Is Most Published Research Wrong?

"As flawed as our science may be, it is far and away more reliable than any other way of 'knowing' that we have."

I'm going to be polite and assume you have narcolepsy and just happen to fall asleep during the bits that challenge your own viewpoint.

The theory about global warming may yet prove to be untrue - that i cannot deny; some other as yet unknown factor may be found. But the likelihood that thousands of scientists have p-hacked and fudged their way to a false positive in this case is more like 10 sigma.

In the past I have always told you - do not listen to 'a' scientist because one scientist could be a liar. Listen to many, many scientists.

Global warming isn't a pop-science article one small group put together, nor is this video the only argument you need to deny the theories of gravity, relativity or the spherical earth. Perhaps the tinfoil hat was rustling during the important final part of the video but if the alternative method of deduction is 'some crap bob heard on youtube' then I think i'll take my chances with the scientists.

Well that pretty much makes the global warming myth just that a myth.

Ball Lightning Filmed

ForgedReality says...

Hmm... Never seen light move that slowly as it bounces off objects. Do clouds possess some type of magic, other-worldly temporal physics in the reality in which your crazy, tinfoil-hat-wearing brain resides?

Curious minds want to know!

Zawash said:

Everything's out of focus - could just have been a cloud to cloud lightning strike - the "ball" here seems to be clouds lighting up from the strike. Nope. Don't believe it.

Cool, though.

How fracking works

dannym3141 says...

I rather feel that that puts the argument in a skewed light. Essentially, we are either in full awareness of the facts and long term results of fracking or we are not. If we are not yet, why on earth would we pursue it now? We have alternative forms of energy production, it's just a whole bunch of very rich people aren't quite done selling us oil yet.

The shale will still be there, and we may have developed more efficient and safer means of extracting it. And we will have to deal without oil eventually, what better time to begin, whilst we still have some that we can get if we utterly must? We are not yet in crisis but they want to take a risk, that's got to make you ask a few questions. I don't have a detailed scientific knowledge of the subject, but i would know if it was proven safe, and it isn't yet.

Incidentally or otherwise, the first earthquake that i've ever felt in my life happened very shortly after they began a new testing site for fracking nearby - one of two earthquakes that happened in short succession after the first wave of tests. I live in the north of england.. they never happen. It's worth looking into before we start doing it.. the last person i'm going to trust with the future of this planet is an oil baron.

@BoneRemake - let me know which bit of my horseshit you want me to look past and i'll attempt to look past it and see what you describe. Or was it an empty sound-bite? My criticism was valid - newt said everything that needed to be said on that subject, and yes i can in retrospect see the value of the video as a demonstration of the fracking process. But you don't have to be a hippy to try and see positive and informed decisions made in the world, but if it makes me one then i'm glad to be one. What does that make you? No need for name calling, it generally means you've not got an argument.

I'd just like to mention that it really, really suits the pro-fracking lobbyists to try and ridicule people and try to conjure mental images of the long-haired flower-child hugging trees and not showering and wearing tinfoil hats. It turns real, intelligent, professional people who care about what happens around them into caricatures, and it belittles their reasoned and sensible argument without even addressing it. It is a tactic as old as the hills.. i'm sure you're not a lobbyist, but i can't help think they're smiling knowing that the old seeds they scattered around took root somewhere..!

Unfortunately fracking has become politicized and so there are no longer any sources of information that can be expected to be honest. It is now just another dichotomy: A completely safe method of resource collection, or a WMD disguised as such.

How fracking works

newtboy jokingly says...

Tin foil hat wearing newtboy is not angrily screaming on the street corner to no one.

EDIT:YT description...industry description of their video includes the word "safe" twice in describing an unsafe practice, and "environmentally responsible" to describe an environmentally disastrous process....but not propaganda?

"Safe, cost-effective refinements in hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking), horizontal drilling and other innovations now allow for the production of oil and natural gas from tight shale formations that previously were inaccessible. This video introduces the proven techniques used to extract resources from shale formations in a safe, environmentally responsible manner."

OK then. Guess I'm just a nut job.

I consider it a knee-jerk reaction to you having to read something you'd rather either berate or deny. Not very fucking cool, DUUUUUUDE!

Guy bashes on the new youtube comment system

MilkmanDan says...

To my eye, it seems like YouTube has been actively trying to piss users off with shit like this for a while now. I don't have enough of a tinfoil hat on to actually think that is true, but it sure seems like it.

This guy hit a lot of the issues, but here's my rundown of annoyances:
* I've used GMail forever. In the past year, Google decided that means that I want their services for everything. YouTube, Google+, etc. etc. No, I don't.

* GMail inbox now has handy-dandy tabs that separate my email into "Primary" (the one I actually want), "Social" (can I rename this 'trash'?), and "Promotions" (kill it with fire). I don't want that crap, other than as a filter that immediately trashes it and marks as spam.

* YouTube embeds used to not show annotations by default. Which was nice, because annotations suck. Now, the embed player seems to decide that you want them all the time, unless you want to sign in and go through a 19-step process to disable them.

