2016 Olympics: What Rio Doesn’t Want The World To See
like payback said, vancouver has been "rich washing" for decades. i've heard some crazy stories from expo 88 era. before the olympics they cracked down on the poor. often ostensibly rounding them up and sending them to the suburbs (this is fairly normal procedure for cops who "catch" binners/panhandlers in richer areas: they "arrest" them, drive them out to the suburbs, and just leave them there).

They did the same thing in China, they did the same thing in Russia. I'm not aware of any 'rich-washing' that was done in Vancouver but there may have been some here. They definitely promised that a lot of the housing they built would be for low-income renters and now the Olympics is over high price tags have been put on the units and they've gone to solely the rich.

The rich washing in Vancouver has been going on for decades. They didn't have to do much.

Didn't they do the same thing in China when they hosted the Olympics?
The Canadian English Accent
Excellent stuff. I've lived in Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa. It's perfect. That Montreal accent is unmistakable to me. And I have friends from Newfoundland and the prairies. Very clearly Canadian.

Project Blue Beam Whale Hologram in School Gymnasium
Yeah, no, a CG whale comped into a shot of a non-responding audience isn't a hologram. The video linked in Gratefulmom's comment is just AR, not a hologram - they're looking at themselves in a video monitor that's got CG animals overlaid on the feed. And the Vancouver Expo video is probably an example of the Pepper's ghost illusion, like the recent "hologram" of 2Pac, rather than actually holographic.
And good call on the "Project Blue Beam" bullshit.
Project Blue Beam Whale Hologram in School Gymnasium
I think like the first comment there said, they're more like projections and overlays, not holograms.
My guess is that most of what we see is either added on top of the live video of the people, not actually projected amongst them, and the other one (in the dark) is like a planetarium movie, 360 surround, maybe even 3D, not hologram.
Now THIS was holographic, and awesome (I saw it in person), and it's a terrible shame that now, 30 years later, we still don't seem to have this technology outside of concerts.....(sorry for the quality of the video)

Ok, tell me what you think of this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CqUYBopWLs I believe you are right, however, it's a pretty cool video..the one I listed here for you to check out has had some controversy over whether it is real or not.

Vancouver - Expo 86 - Part III- GM Holographic Exhibit has been added as a related post - related requested by newtboy.
3D Art - "Superduperperspective" - Patrick Hughes - Birmingh
I've seen this piece or one very much like it at Bau-Xi Gallery in Vancouver and he's right. People do double takes as they walk past it, then start walking back and forth while looking at it with bemused expressions.
I'm not sure about the video not doing the painting justice. Depth perception would probably take quite a bit away from the effect.
Covering up 100 Years of Canadian Beauty
Scarfs are for people from Toronto and Vancouver who really have no f*#king clue how to dress for Winter. A good lined hood and a touque will do just fine, and if it dips below -30c haul out the dickie.
One can easily survive almost any Southern Canadian Winter (the majority of our population lives within 100km of the US border) with a coat like this:

Once you go North you may have to re-gear.

Oh yeah...sorry.

You've reminded me of something hilarious from the expo, but I can't find a picture of it. There was a 2D sculpture of a Canadian Mountie, I think near the roller coaster, that totally had a huge boner! It was really the end of the arm, but the way it was made the elbow is in back, but in front was just a little triangle just below waist level. It was too funny, and obviously not intentional. Oh, the things you notice when you're 16.

Freddie Mercury's Isolated Vocals From We Are The Champions
September 1982, Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver. One of my favourite concerts, awesome showman. Freddie threw his mic stick into the audience at the end and beaned some poor girl.

Movies where Vancouver played itself:
That Cold Day in the Park
Russian Roulette
Shoot to Kill
Blockbusters all.
Vancouver never plays itself
He makes a point that hollywood cinema never uses Vancouver's many iconic and recognizable views, as that would make it look recognizably not anytown USA. It's a pity as Vancouver is a very photogenic town.
