Warcraft Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

Meh, really don't care what you think; it still looks like shit.

I didn't need to see twilight to know it was bollocks and so far, there's nothing here that even vaguely interests me. Maybe when it comes out and other people whose job it is to sit through this garbage give it a good review, I might change my mind, but until then I will retain a healthy dose of cynicism.

mentality said:

No. You know nothing about the movie. Give the man a chance before shitting all over his work before it's even out. It's disrespectful and condescending, especially since during interviews Duncan seems genuinely enthusiastic and happy about this movie.

Once the movie comes out and it's proven to be bad, then criticize away, say it's a waste of Duncan's talents, moan about how low he has sunk, whatever is deserved. I may even join you. But until then, by saying such shit, you're just acting like a cynical hater over the internet.

Matthew, We're Going to Play The Sticker Game

Asmo jokingly says...

I am vaguely disappointed that this didn't end up with the Irish guy resting on his porch in the twilight, a fine whiskey in one hand and a pipe in the other, as Matthew cries himself to sleep in his brand new gimp cage...

GameSoundCon 2010: "Introduction to Game Audio"

artician says...

Yay! I've been telling people for years we lived through a really unique period in music history with game soundtracks. We're kind of in the twilight of that now, but it brought us a lot of really oddball and interesting experimental music and new genre's (ish) along the way.

David Letterman's Final Top Ten List

poolcleaner says...

Different styles. Dave is the straight man, Conan is a goof. Not sure how to compare them, though I do enjoy Conan's show more, as it's wackier. But I think that's mostly personal preference, rather than an objective comparison.

Also, what's wrong with sleeping around with someone like your daughter? Society has been wrong about a lot of things and the whole genetic offspring thing is pretty moot with contraceptives. I don't want to have child with my wife, so why would someone impregnate their daughter? Old Boy ending. Wow, that's fucked up. Or is it?

Creating a twilight zone for humans is SO easy. You just take a flimsy idea that has a misconstrued connotation for the continuation of society and/or the species, and then you disagree with it. It's so simple too! Tastes just like candy.

Lawdeedaw said:

Conan was always funnier. He didn't care about ratings or sleep around with someone who could (might be) his daughter, lol.

Sundays -- another dark sci-fi film to get a movie deal

RFlagg says...

While the obvious comparison is Matrix, there is also some Dark City as well... and going back even further in time to a Twilight Zone episode called A Matter of Minutes where time is built one minute at a time... it explained why one minute something is one spot, not there, but when you recheck, there again, the builders of time simply forgot to put it back for the one minute. (That episode was based on Theodore Sturgeon's Yesterday Was Monday and duplicated somewhat in Stephen King's Langoliers). Here the problems end up errors that get duplicated and copy errors grow over time...

The Kickstarter description sounds a bit more in depth than the short here... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1374452173/sundays-a-film-about-our-future/description

The Song of Eärendil

gorillaman says...

Eärendil was a mariner
that tarried in Arvernien;
he built a boat of timber felled
in Nimbrethil to journey in;
her sails he wove of silver fair,
of silver were her lanterns made,
her prow was fashioned like a swan,
and light upon her banners laid.

In panoply of ancient kings,
in chainéd rings he armoured him;
his shining shield was scored with runes
to ward all wounds and harm from him;
his bow was made of dragon-horn,
his arrows shorn of ebony,
of silver was his habergeon,
his scabbard of chalcedony;
his sword of steel was valiant,
of adamant his helmet tall,
an eagle-plume upon his crest,
upon his breast an emerald.

Beneath the Moon and under star
he wandered far from northern strands,
bewildered on enchanted ways
beyond the days of mortal lands.
From gnashing of the Narrow Ice
where shadow lies on frozen hills,
from nether heats and burning waste
he turned in haste, and roving still
on starless waters far astray
at last he came to Night of Naught,
and passed, and never sight he saw
of shining shore nor light he sought.
The winds of wrath came driving him,
and blindly in the foam he fled
from west to east and errandless,
unheralded he homeward sped.

There flying Elwing came to him,
and flame was in the darkness lit;
more bright than light of diamond
the fire upon her carcanet.
The Silmaril she bound on him
and crowned him with the living light
and dauntless then with burning brow
he turned his prow; and in the night
from Otherworld beyond the Sea
there strong and free a storm arose,
a wind of power in Tarmenel;
by paths that seldom mortal goes
his boat it bore with biting breath
as might of death across the grey
and long-forsaken seas distressed:
from east to west he passed away.

Through Evernight he back was borne
on black and roaring waves that ran
o'er leagues unlit and foundered shores
that drowned before the Days began,
until he heard on strands of pearl
where ends the world the music long,
where ever-foaming billows roll
the yellow gold and jewels wan.
He saw the Mountain silent rise
where twilight lies upon the knees
of Valinor, and Eldamar
beheld afar beyond the seas.
A wanderer escaped from night
to haven white he came at last,
to Elvenhome the green and fair
where keen the air, where pale as glass
beneath the Hill of Ilmarin
a-glimmer in a valley sheer
the lamplit towers of Tirion
are mirrored on the Shadowmere.

