ERB ~ Houdini vs. Copperfield

DC's Legends of Tomorrow Trailer

JustSaying says...

To be honest, Arrow became a really good show (although I have to admit that season two was so far the strongest) and Flash turned out to be very good, going far beyond my own expectations. I worry what DC brings to the big screen a lot but I have zero worries about their CW shows. Only Supergirl makes me suspicious, mainly because of that SNL black widow sketch.

It probably identifies the tooth with the strongest smell of human blood about it. Kind of disturbing. Definitely keep that thing caged at night.

Gaza: Why is no-one rebuilding it? BBC News

bcglorf says...

If you want to know why Gaza hasn't been rebuilt, you need to ask who exactly is supposed to do the work and buy the materials? Presumably, Hamas being the strongest faction and nominally ruling government of Gaza, it would be on them to rebuild. The answer then IMO, is that Hamas is too busy rebuilding what really matters to them, their military capacity to continue to wage more attacks on Israel.

To be fair, Israel hasn't done much to help rebuild Gaza either, but I still must insist that the biggest burden of failure is on the leadership in Gaza who are seemingly far more successful in acquiring small arms, rockets and fighters than concrete and construction crews.

An interesting Quote:

"Fancy" is my strongest statement for women's lib, if you really listen to it. I agree wholeheartedly with that movement and all the serious issues that they stand for — equality, equal pay, day care centers, and abortion rights."

Sounds pretty much like a justification for not looking at this crap objectively.
"...who has dedicated his life protecting others"
What would happen if he said no? What would happen if he said, what I do is wrong? What we do as a nation in other countries is wrong. What if the roles of me and my enemy were switched? Why do we meddle in their affairs and dont learn from history that has hundreds of times proven that something like that will only make things worse?
He would lose everything. His job, money, everything he ever thought he could do and probably also lose his family. He would be called a traitor, a pussy by his friends and society and whatnot.
Thats why its only about protecting oneself. Ignorance is the strongest weapon for people like him. Talk to people like him about politics. They dont understand whats going on, and they also dont want to understand, because who would want to be proven wrong with everything they did and believed in all of their life? Your whole life a lie? Your lifes works despicable and youre just a tool for corrupt politicians? They are conditioned, indoctrinated. Sad, but still dangerous as the last decades have shown so well. They are not at fault, they are the victims of politics. But they also support those politics because they dont understand whats really going on. A vicious circle.

Adventure Time Sums Up The Law

ChaosEngine says...

That's one way of looking at it.

The other way is that if it wasn't for the law, the strongest would be fucking over the weak even more.

It's the old Hobbes V Rousseau argument.

The Story of Your Enslavement

SquidCap says...

Has a underlying "taxes are theft" theme hidden inside. It also totally sidesteps a lot of important steps needed when large number of people live inside finite space, infrastructure, order, sustenance. It all needs to be managed, otherwise we are back to tribes instead of nations. We are free but responsible, if nothing else than to our fellow humanbeings. Being totally free also means freedom to kill, maim, destroy. And we are all a bit evil, selfish, enough so that taxes are not voluntary.. It is so easy to say that taxes enslave us when you don't give out any alternatives that would work.. Anarchy does not work, it's the power of the strongest, anarcho-capitalism is a horrible idea. It is about as equally terrifying as Ayn Rands ideas.

White House - U.N shelter attack totally unacceptable

billpayer says...

The U.N. accused Israel of killing children as they slept, when a U.N. run school sheltering 3000 refugees was shelled 3 times.

"This is surely an affront to all of us. A source of universal shame. Today the world stands disgraced."

The school had been announced to the Israeli army 17 times.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this serious violation of international law by Israel forces"

Sarah Palin argues it's time to impeach Obama

chingalera says...

Sorry-You are wrong, wrong, wrong. The '24-hour-news' cycle is an illusion. This shit is pumped-into homes 24/7 with a view to PROGRAMMING you.

If you'd like an example of how effective the formula of disinformation and distraction has become, you have but to read this thread and compare the opinions and editorializing on this ("Palins' a fucking idiot", fucking, "fox is shit, blah, blah, blah") particular distraction, to a grade-school argument over which character from the Transformers is the strongest, why dogs are better than cats, etc.

Editorializing over these talking-head fuck-sticks....Mind-numbingly retarded and an insult to meaning and intelligence. Please peeps, get a clue.

Television has become the worst drug imaginable, a weapon and tool of fascists and thugs, and you people eat the shit up like Skittles....Behold the instrument of your brain's demise.

wow, they really are copying fox news.

