Lake Oroville Drought, California

newtboy says...

More good news. So much is being pulled from aquifers to make up for and combined with the loss of surface water that the water table is dropping (along with the entire central valley). This means that, as they draw down reservoirs to empty to supply downstream communities with water, much of that water goes underground because the water tables have dropped below river beds, so the rivers cannot retain and transport the water. This is just starting to happen, but is definitely going to have major impacts in the future, causing the majority of California's water transportation system to be unusable.

Time to invest in desalination.

NASA's Curiosity Finds Ancient Streambed on Mars

Without organic matter building up, without lots of water transporting large amounts of sediment, is it possible that it takes muuuuch longer for sedimentary layers to build up on Mars than it does on earth? And if so, could rounding of that size of pebbles still be explained by wind?

I can only imagine how much math went into that design. It actually sounds like a fun problem to solve... why does it have to be practical?

If they polished up the design so that it becomes a little more useful then I could definitely see the fitness crowd enjoying it. It's like a self-powered jet ski... like people who ride bicycles instead of motorcycles.

History is full of impractical devices that turned out to be great fun. Try snow skiing.

The thing is compared to a surf board or bike, you can just get back on it then and there and try again. With this you have to drag it all the way back to the pier to start over. Have fun with that.
I can't imagine this working very well in anything but perfectly calm water as well.
i think i've seen videos of somebody starting it while submerged....hmm, maybe it was something else.
