Finally a Doctor on the News Talking Fucking Sense

greatgooglymoogly says...

If everyone somehow isolates and we get down to only only 10 new cases a day, and we let everyone out, that only resets the clock to February with the addition of a million or so people already infected and immune. Everything goes back to shit in another couple months. People's behavior changing will help slow the spread, but will not prevent it. There's plenty you can do outside the home a safe distance from other people with minimal risk, certainly less than just going to shop for food. It's ridiculous they are shutting down beaches where it's simple to walk 20' away from anybody else. To limit crowds just close down parking spaces.

Antibody tests should allow recovered people back into regular life, but the only way we get a lot of recovered people is to have a lot of sick people first. Keep the elderly and high risk people confined, and let everyone else out with reasonable precautions(no gatherings over 20, etc). The only other alternative is a 6-12 month lockdown and 100% testing, which is simply never going to happen. You would still have to lock down the borders until the rest of the world has it under control too.

Because some states aren't quarantining and interstate travel isn't restricted, you need to stay home 3 weeks AFTER the entire country finally quarantines, otherwise it's all for nothing and the outbreak will restart with a vengeance and that 100000-250000 dead will become 6000000+-.

Top 10 Most Evil Kids in History

dannym3141 says...

So this is just fucking great. I'll tell you, i recognise the kid in the picture and i remember what happened to Jamie Bulger. What a fucking wonderful way to sensationalise it and get a few quid from youtube views.

Just so you know, that young boy was led away from safety and led on a death march through populated areas, crying himself hoarse and scared - no, terrified and desperate and pleading - in a way that only a child can be. He was marched past some 30 odd people and everyone looked away because they thought they were brothers. To his poor little mind, he must have thought that all those strangers were in on it.

Once he had been walked miles away from where he was found to a secluded spot, he was tortured and mutilated, the details of which are harrowing even to simply READ about.

One can only imagine the relentless fear that this poor little kid went through and it brings tears to my eyes to contemplate it. This is something that affected me really strongly as a child, when it happened, and i can't believe that there are people who would use that to make money. Every single penny that they made off this video should be going to the families that suffered.

I hope whoever made money off this fucking video chokes on it and knows that what they've done regardless of their intent is to glorify and profit off some of the most desperate suffering that very few humans will ever experience. Profiting off the misery of a kidnapped, tortured, dead little baby.

By fucking god i hope there is a heaven and i hope Jamie Bulger is there and happy right now. I couldn't even bear to watch the majority of it. I look forward to the day that the bastards who did it are found and killed and i hope it's fucking slow. It makes you want to wipe the human race out and let nature start again. What a truly disgusting video to make and to present.

One lucky truck driver

spawnflagger says...

it's for this situation that truckers in USA who are hauling pipes get a much higher "hazard" pay than those hauling regular loads. Of course they also have reinforced steel in front of the pipes, but its effectiveness depends on the speed of the impact.

he's lucky he didn't die, and could walk/hobble away from the accident, but unlucky otherwise.

Mieders Alpine Coaster - Frustrated Guy Crashes

artician says...

I thought she was right on the tail of the guy ahead of her. It seemed like she was basically connected to his ride for the duration of it.

I accept I could be wrong. I'm not so suspect of people as that, and definitely didn't have that conclusion. If I were to extrapolate on that line of thinking I would still disagree because I'd expect anyone who would have the gall to do that in the first place wouldn't then get off the ride and walk meekly away knowing that the guy who rammed her that hard (and it was hard, regardless of the effect) was going to be stopping just behind her.

All types of people in this world, so could go either way, but I personally think the assumption she's faking it is absurd. The number of people who are that shitty is pretty low, at least statistically and empirically, and I doubt someone like that would enjoy a nice roller-coaster down a hillside in the first place.

newtboy said:

The problem with that theory is that she's faking it. If she were knocked out, like she's pretending to be, she would not be holding her brake on and would be ramming the guy ahead of her the rest of the ride, she's not. She's flopping. (soccer term, not the descriptive term) That said, the tactic worked because she fools the rear-ender into backing off and shutting up. When she gets off, she's just fine (but weeping).

Driver Uses A MATCH To Look Into His Gas Tank.

He could have kept his kid safer and saved the car by not getting out of the car at all, and just driving on.>> ^renatojj:

There's also the issue of the other driver, who's got the shelter value and escape potential of his car, but instead of driving off, decides to take his kid outside, walk away, and abandon the car to a fireball. wtf?
child > car

and he gets to show his kid a cool 'splosion!

Cops arrest journalists in Wisconsin

SDGundamX says...

I simply can't see this video as evidence of the U.S. becoming a police state. There are literally cameras everywhere filming what is happening and no one is arresting the cameramen/women. The officer making the arrest lets the press get incredibly close and he is amazingly calm despite the people all shouting at him and getting in his face. He doesn't yell at the reporter who gets on the elevator with him, he just tells her to get out twice (in a calm but commanding manner) and tries to push her out firmly, but not violently.

All hell breaks loose at 1:42 because the reporter who wrote the post I linked to above grabs a camera away from the assistant who is being arrested and tries to walk away. The cop tries to stop the reporter, but doesn't want to let go of the assistant either, causing the assistant to fall down (looks like an accident to me).

It seems to me it was stupid of the reporter to try to take the camera from the assistant. If I were a cop making an arrest I would probably have the same reaction: I'd be concerned that the suspect just passed off something illegal (possibly drugs or a weapon) to a friend before I'd had a chance to do a proper search. The reporter walked briskly away after getting the camera too, and wouldn't give it back when the cop demanded it, making her behavior seem even more suspicious.