He tarried there from errantry,
and melodies they taught to him,
and sages old him marvels told,
and harps of gold they brought to him.
They clothed him then in elven-white,
and seven lights before him sent,
as through the Calacirian
to hidden land forlorn he went.
He came unto the timeless halls
where shining fall the countless years,
and endless reigns the Elder King
in Ilmarin on Mountain sheer;
and words unheard were spoken then
of folk of Men and Elven-kin,
beyond the world were visions showed
forbid to those that dwell therein.

A ship then new they built for him
of mithril and of elven-glass
with shining prow; no shaven oar
nor sail she bore on silver mast:
the Silmaril as lantern light
and banner bright with living flame
to gleam thereon by Elbereth
herself was set, who thither came
and wings immortal made for him,
and laid on him undying doom,
to sail the shoreless skies and come
behind the Sun and light of Moon.

From Evereven's lofty hills
where softly silver fountains fall
his wings him bore, a wandering light,
beyond the mighty Mountain Wall.
From World's End then he turned away,
and yearned again to find afar
his home through shadow journeying,
and burning as an island star
on high above the mists he came,
a distant flame before the Sun,
a wonder ere the waking dawn
where grey the Norland waters run.

And over Middle-earth he passed
and heard at last the weeping sore
of women and of elven-maids
in Elder Days, in years of yore.
But on him mighty doom was laid,
till Moon should fade, an orbéd star
to pass, and tarry never more
on Hither Shores where mortals are;
for ever still a herald on
an errand that should never rest
to bear his shining lamp afar,
the Flammifer of Westernesse.

Rod Serling - How Censorship Led to The Twilight Zone (1959)

I love where Mike Wallace suggests that The Twilight Zone isn't important for television (10:50 or so). Talk about not picking your moments.

Embedded Racism for little girls. Thanks, Corporate America!

bareboards2 says...

Kind of. It's hard to know. You are assuming rationality on the part of the business people.

My evidence? The Bechtel Test for the movies. Despite women being 1/2 the population, the moviemakers ignored that audience for decades as they chased what seemed like a better bet -- males from the age of 18-35, or whatever the range of ages is.

Despite the evidence of quality movies about women doing well at the box office, the "rational" business deciders kept saying - oh, that movie that just did well is the exception.

As the exceptions mounted up, FINALLY they are beginning to pay attention. Even then, it was pushed by book sales, you know? Hunger Games. Twilight.

Surely you wouldn't argue that sexism has been absent from the movie theaters all these years?

It may seem like a stretch to make this analogy, but I don't think it is. The blindness of those in charge is LEGION.

Racism can be subtle. The toymakers don't have to saying -- I don't want to make no n****r baby dolls for them to be twisted by the subtle racist stance that little black kids don't read.

I agree with you. It isn't evil.

It is "just" subtle racism that affects little girls standing in a toy aisle.

AeroMechanical said:

I have a feeling this is one of those things that is perhaps not evil in itself but really just a symptom of the more fundamental problems. Either way, I doubt it had anything to do with the company having some sort of racist agenda.

If I had to guess at a reason, I would say they based their production schedule on previously collected statistics. Those may well have shown that producing deluxe black dolls wouldn't be a good return on their investment and so they didn't. If that's the case, that's fine, and exactly what you'd expect of them in that situation. Their job is to make money, not right society's wrongs.

Ex Machina Trailer

A restored WWII fighter with operational machine guns

hglewis says...

Enjoyed seeing this video as many years ago I used to work on the P-51 in the Air Force Reserve. this brought back a lot of memories. I recall seeing Twilight Tear 463864 out at the Gathering of the Mustangs in Sept 2007 and was attracted to it as at that time it appeared as it been really used. Most of the others appeared fresh off the production line - pretty, but actually too pretty and that isn't the way it is supposed to look - in my view. The owner at that time was Stephen Gray. Is he still the owner?? In this video the aircraft also appears to have undergone some additional restoration - is that so?? If so, is there any other write-ups on the restoration?? Are there any other videos of Twilight Tear available?? Where is Twilight Tear now based?? Thanks for any additional info.

Movie Theater Etiquette

ChaosEngine says...

Regarding babies: in NZ they have special "Mums and Bubs" showings so you can see a movie with all the other screaming brats adorable bundles of cuteness. If you have a newborn child that you can't leave alone for a few hours, but you still absolutely must go to the cinema... bring it to one of those showings.

Also, none of these rules apply to showings of Twilight, since it's impossible to make that experience any worse
