The Speed Camera Lottery - The Fun Theory

Trancecoach says...

too bad this'll never happen in the U.S.

I wonder what, if any, difference there is in the reduction of people's speeding with the inclusion of the lottery possibility for non-speeders versus that of simply a fine for speeders. Also, do you have to be going exactly the speed limit to get entered, or can you be driving within a range?

Friendly traffic cop says your ass will be violated

Skeeve says...

I'm constantly defending police officers on the Sift, but there is nothing worthy of defending in this video. The cop was an asshat from the first second to the last.

It's his job to pull over speeders and give them tickets. It's not his job to pull people over and be a giant prick.

All he had to do was pull them over, be friendly (as long as they were being respectful to him), give them a ticket, remind them to slow down, and drive away. Instead he provides perfect fodder for people who already dislike police officers.

I don't care what the circumstances are, threatening someone with rape is never ok.

Where did you all grow up? I'm pretty certain I heard worse 'threats' than this direct at someone every single day in grade school from Grade 7 onward. The cop isn't threatening to do anything but charge them for the offense they committed. Sure, he goes on to suggest that they don't want to go to prison unless they like being raped. He also goes on to not even give them a ticket. If I could trade the two officers that have politely given me tickets with this guy, I would in a heart beat.
Seriously, does this officer really sound that threatening to people? Rude and inappropriate perhaps, but the only thing he threatened to do himself was to write them up for reckless driving, which was after all, his job.

Man Faces Jail Time for Recording Plainclothes Cop

Porksandwich says...

I could see them using it to protect the identities of plainsclothes or undercover police, but then again these same individuals would not be pulling their car into the pathway of other other vehicles and getting out gun in hand......since it kind of makes it hard not to notice them.

I suspect that they want the audio taken out of the video and it destroyed......so that when that guy decides to countersue for extreme and dangerous action being taken to stop a speeder...there won't be multiple seconds of an armed individual on there not identifying himself as police as he bears down on his unsuspecting victim.

I have never seen an unmarked vehicle pull someone over in that way, and usually they have hidden red and blues on the vehicle they can use....which he did not. If the marked car was there, there was no need for armed assailant to leave his vehicle to begin with. Marked car could have easily flipped on his lights and pulled the guy over.

I suspect plain clothes got a little road rage from motorcycle dude, and decided to vent it off in a spectacular "bust". After he calmed down, he realized he might be in real trouble if motorcycle dude or marked car officer decides he acted in an extreme and unsafe manner. I think the video proves this.

Lot of scummy police out there, they can film you with their dash cam (WITH AUDIO!)...I don't see why you can't film them in return.

And as for dude rolling his motorcycle back away from car who just cut into his path? I would have reversed my vehicle if it looked like some dude was trying to box me in or cause problems as well. It's a natural reaction to try to avoid collisions, and dude cutting across your path isn't showing the best judgment (Read: Whack job)...and then he gets out of the vehicle with a gun (Read: Armed Whack Job). He should be scared because I don't think I would have given armed whack job a chance to identify himself when he's already got the gun in his hand. Because that dude looks like he's got a bad case of road rage doing what he did there.

My point is even if the fine is $1000 I am going to speed sometime. If you say you don't speed.... I am calling bullshit. (p.s. im not picking on you.. i like you)
The speed limit around here is mostly 60 MPH. Do you know how many people actually drive 60 all the time? I bet if there are any... it's a relatively small percentage. If I want to drive 70 or 75 so be it. I leave plenty of space between me and the car in front of me. If someone tailgates me I move. I am all about being safe, but mandatory arbitrary speed limits on highways are ridiculous to me. I am totally fine speed limits in residential neighborhoods and school zones. I obey those speeds as I suspect most do.

I don't like stupid rules to be placed on me because other people can't handle their shit. I have an issue with a cop chasing me down the highway at 70 MPH and giving me a $250-300 ticket for speeding. Fuuuuuuck that. Cops have many uses in society and I bet you, I BET, that if they didn't have to babysit the roads then they would be able to perform an ACTUAL service to the community. Those cops didn't sign up to sit on the fucking highway and pull over people to ticket, did they? No most likely they signed up to patrol and protect the citizens... they have no place monitoring my speed.

Too ranty?

This is something that irritates me constantly. Mostly because I am a speeder. Paying a fine of $200 is above and beyond ridiculous. If you get caught speeding, yes, there should be some sort of fine, but hundreds of dollars is excessive and it does not deter me from speeding. What it does do is make the people on the highway slow down to 10 MPH when a cop is on the fucking road.

Fine me, but make it reasonable. Especially in the current economic status of the country.

