What happens when you steal a hacker's computer

ipfreely says...

Mel Guzman could have purchased it from a pawn shop, flea market or by any other legitimate means, for all we know. Yet some of you here and on youtube are passing judgement on this person. And I "love" how the speaker makes a snarky remark about having an unemployment form.

How many of you have not had to fill out an unemployment form?

Maybe this person couldn't afford the latest machine because he's, I don't know... unemployed? Maybe he didn't know how to reformat the drives on this machine? Since all the anecdotal information tells us is that Mel got the computer recently and just turned it on.

And before you people jump on my ass... lets read upon the law of Possession of Stolen Goods.

If the individual didn't know the goods were stolen, then the goods are returned to the owner and the individual is not prosecuted. Innocent possession is not a crime.. If Mel was the original thief, why would he still have the computer? Wouldn't a thief sell it quickly as possible to make money... Not hold on to it for 2 years then use it himself?

So it's okay to virtually lynch Mel Guzman... Vigilante Justice in a form of a Hacker Hipster is acceptable in Videosift world?

Videosift is liberal minded, yet there are 98 of you who just assume Mel Guzman stole this computer. You fuckers don't believe in due process before passing judgment?

And yes, it is true it's not the court of law. Yet this video has been viewed by over half of million people... What if one of these people were someone who wanted to hire Mel Guzman. Now because of some smug smart-ass douche bag, Mel Guzman will continued to be unemployed.

You know what would be true justice... If the authorities finds mp3's downloaded from Limewire and RIAA sue the speaker, because we all know Mel does not have the password to install any applications on this machine.

You bunch of phony liberal fuckers. I consider myself a center-right, yet even I know this is wrong.

Merry Fucking Christmas and Happy New Years Assholes.

What Happens when an Alligator Bites an Electric Eel?

grinter says...

"What Happens when an Alligator Bites an Electric Eel?"
I don't know, but when that caiman bit the electric eel it got a hell of a shock.

ok, I'll stop being a smart ass now,
but alligators are restricted to North America and China, electric eels are South American. While caiman are in the family Alligatoridae, the common name "alligator" wouldn't apply. ..oh crap.. there I go again.

oh, and yes, the does have something is his mouth, a fishing lure. You can see the fishing line in the videographer's hand.

Exactly! Thanks for clearing it up, gwiz...

Toronto Police punch reporter in the face twice at G20

shogunkai says...

I got tapes on everything, tapes that incriminate everyone involved. My tapes are so good, you'll imprison yourselves after viewing them.
Because short snap footage of chaos gives a clear view of everything that's happening.
So be aware of my awesome tapes.

nowai...

On topic: I don't understand why people are making such a big deal about someone getting punched in the face. I've been punched before, and let me tell you it really isn't that big of a deal. It's more shocking than anything (unless you get punched on the jaw or the back of the head, then you are on your ass), and the police were obviously kinda busy doing shit when this smart ass reporter shoves a camera in their face. Maybe they just didn't have time to deal with him at that moment? It was becoming a riot... Anyways, I'm not saying that media is in the wrong, just that some people need to take the situation in to context before pushing all blame on the police. They are people too.

Revoke BP's Corporate Charter

blankfist says...

Okay, wait a second. First you claim I'm not answering some fundamental question which I clearly at least attempted to answer though you claimed my attempt was specious at best.

Then, you come at me with a theoretical Walmart scenario and ask me how free markets would "theoretically" solve that; when I reply with real FACTS how the corporate playing field for Walmart is tipped in its favor because of crony capitalism, gov't subsidies and intervention you claim I'm being "theoretical" and therefore my argument is debunked. Facts be damned, I suppose.

Then you throw a "China is a free market heaven" smokescreen at me, which I aptly debunk the position of your argument by showing you China as a state-capitalist system which is antithetical to free markets.

Then you counter with a misdirection by claiming I'm not answering some fundamental elusive question, and you claim I must have proof of a free market's existence otherwise it's all bunk. Fine. I gave you proof how the merchant class rose and started balancing the distribution of power between monarch and commoner, but then you counter with "but corporations are merchants!" WTF? It's like some juvenile circular logic game you're playing.

Look, I cannot be clearer than this. Yes, corporations are doing the jobs common of merchants and bankers. Yes, they're the ruling class. BUT, and I really need you to pay attention here: The merchant class were not corporations, because corporations were the cooperative charters CREATED by the government/monarch/nobles/ruling class to control the merchants, aka the working class, aka the majority of people. The same as it is today. They're your proof of a free market working to balance the wealth and control between government/ruling elite and the people. Corporations were created by government to control the wealth and industry of all people in the kingdom (or nation). To say they "are" merchants therefore they're bad on their face is like saying they also eat and shit like the rest of us so eating and shitting is bad.

It's history. Crack a book. Now, for something really smart ass: "I suppose we can chock this up to another failure of our public school system!" There's no bad blood here, brother. Don't read my tone as angry. Bemused? Yes. Angry? No.

TDS - Law & Border

curiousity says...

>> ^Morganth:

Touche, curiosity. Touche.
I just thought people should keep that in mind. However, you're absolutely right that other countries laws should have no bearing on our own. Two wrongs certainly don't make a right and pointing a finger at Mexico to say "but look what they do!" would be a sad, pathetic attempt of justification.

