White House revokes CNN reporters press pass

newtboy says...

What "facts"? Your opinion? That's just, like, your opinion, man.
Edit: Facts that Trump said aren't facts? That's the best indicator today that they are factual.
I'll take the dozens of convictions and guilty pleas based on those facts as proof enough they are true and well vetted. People don't agree to years in prison based on nonsense that's been proven false....especially not people with money like these people have.

As the exalted leaders #1 choice for (mis)information that becomes policy and platform for the right, and part of the right wing triad ministry of truth, you simply can't leave Jones out of any media discussion, particularly one where someone paints the BBC as having an (anti?)American political bias, and not just a bias for reality.

Yes, it's all fine and dandy. Any investigation of an investigation by the subject being investigated (or their proxies) is patently ridiculous and a clear political ploy to satiate your need for corroboration of what you want to believe, fact based or not. They knew they couldn't write the investigation's findings, nor could they accept the truth being made public, the only option left is to discredit the investigation, something they've been trying since before it began. I find it incredibly sad that so many are so thoroughly indoctrinated that you buy that obvious, self serving ploy to discredit the entire FBI and intelligence community in favor of a consummate narcissist and convicted fraud's self serving and baseless stated opinion about himself.
I guess you believe mob bosses who claimed they were framed and are just legitimate businessmen too, tapes and other evidence of them planning crimes and committing them are nothing in the face of their denials, right?

Yes...yes he did say that about central American immigrants....are you just parsing the fact that he didn't specifically say EACH AND EVERY ONE IS A RAPIST, while not acknowledging what he did say...."They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."? Strictly read, he's saying they're all rapists, but some are good people anyway....just like some Neo Nazis are good people in his opinion. You're attempts at rectifying oldthink (rewriting history) only work with people who have no memories. I watched him say it and I can remember yesterday without big brother telling me what to remember.

I can't dive into your paranoia to decipher what you're feeling. If you can't hear "accosted" and gather they likely arrested her aggressively and instead read that as some hidden agenda to.....well, you didn't articulate what the motive would be...., perhaps reading comprehension isn't a strong suit.

ac·cost. /əˈkôst,əˈkäst/ verb
past tense: accosted; past participle: accosted
approach and address (someone) boldly or aggressively.

I disagree with your characterizations. Considering the constant vitriolic, dangerous, demonizing, now blatant terroristic threats from Trump directed at all non right wing propaganda outlets that won't spread his propaganda and stroke his ego, amplified through his right wing minitrue and interpreted by his base that he's trained to hear his dog whistling, and in the face of the same, they display a mature, composed, restrained, unbiased, and inhumanly patient character, including the three you listed.
Yes, they are mature and reasonable adults under constant attack from a serial con man/cult leader and constant threats against their lives, not one Fox host, Jones host, or OAN host is 1/4 as mature, honest, or unbiased as the worst you can mention from CNN.....and no, CNN is not my preferred news source, but they are infinitely better than anything the evil trinity of right wing propaganda produces, including the totally dishonest smear campaign against all news organizations that you are part of now, willingly or not.

That's what the ministry of truth does. They get you to repeat their lies until you believe them enough to be the enemy of anyone still believing fact and reality. It clearly worked.

Btw, still waiting on the names of CNN reporters who have gone on the campaign to stump for the left, like Fox hosts did on the right. You insanely claim CNN is more biased than Fox, you should be able to name at least 4 off hand then.

