What the F*ck happened to Hip-Hop?

newtboy says...

Too much drug use in hip hop....we need more Kendrick?
Um.....swimming pool.
I love his music, but he's not exactly a positive roll model when it comes to responsible drug/alcohol use.

FOUND Missing 12 Thai Soccer Kids Trapped in Flooded Cave

MilkmanDan says...

I've been following this story here. Sure was happy when they were found alive -- I had started to lose much hope after they'd been gone 4+ days.

The bad news today is that a Thai volunteer diver, a former SEAL, died on a return trip from setting up extra air supply tanks along the route. BBC coverage is very good:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-44734385

Most cave diving experts think that it would be extremely risky to try to move the kids out by diving. One of the on-scene people from the US has said that none of the boys know how to swim, let alone dive, and the conditions in cave diving make it so that panic can quickly lead to disaster.

Unfortunately, a new complication has come up. Oxygen levels in the chamber they are in are now at 15%, down from the usual 21%. They are working to get piping in to supply fresh air, but logistics of that are difficult since they need about 3 miles of piping. And to make matters worse, heavy rains are in the forecast, which will further stress the pumping that they are doing to keep water levels low in the cave.

The Thai head of the Navy rescue operation was quoted today as saying that "At first, we thought the children could stay for a long time... but now things have changed, we have a limited time." If that is correct and can't be resolved (due to dropping oxygen levels, rising water, or whatever), they may have to opt for the risky exit via diving. So definitely not out of the woods yet.

Just search for Roy and HG commentary. There are dozens of videos covering gymnastics, weightlifting, syncro swimming, etc. The creator of this video would be well aware of their work.

Mean Tweets – Avengers Edition

I am curious where this idea that a group's social/economic status dictates their ability to be racist comes from. That's simply not part of any actual definition of the term.
I have found an online movement to change the meaning to your interpretation, but I don't see any logic to it.

Put simply, every actual definition I can find (i checked >5) says it's thinking a person can/cannot do (X) because they are (race).

Assuming a kid can swim because they're white is racism "against whites" exactly like assuming a black child can't swim is racism "against blacks".
I'm open to argument about that, but 'that's not what I think it means' lacks evidence and therefore lacks persuasion.

I think you may be confusing/conflating racism with institutional racism....the latter fits your definition much more closely.

The comment I was replying to was about "racism" towards whites. Not sure where non-white on non-white racism comes into this. I just don't believe making fun of, or critisizing, or generalization of whites can be considered racism. We're on top. If someone marginalized by whites marginalizes someone else further down the oppression scale, that would certainly be racism.

Bill Maher - Punching Nazis

dannym3141 says...

Yet it is how they were ultimately defeated.

I don't mind swimming against the stream on this one; i think it's fine to punch nazis.

When you express your support for nazis, you're not just saying you have an alternative viewpoint. You are saying that you support the ideals of the old nazi party, you support Hitler & his goals, you want to see people exterminated in a genocidal system and you celebrate that such a system existed. You are actively pursuing a course of action that, if successful, will result in the deaths of millions of people. Your goal is to kill people.

I don't think there's any comparison to the same kind of treatment of the Phelps family. They celebrate death, misery and hate, but they never killed millions of Jews and other 'undesirables.' They are unconscionable bastards, but that's it. Your end goal in supporting them is not violence & genocide.

I can justify breaking the law to punch a nazi in the same way i can justify breaking the law to protest a fascist government. Laws aren't divine or sacrosanct, and they certainly aren't constant. Our oligarchs meddle with them on a daily basis. The right thing to do may not always be the legal thing to do, and you should not rely on your government to decide right and wrong for you (that's what nazi germany thrived on - 'i was only obeying orders'). The "law" argument will never convince me.

But i might be convinced for other reasons.
