Jackie Chan - How to Do Action Comedy

Retroboy says...

Curious as to how people feel about "Kung Fu Shuffle" and "Shaolin Soccer" by Stephen Chow back in the 2000's? It fits the genre (of sorts), has comedy (although perhaps more oriental than western in sensibilities), and I've found them to be lots of fun. There's some parallels between him and Jackie, although Steven's not acted in a while.

Why War is Killing Less of Us Than Ever

ChaosEngine says...

*quality video.

If anyone would like to read more on this subject, I recommend Steven Pinkers The Better Angels of Our Nature, which also covers deaths by crime, disease, malnutrition, etc. It's one of the most information dense books I've ever read, filled with all kinds of historical anecdotes* and grisly statistics about violent deaths per capita throughout history, but it basically boils down to this:

we live in the healthiest, happiest, most peaceful time in history.

The reason it seems so bad is that we simply have more access to information about conflicts, murders, etc than we did in the past.

It's important to note that while Vulture Capitalism isn't as bad as colonialism, it's still Pretty Fucking Bad.

* fascinating fact: the reason dinner knives are generally blunt (apart from steak knives) is because it's stopped people getting into an argument over dinner and stabbing each other. It was previously commonplace for everyone to carry their own knife to dinner and eat with it.

Umm......In America, it means something TOTALLY Different!!!

bremnet says...

Oh my.

Gets it = crude - usually a negative connotation
Doesn't get it = prude

How about "smart, understands both uses, but something tripped his giggles and he was gone". I don't know Dan Stevens, I guess you do if you know he is fairly crude. In some countries / regions, saying someone is crude is quite the insult. Especially in regions where there are lots of prudes.

Anyway, must dash, pizza man is here man, and I'm completely shagged.

(ooh, another one - is it shagged = fucked, or shagged = tired? Discuss.)

Have fun. Man.

whu... now, what are YOU even talking about? What label? On who? On British men? Chris Morris, Dan Stevens and I all immediately understood what beating off meant. Because we're fairly crude. The two first are British men. I'm not. What label are you even talking about? How high are you, even?

Yes, that's better, put a label on him. Could it not simply be that it struck him as funny, and he couldn't regain composure? You're such a dick. (now, do I mean 'dick = penis' or 'dick = investigator employed in gaining / exposing information through reasoned deduction'... hmmmm)

Ok? British man Chris Morris knows about it. British man Dan Stevens obviously knows about it. I don't think it's a US vs UK thing but a prude vs crude thing. Prudes don't get it and crude people do.

It may mean the same thing, but it's not a term that's commonly used here, if it was, Susanna Reid would've known that & not used it.

WTF Happened to PG-13?

Sarzy says...

Per Wikipedia: "Poltergeist initially received an R rating[15] from the MPAA. As the PG-13 rating did not come into effect until 1984, which would have been an appropriate rating at the time, Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper disagreed with the 'R' rating and managed to have the film changed to a 'PG' rating on appeal."

Poltergeist was NOT fucking PG! I clearly remember not being able to see it because it was R. I don't think I'll watch past the 40seconds I made it to. /:<

Making cocaine in Colombia

Trancecoach says...

Yes, you're ignored, and I read your comment anyway.

No, in saying "use drugs," I was not "implying cannabis." I said "use drugs" because I meant "use drugs." Rather than trying to interpret or 'read into' what I'm saying, it might help if you responded to my post, and not what you post in your mind on my behalf.

And I will take you up on your 'challenge:' below is a list of ten "highly intelligent" people who have used cocaine (note: at no point did I say "encourages the use of cocaine." I said "use drugs" without becoming addicted, and being able to function), so that you can provide me with 10,000 more** whose lives and families have been destroyed by it. (**And note here, we're talking about individuals whose lives were destroyed by the use of cocaine itself, and not by the pointless drug laws that imprison people for having a mental or emotional condition that provokes "self-medication" as a form of treatment. Nor are we talking about the illegal status of cocaine which, itself, gives rise to violent cartels that function in the shadow of its legal status.)

So, while certainly many of the following list of "highly intelligent" (non-cognitively deficient) and successful "celebrities" may no longer be using cocaine, all of the following have used cocaine and are/were not addicted and function(ed) just fine:

Sigmund Freud
Thomas Edison
Oprah Winfrey
Stephen King
Tim Allen
Hunter S. Thompson
Angelina Jolie
Robert Louis Stevenson
Steven Tyler
Robert Downey, Jr.

There are others (like William Burroughs, Eric Clapton, Grover Cleveland, David Crosby, Arthur Conan Doyle, Isadora Duncan, Ulysses S Grant, Abbie Hoffman, Elton John, King George V, Larry Kudlow, Sir Paul McCartney, & Barack Obama), but I thought I'd stop at 10.

And if you post the 10,000 names of those whose lives and families were destroyed by cocaine (and not by the pointless drug laws or its illegal status) by the end of the week, I'll take your point.

mxxcon said:

"use drugs" and "use cocaine" are extremely different things. I'm sure in your statement you intentionally and covertly implied cannabis.
However, having said that, for every "highly intelligent" person that you'd show me who encourages the use of cocaine, I'll show you 1000 more that had their lifes and families destroyed by it. For every 1 "highly intelligent" person you show me that did not get addicted to cocaine, I'll show you 1000 more that did.

Alas, I'm ignored, so have a good cocaine-filled day, crackhead.

BicycleRepairMan says...

Rushdie actually called Stewart himself after the Cat Stevens thing and Stewart realized his mistake in inviting Yusuf Islam to the rally. Penn Jillette tells this story on one of his sunday school podcast episodes. Stewart first vigorously defended himself, then hung up, checked the facts and called Rushdie back with a full apology. Couldnt find that clip, but Rushdie mentions the incident here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThUgpNYr2Oo
