever they do, and agreed Keanu Reeves fucked things up with his dodgy performance. In my opinion this film could have been miles better, Winona Ryder was crappy in it too. Having said that, it's still worth watching

Interesting that a woman who has a website that forms its basis on Celebrity Worship is on Jimmy Kimmel saying that she is in favour of knocking celebrities off of their pedestals.

Fuck celebrities.

... especially Winona Ryder and Halle Berry, I'd be all for that.

Star Struck by Star of Homemade Internet Lip Sync Music Video? (Sift Talk Post)

LadyBug says...

long story, but i will *try* to make it short ...

i used to work at this greasy-spoon hamburger joint (just a small shack on the side of the road). it has been in business for over 60yrs and hires high schoolers during the season. clamps (aptly named after the original owners) is on the way to a more affluent part of the scenic country life (in connecticut) and rakes in the business.

one weekday afternoon a red head stops with her young son and nanny in tow. she looks sooooooooooooo familiar, so i give her 'that look' and say, "can i ask you a question?" she quickly responds with, "yes, i am!" i laugh and told her that i had no clue who she was. she replied, "i guess it will remain a mystery" we laughed some more and then she took her food and went to sit down at a picnic table.

i figured she someone in one of the many soap operas i watched at the time ... i had my own apartment senior year and had basic cable (12 channels), so it was soap operas, sitcoms, and my boyfriend's STNG video tape collection.

she came back to get an ice cream for her son and i couldn't resist, "can you just you just tell me your name?" she obliged with, "gates mcfadden" i shrugged and she just smiled and walked away.

moments later it hit me!!!! dr beverly crusher from the star trek enterprise ... i nearly bolted out the door for her autograph before being stopped by the owner. he told me one of the reasons they are so popular is because they treat celebrities like 'normal' people! UGH!!!!

she was walking to her car to leave and i yelled, " goodbye dr beverly crusher!!" she laughed and waved!

that was my most memorable meeting but there have been others that i've just seen around my hometown. i've spoken to kyra sedgewick, oscar de la renta, gloria vanderbilt, the kissingers, dustin hoffman, mia farrow, michael bolton ... i worked for the local answering service in high school so they REALLY weren't talking to me ... more like leaving a message for a client!!! i used to keep their phone numbers ... like i'd EVER call one of them!!! hahahahaha

i've invited adam sandler over for a 'home cooked meal' he filmed mr deed's in my hometown and i met him on the green (center part of town). i had nothing on me but my checkbook so i had him sign that and then gave him a deposit slip and circled my name and addy!!! *slaps forehead* winona ryder is beautiful in person!

anyway .... i said i would try to make it short, but i'm a girl and it didn't work! so there ya go ...
