But it was..

"Tuesday marked Rahm's 26th birthday and he decided to celebrate by taking part in a long-time Masters tradition of dropping a ball down and trying to skip it across the pond across the short par-3." -Sports Illustrated

Republicans in 2018 Post-Midterm Elections

newtboy says...

Frothing at the mouth and hyperbole? Hardly. Are you miffed I called you out on spreading false accusations designed to invalidate an election result or something? Can you give one example?

More damage than Trump can do in two months?! Now who's hyperbolic? Please.

250000+- of us haven't survived 46 months. Over 1 million more have been utterly devastated physically and financially, many permanently.

Trump threw tradition out the window, not America. We are itching to get back to some traditional civility, rationality, and sanity.

No, there's 4 years of evidence indicating most republicans up to and including Moscow Mitch and Barr will support him until he fires or turns on them no matter what. The best we can hope for there is the system still being stronger than one flailing party, but it's certainly not as strong as it was 4 years ago.

Ok, how about zero chance he'll graciously concede or accept that he lost, he might concede that he's been cheated out of winning, but that's not a concession it's an accusation.

Where have you heard that before? Don't say Gore, he never said that although it was nearly true.

He will leave, it might be kicking and screaming like he said he would. It could conceivably be in the back of a cop car.

Frothing at the mouth hyperbole like that will do more damage than Trump can manage in two more months. The country has survived 46 months, it can manage another two. I don't think a single state has certified their election totals. Sure, it's tradition to accelerate the process, but Trump has thrown all tradition out the window, so why make a big deal this time? There is zero evidence to believe anyone with power that matters will support him if the court challenges do not go his way. Calm down and wait a month and this will pretty much be over. I think your notion of "zero chance the president will concede" will be proven wrong by January. He may say the election was stolen for the next four years(Where have I heard that before?) but he will leave the White House on Marine One.

In reality, there's no other choice since there's zero chance the current president will concede or cooperate with a smooth transition.

Once there's no chance remaining votes uncounted or contested could sway the election, a point we are well past, any challenges are academic and couldn't change results, so there's no reason to refuse to acknowledge that fact, especially when it's spurring right wing terrorists to act and dividing the nation, another point we past days ago. The obstinance is harmful to the nation and our institutions, like Trump is trying to burn the government down on his way out the door. No democrat has ever done this in similar circumstances. There's a theory that he's only doing it to bilk his followers out of more money towards his "legal defense fund" that really goes to pay off campaign debt and directly into his pockets with a small portion paying lawyers like Giuliani to lose cases. He's millions in debt there too, and it becomes his personal debt when he's out of office....with near a billion due next year, he needs every penny he can con them out of.

Normally the clear winner would be being brought up to speed on things like covid response and international relationships even if they weren't declared the official winner yet. This time, with a petulant toddler throwing a tantrum for the next 2+ months, that might not help, because there's no telling what damage he might do before then. Biden is just making his own plans instead, preparing to start work day one no matter what dumpster fires Trump sets. That said, this obstinate denial of the results and sewing division, making up and repeating baseless charges to discredit the election (looking at you) have real world disastrous consequences and weakens the state of the union. It's clear the plan was to rely on the Trump appointed judges to rubber stamp the baseless claims and hand him a win. So far it hasn't worked, but it could. That's why we should care about the dozens of frivolous lawsuits, if his judges decide to be the lackeys he expects them to be, they could actually steal the election in court....but it would spark nationwide unrest if not insurgency.

The unbearable lightness of being president.

vil says...

No, no bets, thank you. I thought this was a shining example of why Trump being president should bother people. He really is stupid and obnoxious and uneducated to that level.

I have a vague memory of 2016 Trump boasting that he could be very "presidential", was very clever, and had "the best words". What has that come to? This video basically.

Frankly at that time I was still convinced Obama was a puppet - a black intellectual fullfilling the role that a party needed fulfilled, a token black president. Retrospectively he was (is) a very intelligent, eloquent person excercising extreme self-control in the face of trolls like Bob. He was constantly walking a tightrope of trying to rebuff idiots without insulting them. And tried to promote some reasonable policies.

