It's interesting---against the United States Navy's 3rd Fleet, Japan's attempts to to use islands to hold a perimeter against the United States in WWII, while certainly causing the issue to be in doubt from time to time, ended up stranding and wasting more resources than not.

Not that we'd ever get to a hot war except through miscalculation and bad judgement---but defending each of those "islands" against a full strike might get tricky.

Considering that just walking backwards under no duress on the edge of a busy freeway could be tricky, doing so while overflowing with adrenaline and a potential threat continuing to advance on you... yeah, it's not like taking a nice leisurely stroll.

The most important question to answer your suggested solutions is: what happens next?

The problem is there's no answer to the question because no one knows what might or might not happen. Again, cops can't put themselves into a position where they have no idea what their next move might be because they're yielding to the potential threat in front of them and handing them the power to control the situation.

The really tricky part about all this is that, though the wages and conditions are frequently horrible, the workers there do at least have jobs and that makes them much better off then they would likely be otherwise. You don't frequently see reporters asking the workers "Are you glad you have this job?" With the exception of the rare cases of actual forced labor, they are free to quit. They can't, though, because the alternative is worse.

It's not really individual western consumers fault that this is the situation, nor even the global corporations commissioning the work, nor the local factory owners. We are all under the pressure of capitalism. If the factory owner decides to install fire extinguishers or whatever or increase his workers' wages, the contract will go to another factory owner who didn't. If the corporations insist on only doing business with factory owners like the former, one of their competitors will opt for the latter and put them out of business. If we as consumers decide to only purchase from companies who treat their employees well, we will have to buy less and there will be fewer manufacturing jobs in the third world, and the people will be out of work.

There is no solution. Capitalism and overpopulation are at the root of all this, but the alternatives to capitalism have all proven to be even worse so far and overpopulation may well be insoluble.

Aw. Now I'm all depressed. Still. Bad as things look, in most ways they're better on the whole then they were in previous centuries. True, the population continues to grow exponentially, but literacy and education are on the rise worldwide too, and hopefully they will hold the key.

There was an interview with Charlie Cox, the lead actor, on Slashfilm today. He's also saying it's actually one shot. I mean, I guess everyone involved could be lying, but why? It's impressive either way.

Charlie Cox: It was incredible. It was as a special day as it was to as the scene has turned out. We dedicated our whole day to it. The first half of the day was just the camera movements. And then we got into, it was as you know it’s one take, so we had to get everything right. Each attempt that we had at it. And it’s incredibly tricky because it’s not like a long tracking shot with two people speaking, it’s a long tracking shot with people punching. And if one punch doesn’t land, it no longer works. It ceases to work as a scene. So I think we did it 12 times. I think three of them we made it all the way through to the end. And one of them was the one in the show, which is kind of almost flawless. I mean, it’s very hard to pick holes in that.

Yeah, those episodes. I saw them over the air (OTA) with an antenna. CBS was tricky in making them HD (all they did was cropped so it looked like they were wide screen and in HD). Are all episodes in colors now? I'd love to rewatch the classics in colos.

Carter provided leadership in a responsible direction, but idiots desired placation rather than leadership and didn't follow. Regan placated his base, and we nearly had a depression. Carter started us on a non-interventionist foreign policy, because he personally understood the short and long term repercussions of intervening, now we've shit in their pot so hard and long that we CAN'T just go hands off anymore, we've already created our enemy. That said, it's like a junkie going cold turkey, it hurts them, may kill them, but if they survive they have a chance of life, if they don't stop, they die soon anyway. If we could find a good foreign policy methadone, we should use it at every turn and start worrying about us, IMO. If we had not installed our leaders and otherwise interfered in the first place, everyone would be better off, but that ship has sailed (in many cases because we didn't follow Carter's suggestion to stay out, I might add).

I read a really great explanation of n-dimensional space a while ago... trying to find it but the basics were:

If I have a point, that has 0 dimensions (note: not a point on a plane, just a dot).

if that point position changes, I have 1 dimension (a line)
if the line position changes, I have 2 dimensions (a square)
if the plane position changes, I have 3 dimensions (a cube)

Easy so far right? but if I take a view of time, then that cube (in fact, all of 3 dimensional space) is a dot again.

if the cube exist for 10 seconds, it has moved through time. Now we have a line in four-dimensional space.

Now here's where it gets tricky. Let's go back to the point and the line.
When we have 1 dimension, I can move the point along a line, but I cannot change the line. Think of it like a train on a single track. It can go back and forth, but the track doesn't change. If I want to change where the train goes, I need to move the track.

Same with the line. To move a line I need two dimensions.

And same with time. To change time, we need FIVE dimensions. With 4 you can only go along the time line (hell, we can only go one way). But if you want to change time, then time must be on a plane... a 5th dimension.