You can label it whatever makes you sleep better but choosing to ignore facts that don't fit your agenda is silly at best.
Not sure why you keep bringing up Alex Jones...
Do you share Trumps love for him?
The investigation itself has been investigated and don't tell me it is all fine and dandy how they did it or the people involved with it.
Also Trump never called all the folks in the caravans rapists.
You should know that if you actually read what he said and not the way your treasured media bends it.
Just today a topless woman jumped over a security fence to protest Trump in France and CNN reported she was "accosted" by security officials.
I tried to watch the BBC for a while a couple of days ago and can't recall what upset me other than the way they seemed to frame everything
in this weird way.
Bending the facts of stories to fit something.
I have no idea what they would want to be pushing on people.
Do you?
It simply felt like I was being brainwashed to see everything their way.
Not a good feeling but I can't recall the story or stories now they were covering.
I too hope they get rid of Trump as I'm tired of a draft dodger talking about heroes and for many of the same reasons you don't like him.
I just wish the media was more mature about it.
Don Lemmon
Jim Accosta
Chris Cuomo
None of the above are mature.

Myths and Facts About Superintelligent AI

ChaosEngine says...

As I've said before, even if we somehow wind up in a best case scenario of a benevolent superintelligent AI that shares our goals, we're still just pets at that point.

You might love your dog, but you don't let it make decisions for you.

But that's extremely unlikely. Max talks about "letting " the AI decide at one point in the video. The verb "let" implies a degree of control on our part. If we get a superintelligent AI, we won't be "letting" it do anything, any more than apes "let" humans do something. Maybe on a short scale/timeline, an individual ape might force a human to do something (i.e. a gorilla makes a human run away), but in real terms, apes don't really get a say if we decide to do something.

Basically, as soon as we get superintelligent AI* , the world will be unrecognisable.

* I mean a true superintelligent AGI, something that is smarter than us and therefore by definition able to write a better version of itself.

Why Love Is Never As Nice As It Should Be

Jinx says...

Love, love is verb /
Love is a doing word

I'm not sure it should be unconditional though. And Eros is fun sometimes.

shinyblurry said:

Love is an action word; it is something that you do. People today think love is a feeling but what happens when the feeling runs out?

"I'm not in love with you anymore" = I don't feel love for you anymore

This is an inferior type of love which is based on feelings and physical desire. In greek it is called Eros.

There is another type of love called Agape love, which is unconditional love. It means I love you whether I feel it or not, and regardless of whether you return it to me or not.

Eros is selfish love, and Agape is unconditional love. Many marriages have ended because they were based on Eros, and not Agape love.

Learning English: "Ough" is tough to figure out

ulysses1904 says...

I have studied Spanish all my life and am constantly reminded how grateful I am that I didn't have to learn English as a second language. The difference in the details of spelling and pronunciation between the two languages is orders of magnitude apart. On the other hand verbs, nouns and adjectives are less complex in English. I'm still trying to get a grip on the subjunctive tense after all these years.

Hard for me to wrap my mind around this kind of language. How does something like this evolve? Are they more musical than Western languages? Fascinating.

(And yeah, do they lose nouns and not verbs? There is a question to be researched!)

oritteropo said:

Yes, like Chinese (all Chinese dialects are tonal). It's a language where pitch affects the meaning of the word. Jimbo's big bag'o'trivia has an entry on it here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tone_%28linguistics%29

In Cantonese for instance, both a fork and a cup of tea are "cha" but with different tones (tea is tone 4 low falling and fork is tone 1 high falling, I think, and lets just not mention the other cha which is fried). The list (for Cantonese) is:

1 - High Falling
2 - Middle Rising
3 - Middle Level
4 - Low Falling
5 - Low Rising
6 - Low Level

Ah. I wondered. I saw a "news" report about a type of person called a "super recognizer." They have the ability to recognize celebrities from old photos (and probably have other recognizing abilities, too.)

I'm not a super recognizer, but I am a pretty dang good recognizer. I can't see anyone BUT Jack Black in that screen shot.

I'm losing the ability now. Not that I don't know who the people are -- I just can't remember names now!

Interesting factoid -- as you age, you lose the ability to recall nouns. Verbs don't go away. Fascinating. Says something about the evolution of language ot me....

how climate change deniers sound to normal people

harlequinn says...

Oh sorry, I used the word ridicule to describe the piece.... oh wait a minute: ridicule is a verb meaning; to make fun of, poke fun at, make jokes about, etc.