I do understand your point, but sometimes it's hard to keep my inner smart-ass silent.

Although Mexico's actions in that area shouldn't be used as justification, I do think they should be used for gaining perspective. In that regard, I completely agree with you. Many people just don't know how good they have it.

Police Brutality in Victoria, BC.

Porksandwich says...

Cases where kicking someone in a place that could potentially hurt them badly, such as the head or ribs, would to me include: They are actively attempting to hurt anything that can feel pain whether it be an officer, civilian, or a dog/cat/whatever. Or they have just committed an act of harm against another. Guy in video at the end appeared to ask a question, then uniform officer tells him to get down, they both jump on him and he appears confused by one cop answering questions like he's a person and the other screaming like he's a criminal.

The guy at the last part of the video isn't complying but I can't tell if he's saying something or not. Or if he's just too drunk/stoned or scared or mentally handicapped. Personally if I just watched them beat someone else, I don't think I'd want to have my hands strapped behind my back and take the risk of them deciding to kick me too.

If two police officers can't wrestle the guy down and get his arms behind his back with their combined strength, then they should hold him at gun point or taser him because he's too much for them to handle and call for more help.

Unless they've had to arrest this guy a dozen times before, they simply don't know if the guy is medically messed up in the head or physically where beating him isn't going to change his ability to understand or perform their actions.

My brother is mentally challenged enough that he is very slow to react and often times doesn't comprehend many requests or commands made of him until you repeat it a different way or show him. Or if he's scared/caught off guard, he just stops processing completely and it looks like he's trying to be a smart ass because he just gives you a blank stare. He also has epilepsy. He was told by an officer to put a brightly colored card in his wallet stating his name/address/medications/medical conditions so he could give to officers if something were to occur. It doesn't do any good when they are ready to throw you to the ground the minute you reach into your pocket, especially when you just don't understand the situation like my brother often has problems with. He tries to be compliant, but most cops won't give him the chance or try to explain because they just assume they have a trouble maker on their hands and get ready to "handle it". Bottom line is, people have problems you can't often tell by just looking at them. Not all mentally handicap have physical characteristics to distinguish them. Most people don't realize it about my brother until they've spoken with him awhile or I tell them before hand, they just assume it's shyness or social awkwardness.

No one should be kicked in the head or ribs. I can understand kicking someone's legs out from under them, or kicking their arms/hands away from their body to keep them from reaching for stuff.

And I may be mistaken, but it appears the non-yellow jacket officer at the end is smiling. That is not a situation where most people should be smiling. I could see if the guy is just crazy as hell, but not after your buddy has kicked him a couple times and you just had problems getting him to obey your orders.

IT'S ON, BROTHERS AND SISTERS. KULPIMS GETS WHAT'S COMING! (Parody Talk Post)

dotdude says...

Kulpims, our own Slovenian slacker, admits to being a loser, a smart ass, a drunk and a stoner. He’s already done such a good job of roasting himself, but he left out wannabee.

He lovingly refers to VideoSift as his Sift-crack, choggieland and Home. ‘Guess he didn’t get the eviction notice.

Rosie Palm mentioned that she’s tired of the whole “jazz and jizz” routine. She started to complain hysterically about his obsession with “ass gravy,” but then suddenly went quiet.

He’s been so vigilant in eradicating dupes he’s been nicknamed Deputy Dupe of the VideoSift PD. Siftbot has been run so ragged with commands, he now has kulpims on ignore.

Kulpims is not fond of LOL Cats. Too bad there aren’t any LOL Dogs.

Good night and may the Farce be with you.

Keith Olbermann Responds to Jon Stewart

Olbermann has been a stain on the reputation of liberals for a long time. He makes a minor, smart-ass apology without any hint of accountability or recognition of his persistent damage to the liberal cause, and everybody uncritically licks it off his face. Business as usual

Invocation links... (Sift Talk Post)

xxovercastxx says...

champ got it right, but he took all the smart-ass out of it that made my initial comment so self-amusing.

(The following paragraph came out sounding a little obnoxious. That's unintentional.)

At some point you have to be responsible for what you type/click and the rest of us shouldn't be inundated with "Are you sure?" messages because some people don't want to pay attention. It's annoying enough that I have to confirm a downvote.

Why do we have to confirm downvotes but not upvotes? Is accidentally upvoting not just as bad as accidentally downvoting? Why do votes even lock in? Why can't I shift my vote between up, neutral and down at any time? Sometimes you just feel different about a video after you've had time to consider it or after reading an informative comment.

There is a confirmation required. It's the button with the text "submit new comment" on it that you clicked after the "discuss" link.

Hmm, I didn't see it last time.

I think what overcast means is that clicking an invocation only inserts it into the comment textbox. You still have to submit the comment by clicking the submit button, which can be seen as kind of a confirmation. Adding another confirmation for the invocation links themselves might be a bit overkill, especially when all you want to do is post an invocation without any additional text. You'd have to first click the invocation, then click its confirmation and then click submit.

Oh. See that was the thing, I wasn't paying attention and I must had accidently clicked on the link when moving my mouse. I do not have stable hands/a body.
