Fétiche Mascotte (Duffy the Mascot, aka The Mascot, aka Puppet Love, aka The Devil's Ball) (1934), a strange story about a loving dog puppet who practically goes through Hell to get an orange to a dying girl. Director Ladislas Starevich (1882-1965) was a Polish, Russian and French stop-motion animator who used insects and animals as his protagonists.

Yeah, it's not the instrument that's problematic for that song. I can honestly admit I like simple electronic sounds. That is cool your keyboard works after that long. I don't think I've had any piece of electronic equipment last me more than about 10 years. I'm just too damn clumsy.

In reply to this comment by kronosposeidon:
You know that little Casio keyboard in that video? I have one just like that. I got it as a gift 25 years ago. And it still works. I gave it to my son, and now he messes around with it sometimes. You might not like its sound, but you have to admit it was built to last.

Levi's Trademark - Surreal 70s commercial

budzos says...

Haha, yeah.

No the stuff at the end is not CG. There are a few layers of effects. The bubbles are airbrushed, each on their own cel so that they overlap organically (the transulcent paint increases opacity with layers). The rainbow looks hand animated to me. The glowing sparks that look like CG particle systems are hand-animated backlit gels. The jeans are stop motion animated and then hand-masked if not blue-screened (which would require using white or black jeans and then re-tinting them).

^these are all guesses, but there is no CG I can tell ya that!

Is it appearing on top of the Unsifted pages like it's supposed to? Because jonny and I are both reporting problems in seeing the videos we just promoted. At least I hope everyone else can see it. I'd hate to find out that my * promote did the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do. Keep an eye on the number of views it gets over the next couple of hours (if that's possible for you). If it doesn't go up at all I suspect the problem may be more widespread than I imagine.

Glad I could promote it. I think it's one of the more clever stop-motion animations I've seen in a while.

In reply to this comment by Fjnbk:
Thank you very much! We'll see how well it does at the end.

In reply to this comment by kronosposeidon:
That was cool as hell! Why am I the first person out of 26 viewers to vote for this? I'll see what I can do about that.

Interkosmos: Utopian Communist Space Dance Party

rickegee says...

From the Village Voice:

"Jim Finn's Interkosmos, a retro gust of Communist utopianism, is set to open the New York Underground Film Festival on March 8. A cosmonaut romance set aboard a 1970s East German space mission to colonize the moons of Saturn and Jupiter, Interkosmos weaves together lovingly faked archival footage, charmingly undermotivated musical numbers, propagandistic maxims ("Capitalism is like a kindergarten of boneless children"), stop-motion animation (of a suitably crude GDR-era level), a Teutonic (and vaguely Herzogian) voiceover, and a superb garage-y Kraut-rock score (by Jim Becker and Colleen Burke). Finn's deadpan is immaculately bone-dry, and his antiquarian fastidiousness is worthy of Guy Maddin"