* Caching and streaming used to work. I don't have a massively fast connection, and I live on the opposite side of the earth which gives me high latency. BUT, my connection is fast enough that I used to be able to pick out videos that I really want to watch in high quality, set to 1080p, pause, and let it cache for a few minutes. With that head start, I could probably play the video the whole way through. Now, if I pause, the player decides that I really want it to shittily try to transition down to a lower quality, which frequently garbles the whole video stream for a moderate duration and occasionally crashes it altogether. Thanks for that!

Plenty more issues, but I guess I'll stop there. Basically, all that Google/YouTube have accomplished is to encourage me to put on Adblock Plus, Adblock Plus Element Hiding Helper (hide the entire f*&$ing comments section, nag-bars, etc. -- highly recommended), and Flash Video Downloader. That last one lets me simply download videos, at any quality available, so I can watch at my leisure.

Of course, YouTube is in a constant arms race with all those downloader plugins, so they periodically break for a day or so while they are updated to circumvent the YT blocks. But generally, they work well and let me download material to use when teaching classes here in rooms with no net connection.

MSNBC PSA - All Your Kids Are Belong to Us

VoodooV says...

quite honestly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the words she chose, blankfist is just artificially attaching a negative spin to it all. Cherry-picking words that can be spun into political talking points without any evidence to back his tinfoil hat conspiracy theories.

But hey, that's the world we live in. In a rational person's world, an accusation without proof is no accusation at all, but in the current world we live in now. people drop BS accusations all the time and they stick long after they have been disproven, which is what blankie is counting on.

Yogi said:

I don't understand, this seems very reasonable. She's talking about socializing the burden of public schooling instead of making them private or voucher schools. So for instance I care if the children in my town get a good education, I want them to learned and have a good future. I'm willing to pay taxes to let that happen, especially if that means they get to have some food in the morning and afternoon, when a lot of kids can't afford breakfast.

So even though she words it sort of stupidly, this is basic human caring for one another. You have to work very hard to drive out the instinct to give a crap about people. Unfortunately the public relations industry has been pretty successful at it. You're not supposed to care if kids starve near you, you have your own big screen and your team is doing well, fuck everything else.

The Road to World War 3

dannym3141 says...

Firstly, i consider your comment quite overly dramatic in itself; so it's a bit rich that you're invoking histrionics.

Secondly, your comment is without substance - which parts of history does this video lie about? If you think it's wrong, prove it so; according to him, many things in the public domain are set up to fool us, so it should be easy for you to show exactly where he's wrong, and i will not do you the injustice of donning a tinfoil hat and calling all sources propaganda. I will listen to you just as i listened to him.

Finally, at least this person cares enough to be passionate and speak about something he is emotionally invested in. He has not asked me to vote for anyone, he has not asked me to send him any money, he has not asked me to break any laws. He has simply asked me to try and spread information to as many people as possible that our governments are lying to us.

And on top of that - i don't need anyone else to tell me that, because i have been alive and aware of politics for over 10 years. My government has lied to me more times than i can count. They do so each time the elections come around when they make promise after promise that they renege on.

If Chris Christie thinks libertarianism is dangerous...

VoodooV says...

translation: I know you are but what am I.

Libertarianism in the best case is a redundancy. I still remember the first time someone introduced me to the concept of what a Libertarian was. My reaction was "duh, how could anyone possibly be against that?"

Reality however is quite different. Every time we've had an instance of a politician defending the "right" of a corporation to do things everyone knows is harmful to other people, guess what! they're a libertarian!!

Everytime we have an instance of someone complaining about some form of government excess or incompetency and that someone argues we should scrap the whole system, yet has no answer to the question of what would you put in it's place that would be better. Guess what..Libertarian again!

Everyone who seems to think rational self-interest will protect the strong from bullying the weak, again, probably a Libertarian.

Guess what? that conveys the sense that Libertarians = Anarchists or Objectivists/Ayn Rand worshipers.

We only hear about Libertarians when they're bitching about gov't. If the guy in the video is correct and they do agree that Gov't has a role? please elaborate? where IS gov't allowed to step in and intervene and be proactive? If your answer is the Military. BZZZT try again. Every fucking party on this planet agrees that we need a military, the only disagreement is in how much.

So it just does nothing to advance the idea that Libertarians do anything but bitch about the gov't Well get in line...everyone has some grievance with the gov't. Every single party on this planet wants gov't intervention in some things, no intervention in other things. They just disagree in what parts.

So it just makes Libertarians seem redundant. Every single person throughout the political spectrum wants gov't to be no bigger than it needs to be. If you think otherwise, then you need to put on your tinfoil hat.

Even if there was a better way of distinguishing Libertarians apart from the other parties. Guess what. every "ism" on the planet has the problem where not everyone agrees on how things should be done. Ask a 100 libertarians how they think gov't should operate and you'll get 100 different answers, just like if you ask 100 Christians about God, you'll get 100 different answers. Same thing goes with every party.

I'm sure there are some very well intentioned Libertarians out there. Name me someone who doesn't have good intentions? But it's been demonstrated as I mentioned earlier how Libertarianism gets used as an excuse to get away with doing shitty things to people who don't know any better. So tell me how I can tell the difference between the good Libertarians and the "bad" ones

Till then, Libertarianism is a meaningless term.