Well, I would say the important difference is whether their decision was based on statistics and decent market analysis, or whether it was just somebody's assumption. It certainly must be tricky when you have a line of products, the different models of which are specifically intended for a particular race. Then you have to look at the demographics of each race separately. You need racially divided focus groups and so on. Obviously, I don't know their particular story, but I wouldn't be quick to judge the company. Though it would be nice, capitalism doesn't generally allow companies to be fair and just for its own sake. If they're stuck with a quarter million unsold deluxe black dolls in their warehouse after christmas, some other less just company will eat their lunch. The free market isn't going to solve racism.

This situation is a nice, simple but poignant illustration of the effects of chronic systemic racism, but I wouldn't go looking for any causes of it here.

Yeah there are slap bands out there, but they don't work like this is presented to work. The arms would have to bend in multiple dimensions, and then straighten out and be able to provide a stable flying platform. The closest thing I think of for doing something like that is the "bendy" character toys where the metal wire is co-molded inside the body. That is a very heavy solution.
I misspoke on the 2" square, it is 2" x 2", so 4" square. I'm not sure that I agree that theirs is 6" x 3", but even if it is that would mean that the prop size would have to be about 1.25" and that doesn't work for a 6" x 3" vehicle. There isn't enough thrust and the motors at that size don't provide enough RPM's for that kind of weight.
On the electronic side, they show it connecting to a smart phone with video feedback. That means you have to have bluetooth at least, or a 5.4ghz video system if you want more than 30' range. or it has to have a Wifi TX on it. All of those thing require power. Sure it could analyze the video signal to determine subject matter, and provide guidance but you have some very serious issues there. If you do it on board it requires some processor power (More drain), if you do it on the smart phone app it will create lag.
Your phone has over 1,000 mAh in it (1440 in Iphone 5), that is a TON (4-10x) more than what this thing would have. Battery technology may be a big research project right now, but there isn't anything on the horizon that will get them to where they need to be. Most of the tech research is in sub 1C rated batteries for things like full size cars. Something like this needs a 10C rating minimum if not a 20C rating. Unfortunately most of the upcoming technology can not handle drains that fast. Things tend to go "Boom!". When you do something small, and even 6" x 3" is small, you have very serious power vs weight issues. It all comes down to issues of power density, and nothing exists today that will give it to them as they would need..

So right now these guys need to figure out:
1) A new light weight material that can lock rigid but also bend as needed in multiple directions.
2) A new battery technology that allows them to get the power they need, for a 6 axis gyro, 4 motors, control board,a RX, a HD camera and some sort of VTX while reducing weight. How long it powers all of that would be open, but if it is under 10 minutes I think people would be a little disgruntled. Right now people are wanting the video quads to get about 30-45 minutes of flight time on the 5200+mAh batteries.
3) Write code that allows them to analyze video in real time so as to provide object tracking and avoidance without lag while capable of running on a smartphone. It would also need to return to home when the battery runs low. That would be a little tricky on a cliff face, or if you are riding a bike through a forest. Another issue is that they tilt the camera down, they don't say if this is actuated, or done by hand, but it could lead to serious issues with programming object avoidance if you can't see anything above you.
4) Since they show the image as HD on the phone screen, they would also need to come up with a new way to broadcast HD video wirelessly. Right now that system costs $40K and is rather large.

All in all it is a dream product that people are going to get suckered into funding it. Some tech may come out of it that could be monetized, but I don't see the item coming out in this format, at least not in the next 3-5 years. You'd be better off going with AirDog.

I was really surprised to read they have a minimum controlling speed of only 45mph. Perfect for tricky approaches I guess.

My point is that even with regulation, alcohol and cigarettes are causing plenty of harm to society. Check the statistics for drunk driving incidents and health issues caused by smoking. If alcohol and cigarettes were banned, they would be harder to obtain and therefore the harm they cause would be decreased.

Conversely, if you legalize hard drugs like cocaine and heroin (which are scientifically proven to be detrimental to your health and livelihood in general), the usage of said drugs and their destructive effects will only increase. Marijuana is irrelevant to this argument, as it isn't addictive and its effects aren't harmful. If you only want to legalize marijuana and not heroin, cocaine, PCP, meth, LSD, etc, I'm in full agreement.

Regulation will never be completely effective, as people will often ignore laws if they really want something (see the current drug situation). But by banning something, you at least make it slightly harder to obtain. It's a tricky situation with no perfect solution. By banning something, you are empowering the criminals who can supply it. But by making something legal and easily obtained, you are also promoting its use. Sure, the government makes a lot of money from liquor and cigarette taxes but those two products have ruined many lives in the process.

Ironic to describe a place that has no natural light as brilliant. Wish they would've shown how people get in and out of there. Seems tricky logistically.
