This won't work for me personally with a wife and kids, but I'm impressed by the idea. I think the concept was born out of the desperate need for affordable housing in metropolitan Vancouver BC, where housing prices put even the most modest house far out of reach for most families.

If shipping companies such as Maersk were required to uphold proper standards for the deconstruction/decommissioning of cargo vessels they own, they'd outsource it and charter ships from third parties who, in return, cannot be held accountable.

You can see it already in the cases of the Maersk Vancouver, the Maersk Valletta and the Maersk Vigo. Those three were chartered by Maersk, and when the contract ran out while they were still at sea, the ship-owner bounced. Poor fuckers aboard were left to their own devices.

I was once in a pub overlooking the main harbour of Vancouver in Washington State. A herd(?) of sealions were on their sides in the middle of the harbour, sunning themselves. I caught a glimpse of orca fins at the mouth of the harbour slipping below the water's surface. I knew what was about to happen.
Suddenly the orcas came up out of the water from below the sea lions catching them completely unaware. As pub patrons gasped in shock and awe, there were sea lions screaming and swimming like hell for the shoreline as the whales ripped into them. It was simultaneously horrifying and mesmerizing...

I've lived in Quesnel for quite a few years as well as Vancouver, My wife lived in Kamloops as do several of my friends. Surprisingly, yes, even Quesnel, trucks it's snow out of the downtown core, (smallish town that it is.) They get a lot of snow there which stays and builds up all winter, trucking it out is the only way to remove it from city streets without plowing it up onto the downtown sidewalks

In Kelowna, they use this method to clear all the snow from the downtown areas. I've also seen this method used in Kamloops, Quesnel and as for north as Prince George. I also know for a fact that this method is used in the Lower mainland (aka Vancouver) in many areas.
I know snow melts fast right downtown Vancouver, but in the outlaying areas and on the hills where snow doesn't melt so fast, this is the best choice in snow removal since they can't just push the snow up on sidewalks in downtown areas.

Hmm, well in Western Canada we have a different approach. In Calgary they just ignore it, and here in Vancouver we just huddle up in our warm jammies sipping cocoa until it goes away.

an amazing franchise, except for Universe. loved it.
space battle wise, ds9 won. but not by too much. ds9 had 3 to 4 times the average budget per episode any episode in this franchise did.

the sg-1 movie "Ark of Truth" had a 7 million dollar budget. That was about on par for one single episode of ds9. the sfx people at sg-1 in Vancouver did an amazing job for this show, Atlantis and I guess Universe. Still, I hated Universe.

From a fellow Halifax / Dartmouth native who also recently visited Vancouver and Vancouver Island, I feel your pain. Although, I'm now in North Carolina rather than China, even this relatively small geographic hop makes me feel out of place at times.

Parties aside, why do people believe anything politicians say when they're running for office? There are plenty of people I've supported in the past, and I knew their position on issues, but I never considered them to be committed. And now that I'm remembering, I'm not sure I ever even make that accusation of people I don't support.

EXAMPLE:

Where I'm from in Vancouver, WA, we've been trying to build a new bridge across the Columbia river. It's a pretty necessary action considering the age of the old bridge and the amount of traffic on I5 that crosses it.

Now here's the thing: In the last election the "good-old-boy" mayor, Royce Pollard, explained to people that bridges really aren't built in America these days without at least considering tolls. This became a huge issue in the run up to the election. So his main opponent, Tim Leavitt, simply ran on the platform that he would make sure no one ever paid tolls for the new bridge, ever. Now, a reasonable, rational person might have realized immediately what he was doing, but voters where I'm from (and pretty much everywhere else) tend not to be reasonable and rational about anything.

So, after Tim was elected the new mayor of Vancouver, can you guess what his first "epiphany" was?

And can you really fault him for such a strategy? People will say, "oh, well he'll never get elected in this town again." But he doesn't really have to be, because his next stop is probably senator, if he's lucky. And along the way, if anyone brings it up, he'll just say "oh, well I was young and naive" and you know what?: People will believe him.

It's our fault that politics works this way.

When the Olympic torch went through Canada for the Winter Games in Vancouver a couple years ago, there were a few athletes--who worked their asses of and trained really hard for the honour of carrying the torch--followed by about fifty cops in riot gear at all times. Seriously, WTH‽