I may completely agree with him but that was ridiculous, but then again, Orly is a ridiculous person. I guess that's the question then. What's worse, giving ridiculous people a platform, or a press that behaves ridiculously too?

im thinking this is just a symptom of the 24 hour news cycle. they don't have enough news to fill that 24 hours, so they create their own drama. giving airtime to people who are not experts and who are not rational.

reactions to the mountain viper fight GoT - spoilers

harlequinn says...

I watched it carefully. His arm moves very fast for a dying man. Keep in mind, I think they set the tone of Oberyn's amazing speed and reaction time when they first introduced him and he nailed that guard's hand to the table. So I would have liked them to persist with that (as in, fast as the Mountain was he would still be too slow)

Being run through with a huge bladed spear twice will inflict massive trauma to a very vascular region, creating immediate blood loss and very quick hypovolaemic shock. I agree that you can keep going until your blood pressure is low enough to knock you down (I was a paramedic - that's bread and butter stuff for me). But he already fell down involuntarily. If he made a massive adrenaline fueled exertion after that I expect to see rainbows of blood coming out of the Mountain (for the viewers pleasure of course) and for you to be slower (you've got blood loss! - which doesn't speed you up).

As I wrote I haven't read the books, so a lot of the nuances will be lost on me (and other unenlighted).

I would have dropped the emotion and instead pushed the cockiness of Oberyn and let that be his downfall (and you could have almost the exact same ending).

I understand in the book the Mountain is like 8 feet tall. This would have helped with the skull popping effect (which is not possible by even the strongest men in our world). And it would have made it look cool with a veritable giant next to Oberyn.

Chairman_woo said:

I also don't see how you can describe the mountain as a "super ninja" here. Everything he does at the end is an exercise in brute strength, let's not forget he's wearing mailed fists, the blow to the mouth need not be especially strong or quick to do the damage. All he does after that is roll on top of him with the last bit of strength and rage he has (spurred on by his "beetle crushing" fuck everything mindset). Subsequently crushing the skull has more to do with his upper body weight as his hands alone.

A massive strong man yanks someone's legs out from under them, punches them in the mouth and then climbs on top (while they are stunned) to finish the job.

Being run through doesn't necessarily stop one's muscles from working until the blood loss kicks in. Doubly so with the adrenaline of a life or death fight (and the anaesthetic effect massive trauma has on the nervous system). There are countless stories of soldiers and criminals being mortally wounded by multiple shots to the chest who continued attacking till the blood loss overcame them. Gregor Clegane is exactly the sort of psycho who might exhibit such bloody minded behaviour.

I might also remind you that the Mountain has one more than one occasion been described as "swifter than might be expected for a man of such stature" i.e. not a lumbering hulk. He gets several blows in on Oberyn during the fight. Many of the swings are extremely heavy but they are calculated moves from an expert fighter who is more than capable of moving quickly when needed.

Oberyn is quicker, but the Mountain is not exactly slow (that's one of the reasons why the Mountain is/was formerly undefeated, he's big but can still move relatively quickly for his size).

Colbert Shows Just How Backward Florida Gun Laws Are

harlequinn says...

Interestingly, in this video at least, he was firing a .22lr Ruger MkII, about as low powered a pistol as you can get. .22lr has a hard time going through inch thick plywood (when fired from a pistol). This is different than the alleged .357 magnum, .38 special, and .380 ACP the random lady was calling out.

The gun range guy is incorrect. Some people always get on target with static shooting. Those destroyed walls in his range will (in my experience) be from beginners. Even then, there are degrees of off target. You can miss significantly to the sides of most targets and still safely hit the backstop. You have to be shooting incredibly wide or high to miss the backstop.

Noise is a big issue here. Suppressors are legal in Florida with the right permit - he should get them for all his firearms.

Safety is an issue as well, if the entire wall area he firing into is not thick enough to stop his strongest firearm then there is serious risk of injuring someone else. He should build a mini steel and concrete reinforced range.

Fuel tanks don't automatically explode. MythBusters did this in two episodes, and you need a tracer round fired from a long distance to ignite a tank's fuel.

Regardless of the legalities or not, if his neighbours are scared and annoyed, (and regardless of whether or not it is a rational fear), he should be considerate of his neighbours and their concerns and do more to alleviate their concerns.

The Man Who Redefined Monster Movies

Sagemind says...

Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who designed the creature in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror classic Alien, has died at age 74 from injuries suffered in a fall, his museum said Tuesday.

Sandra Mivelaz, administrator of the H.R. Giger museum in Gruyeres, western Switzerland, told The Associated Press that Giger died in a hospital on Monday.

Giger's works, often showing macabre scenes of humans and machines fused into hellish hybrids, influenced a generation of movie directors and inspired an enduring fashion for "biomechanical" tattoos.

"My paintings seem to make the strongest impression on people who are, well, who are crazy," Giger said in a 1979 interview with Starlog magazine. "If they like my work they are creative ... or they are crazy."