Trump could not summon the effort to self control, but mainly he does not understand why he should restrain himself. He is like a travesty show performer, as long as he is billed in this performance as "president" he can do anything, no matter how stupid, and there will be people cheering.

What intrigues me is that in the US tradition past presidents are given a "respected" status for life. Should be fun.

How One Gameplay Decision Changed Diablo Forever

No surprise here, it's its claim to fame of real-time action from the traditional turn-based RPG mechanism. Just like the Red Alert, Warcraft of its era.

Irish Taxi Man's view of same sex marriage

WmGn says...

One of the ways in which Martin Luther broke from the Catholic church was by not seeing marriage as sacramental: he wanted to be able to acknowledge marriage between non-Christians rather than just marriage between Christians. Thus, from the perspective of Protestant theology, it's not clear that the church should have much to do with marriage. (This was most succinctly summarised for me thus: have a civil wedding, and then come back to the church for potato salad and a party.)

What about the civil arrangement, then? For me, the clearest argument for a non-paternalistic state granting some people preferable treatment (e.g. untaxed inheritance, etc.) is that those people are reducing the burden on the state somehow. In the 'traditional marriage', they do this partly by providing (on average) a more stable environment in which to raise children (thus, raising somehow more productive - on average - citizens for the state), and partly by caring for each other in their old age (thus, saving the state costs). From this point of view, whether or not they have sex, on whatever basis, with each other is irrelevant: an adult son living with and caring for his elderly mother is saving the state in the same way that an wife caring for her husband is. Thus, when France introduced its 'pacte civil', I thought that they missed the opportunity to get right out of the bedroom.

Four Sisters And A Brother Riddle

No, no no... this is like the Doctor's husband riddle. Nobody said this was a traditional family? What if the daughters are adopted? What if they're from each from previous marriages? The answer is between 6 and 10.

I may be missing what you're seeing, but it looks legit to me. The cymbals and some of the pads on that side are electronic too. They can also be configured to play different samples on successive hits (or velocities) to further muddle things.

Thing that struck my attention was a couple times he switched from matched to traditional grip and back.

But you can hear the sounds I mean be triggered starting at about 5:00 as he hits the midi-zylophone thing, then the sound is triggered again at 5:08 when he clearly didn't play them and a few times after that. Perhaps what I'm hearing isn't supposed to be percussion and is just the backup music synching with the percussion....but there are definitely kettle drum and other percussion sounds happening when he isn't hitting any drum.

Demonstrating Quantum Supremacy

moonsammy says...

...Maybe? It would absolutely annihilate at something like chess, or Go. I have a hard time imaging a good use case for having it actually run a video game, but I'm guessing few people working on early traditional computers could've envisioned any of the delightful diversions we now take as a given. Probably when I'm 80 kids will be playing quantum Minecraft in a layered omniverse of worlds, where removing a block in one world has consequences in nearby dimensions, with chaos theory realistically modeled and incorporated.

Some complex tasks a QC would absolutely rock at however. Feed it a long list of employees, hours of availability, and coverage requirements, and it should spit out a 100% optimum schedule immediately. Air traffic controllers (particularly at large hub airports) would likely find it helpful in coordinating flight plans. Logistics for manufacturing, shipping, etc. The downside is that encryption will likely be utterly fucked for a while, as a quantum computer with a sufficient number of qubits could try all possible options at once. So it'll be interesting, but we're still 10+ years from any sort of commercial products, and they'll be like the computers of the 60s: huge and expensive, big iron for custom purposes. Or at least that's my semi-informed guess, I ain't no technoprophet.

Someone who really wants to get involved in bleeding-edge tech would do well to dive into this field. Writing the algorithms needed to run a task on a QC requires a completely different mindset than programming a traditional computer. I don't think people with years of experience with current programming methodologies would adapt well. At best they'd be nearly starting from scratch, at worst they'd have to work to un-learn what they already know.