How was the cop supposed to know it was a camera that got passed off? He was busy trying to get the other woman out of the elevator when the hand-off got made and probably didn't even see what was passed. And then the reporter resisted handing over the camera, which is essentially the same as interfering with the arrest since that camera is potentially evidence (until the cop examines it, he doesn't know if it's a real camera or is stuffed with drugs).

So what can we conclude form all this? Mistakes were made all around. Not having credentials on you and visible would be the first mistake made. Not sure what the initial arrest was for, but it seems like that was probably a mistake too. Taking the camera and then trying to leave the scene? Yeah, that was a big mistake. All the reporters getting in the cops face about the arrest was a mistake too--you're there to report the news, not make it. This isn't Syria; these reporters are not going to be tortured for months and "disappeared" afterward. Lots of mistakes here, but I see very little evidence in this video of police overstepping their authority.

Raglan Road sung by Luke Kelly

lampishthing says...

It's called On Raglan Road - it's a poem by Patrick Kavanagh set to the music of the Dawning of the Day.

We had to study this in school :-)

On Raglan Road - Patrick Kavanagh

On Raglan Road on an autumn day I met her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue;
I saw the danger, yet I walked along the enchanted way,
And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day.

On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge
Of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion's pledge,
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay -
O I loved too much and by such and such is happiness thrown away.

I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret sign that's known
To the artists who have known the true gods of sound and stone
And word and tint. I did not stint for I gave her poems to say.
With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May

On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had wooed not as I should a creature made of clay -
When the angel woos the clay he'd lose his wings at the dawn of day.

14 yr old girl Tasered in the Head by Police Chief

Skeeve says...

Wow, I never thought I'd ever come close to agreeing with QM, but I guess there is a first time for everything.

For those of you who think she walked away from the officer, there is a dashcam video of the incident. She was running away from him after he approached her, and he tasered her from behind as she ran into the road.

Still, the cop should have caught up and physically detained her, IMO. I don't know what it is like to be a cop (and I know I wouldn't have the patience for that thankless job), but in the military we often have to follow a clear escalation of force in the situations that call for a less than lethal approach. Peaceful gestures lead to offensive gestures which lead to physical contact which lead to more aggressive physical contact and so on. If the cop had escalated the force properly he would have attempted physical apprehension before tasering her in the back.

PSA: Black Man in an Elevator

direpickle says...

Don't flatter yourselves, different-skinned/bearded people. I'm white and clean-shaven and women still walk faster away from me when it's dark out. Women are afraid of men. It's just prudence when you're in a place that has a high crime rate.

We get notices by email whenever a crime is committed within a block or two of my school's campus. I'd say there's an average of a mugging per week, and 90% of the time it's a group of four or five teens, usually black.

But, shock! Maybe this is because it's a low income area and just happens to be predominantly black. Still, it feeds that subconscious prejudice to see, every single week, that someone was beaten and mugged by "four male black youths."

Russian car crash right in front of a pedestrian

hueco_tanks says...

I keep watching it... and I still can't figure out some of the reactions. I don't know if it would be better if it were clearer so we could tell what is going on... I think I prefer not being able to tell:

1. The main pedestrian at the median walks casually away, and stands within 5 feet of where he was for almost the entire clip, even as the car is flipped back over. He seems to be working at a different speed than everyone else. (wtf!?)
2. As far as I can tell, the pedestrian who narrowly escapes death on the right curb never returns to the scene. (wtf!?)
3. After the crash, some guy turns left into traffic going the wrong way, hops the median, parks, and seems to hang out at his car a half-block away. (wtf!?)
4. The driver at fault (edit... you all know who I mean, probably not at fault, had the green light, but maybe should have looked before proceeding through the intersection) comes out holding his head, and some guy in an orange shirt comes over, talks to him, shuts his passenger side door and runs off. (wtf!?)
5. The white car on the left side pulls to a stop right in the middle of the road instead of pulling to the side, oblivious to the bus behind him trying to pull around. (wtf!?)

Please... add more oddities. This video fascinates me.

Why Congress won't Impeach Bush and Cheney

12354 says...

1. Presidential Directive 51 states that in a time of Emergency... with Emergency being defined solely by the President.. that he takes over all areas of government amongst other things including Federal Local State Tribal Governments etc. It also states that once the President has declared a state of emergency that congress can't even question it for 6 months. They don't enact laws that they don't intend to use. Think about it.

2. There would be no need for American soldiers to fire on American citizens. There are foreign troops and UN troops that would gladly do it if asked i am sure. Russia and china have already stated that the US better not touch Iran... i would argue that with the US military spread out from here to hell and back that a pissed off Russia and China along with Iran could fairly easily have their way with us while the military was scrambling to "defend the country".

3. Halliburton is currently under contract to staff and run detention camps in the US. Under the guise of dealing with the "immigration problem," large concentration camps are under construction around the US. That's where i am sure most of your arsenal harboring Americans will end up.

4. What's clear is that this administration has a deep, profound and uncompromised contempt for democracy, for the rule of law, and for the US Constitution. When George W. Bush went on the record (twice) as saying he has nothing against dictatorship, as long as he can be dictator, it was a clear and present policy statement.

Who really believes this crew will walk quietly away from power? They have the motivation, the money and the method for doing away with the electoral process altogether. So why wouldn't they?
