North Korean Refugees Try American BBQ

newtboy says...

I somewhat disagree, although I don't think much of the average American's grasp on current affairs, especially foreign affairs.

N Korea, however, is so incredibly well known as a mostly desolate wasteland populated by the abused slaves of the despotic dictator that runs it that we made multiple stupid stoner movies about it (one that got Lil' Kim's goat so bad they hacked Sony). To me, that means at least Hollywood sees it as unavoidable information almost everyone knows, even stupid stoners, and really the way it's portrayed in movies and TV indicate that most people think it's worse than it actually is there. It's not really Mad Max times over there like many believe, but it is awful.

I suggest that most American do live in a cave. They don't pay attention to news. They just watch stupid shows and tune out.

They know N Korea is bad but don't really know who evil the leaders are.

Tested HTC Vive review

RFlagg says...

I think there's a great potential starting to develop. Perhaps a stereo camera in the headset would have helped. The Lighthouses probably would help if they had a more Kinect style thing going on, though perhaps they were trying to minimize how much data is going to the system at this point as they controllers and headset are doing enough on their own. It does seem to be thought out better than the Oculus or Sony plans.

The main advantage I see for this is moving to a Ready Player One sort of world, especially for education.

iPhone SE - The Best 4 Inches You Will Ever Receive

It's one of those rare cases where I think it's fair to say that Apple is offering something that is good value.

$400 if you don't plan to use a lot of apps / load music, movies etc on it, for the 16GB version outright is a pretty good deal. The A9 processor tops many benchmarks against top of the line Android phones. That plus 2GB RAM puts it on par with the 6s/Plus. The resolution is fine for the screen size, since the DPI is above 300.

If you are fine with or prefer a smaller screen and want the iOS app store, it really is a fair deal. Yes, something like the Xiaomi Mi 5 still blows it away on the Android side, but if you exclude Xiaomi, I think it's very competitive with the more mainstream Samsung / LG / Sony competition which will not include a top tier processor at this price range.

Reaction to the Fine Brother's "React" Youtube controversy

00Scud00 says...

Wait, Sony couldn't Trademark 'Lets Play' but some podunk YouTubers managed to do it with 'React'? Looks like Sony has been hiring the wrong lawyers.
Hopefully the Fine Brothers will go down in flames for this and a weenie roast will be held in their honor.

Conan Remembers David Bowie

I met him outside the theater in Denver when he was in "The Elephant Man" in 1980. He signed autographs and said a few words into my tape recorder as a greeting to my family. He was very gracious. He was also the first one I ever saw wearing a Sony Walkman at that time, that was right before it became hugely popular.

XCOM 2 trailer

The rumor is they're waiting out for an exclusive or timed exclusive offer from MS or Sony before announcing console release. Not that I care, I'll be playing on PC in Nov!

Looks good. Procedural level design is great news, the downside of the first was at some point you knew the layout of all the maps and it was predictable as hell. I hope they bring back some of the complexity that was missing from the recent reboot (e.g. multiple bases, base grid structure), or at least add new depth.

Kim Jong Un Death Scene From "The Interview"

rebuilder says...

I don't buy for a minute the idea that Sony alone made the call to cancel the release.

What do you do when you get hit and threatened by what appears to be a rogue state, like happened to Sony? You go to the cops. Probably the FBI in this case. After that, considering your company is now in the middle of an international diplomatic situation involving an unstable nuclear power, you get some considered advice from the US state dept. (probably) on how to proceed.

Judging by the outcome, the decision was it's best to cancel the release to avoid making the situation worse, but to make it Sony's call, because a western government would rather not be seen bending to terror or demanding censorship.

Kim Jong Un Death Scene From "The Interview"

speechless says...

Theories like "it's a viral campaign" or that "Sony tanked it" intentionally are completely out of touch with reality and the facts.

To think they would toss one hundred million dollars in the toilet because the movie wasn't funny enough is nuts. Shitty movies get released all the time.

To think they released terabytes of damaging internal documents (social security numbers, passwords, future projects, embarrassing emails etc etc) as some viral campaign is also nuts.

Sony stock has dropped 7% in the last two weeks.
They did NOT do this.

Kim Jong Un Death Scene From "The Interview"

TheFreak says...

There's a story that everyone is carefully not reporting.

If you read about this movie earlier, based on the hacked internal communications at Sony, none of the international executives wanted to distribute this movie from the very beginning. They thought it was a crap movie that wasn't funny. Nobody thought they could sell it in their markets.

It's clear that Sony is using this opportunity to sink the film because it's not worth distributing.