Like I wrote. The meaning of the video is clear. You have written nothing that I didn't already know.

But somehow you don't seem to be able to get over the fact that I didn't address the video's main theme (satire) and instead addressed a side issue that is important (at the very least) to me. People are not obliged to only address a topic's main theme and not side issues. You need to check yourself.

I hope you have an incredibly high IQ and perfect recall of all facts because if you don't, someone might be saying the same thing to you one day. In other words, there is always someone smarter than you, and you're always wrong about something.

You have a good day mate. It's getting a little boring explaining stuff. I might come back to it in a few weeks (or I might not).

ChaosEngine said:

Ok, I'll explain it.

It's a comedic piece, not a lecture on reproductive health.

It doesn't matter if condoms are 97, 80 or 50% effective. They are being used as a stand-in for something that HAS a 97% consensus on its accuracy.

Granted, it's not a completely perfect analogy (they are comparing efficacy to consensus), but it's poetic licence. In other words.....

it's a fucking joke.

As for writing people off, everyone is entitled to make mistakes, but really at this point climate deniers are up there with creationists, homeopaths, and flat earthers. There's only so much slack we can cut them, before we move the fuck on and say "If you believe that shit, you're an idiot"

Surprise! I'm pregnant!

modulous says...

There was a whole host of contraceptive methods that I didn't mention. That some methods are more effective than others doesn't stop the existence of accidental pregnancies. I hope nobody is coming here for contraceptive advice, but if they are I'll thank you for the additional information anyway. I wouldn't recommend a 19 year old male has a vasectomy under most circumstances, though, any more than I would a hysterectomy for a similarly aged woman.

Sex isn't 'designed' for anything at all. It's a verb. It is no more designed than 'driving' is (a reasonable argument may exist that it is less designed than driving). It has many functions, procreation isn't the only one (which is why sex seldom results in pregnancy even when intended (I think its about 0.3% to 1% effective at causing pregnancy per attempt). The analogy is not the thing, the important point is the linguistic parallel rather than the similarity of action. One of a car's purposes, as you hint at, is to collide with things. This is not the norm, but it exists - whether it is for science or entertainment. Also, some people buy cars so that they can crash them for insurance purposes. Thus, one can crash a car deliberately, or by accident. Like a pregnancy. The fact that the car was built in a factory and the body was built through billions of years of evolution is not important.

An accidental pregnancy is a socially useful label used to describe the phenomena when people who have sex get pregnant, though pregnancy was not the intent of their sex. It is in contrast to a planned pregnancy in which the couple intends, as one of the outcomes of the sex, to procreate.

newtboy said:

You forgot vasectomies. They are near 100% effective...but only if you 1)wait after the surgery, because there's still sperm in the system for a while, and 2) go back to the doctor to get tested to be SURE your vas deferens didn't heal together, which happens in a few percent of cases. Once you're sure it worked though, you're safe for life (from pregnancy).

I'm not sure the car analogy works....driving isn't intended to cause 'accidents' like sex is....unless you're a demolition derby driver, then OK, I'm with you.

One of the Best Press Conferences Ever - Marshawn Lynch

kceaton1 says...

I actually thought, due to the timing that i first heard the nickname used, that it might be a reference to an anime called Evangelion 2.0 (or 2.22; as the release dates for everything lined up correctly, or at least I "thought" they did).

But, from what I learned later, he has been called that since his High School days. Although the "Beast Quake" was awesome. Anytime you create a football play awesome enough that you can get the fans riled up enough that an Earthquake Monitoring Station nearby picks it up (as an earthquake) is absolutely awesome and hilarious.

But, everyone is right. Even though he isn't doing anything *sort of* at these interviews, he is actually helping to generate publicity; because these interviews usually end up being far better than the status quo norm, that can cause people to fall asleep while standing at home (because they ask the same question over and over again, just with a different noun and verb...).