The point of a fine is to make you say "oh shit, that's a significant % of my paycheck." If it were "reasonable", then you'd be like "Who cares, it's only $(x dollars). I'm late so I really need to speed, and if a get a fine, no big deal."
There are several ways that reducing highway speeds benefit our society. Public safety aside, the efficiency of your car is greatly reduced at higher speeds. A simple way to "reduce our dependence on foreign oil" would be for everyone to just slow the fuck down a little bit.

Mum Tasered In Front Of Kids, Arrested. Kids Left In Vehicle

HollywoodBob says...

You know I see things like this and, aside from adding to my disdain for law enforcement, I sit here wondering, why do we even bother with stopping a speeder? If tickets can be issued from cameras, why can't they be issued the same way by a patrolman without having to confront the offender? It would be simple enough to acquire the plate number and issue the citation/summons via the mail, like they do with speed and red light camera traps.

Guy Stands Up For Rights Against Corporate Photo-Enforcement

ForgedReality says...

People just get pissed when they can't break the fucking law as easily as they feel they should be able to.

There is no statute that says "yeah, someone taking a photo of you breaking the law is, in fact, breaking the law." Come on. Seriously? Quit crying. Those cameras are probably saving lives. The same laws that allow you to videotape an event, such as this, or what have you, allow that company to photograph speeders. What if you were to catch a crime happening while videotaping an event? You should be fined or go to jail for it, right?

It's little douchebag weasels and fucking bullshit like this that stifle justice and keep common sense from prevailing.

I'm not sure which side to take on this, but regardless, this post is disingenuous.

"Increasing the probability that you will harm someone by an outrageously insane degree" is virtually equivalent to "harming someone" as far as the law is concerned.

And as far as the law is concerned if you disturb the peace, you go to jail.

No one would know about Chester's naughty little habbits if the law wasn't looking for people like him. His actions have no effect on what happened to little kids, direct or indirect. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure it's on a level a little more subtle than "industry." Upskirt guy? If no one knew, then no harm done, right?

In this moron's argument, the drunk guy or the speeder haven't harmed anyone, so they're good peaceful people.

Santas Disable Traffic Cameras

MarineGunrock says...

>> ^Memorare:
The primary goal of the cameras is Not to protect people and make them safe, if it happens to do so it's an incidental side-effect.
The goal is to generate $$$ from tickets, and to -automate- the process so the city doesn't have to pay police to sit at the intersection.

While that is all true, it does statistically reduce speeders and does NOT invade any privacy.

the point is that it is ILLEGAL for cops to use infrared scanners on houses.

it was set up to bait ILLEGAL Practices.

ah, I've always been curious about that too! But what i was really asking was what was the secret to that "a href" thing that allows you to make hyperlink embedded in text. I unintentionally typed in < before and > after and it turned into one and somehow assigned a link to my profile page. That's the danger of messing with force powers you don't understand.

In reply to this comment by kronosposeidon:
Pull up a land speeder, son, and I'll tell you the short, boring story:

You already know I'm a Pink Floyd fan, correct? Well one of their earliest recorded songs has these lyrics:

Lime and limpid green, a second scene
A fight between the blue you once knew.
Floating down, the sound resounds
Around the icy waters underground.
Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania.
Neptune, Titan, Stars can frighten.

Blinding signs flap,
Flicker, flicker, flicker blam. Pow, pow.
Stairway scare Dan dare who's there?
Lime and limpid green, the sounds surronds
The icy waters under
Lime and limpid green, the sounds surronds
The icy waters underground.

So way back in the mid '90s, back when this whole crazy World Wide Web thing was just getting off the ground, I chose neptunetitan as my handle everywhere I went. My very first internet email address was neptunetitan@aol.com. And Neptune saw that it was good.

But the internet, being itself, saw that even the faintest glimmer of originality had to punished, because within six months of neptunetitan's genesis, there were 800 gajillion copycat neptunetitans all over the damn place. I couldn't create a new account anywhere with it, because some halfwit had already stolen it from me. So I had to devise something new.

Enter kronosposeidon. Poseidon = Neptune, and Kronos = Ruler of the titans. Now I considered Poseidonkronos at first just to keep the order intact, but that didn't sound as good as kronosposeidon, IMHO. Also if you use it as a replacement in "Astronomy Domine's" lyrics:

Kronos, Poseidon, Stars can frighten

..it almost works, poetically speaking. Astronomically and mythologically speaking, it's a little more of a problem. Hey, I never said I was a genius. I just sell fucking boxes. But on the bright side, kronosposeidon has proven so clunky as a handle that no one but my dumb ass uses it. Believe me, I have accounts all over the intarwebs with kronosposeidon, and I have always had it approved on the first try. Thus my half-assed knowledge of a dead Greek religion has proven useful once in my life. God bless America.

Okay, you can wake up now.
