The Lexus Hoverboard - It's Real!

newtboy says...

OK....if that's how you want to be about it! ;-)

Still, it seemed to me that that guy (over water) had something much closer to a 'real' hoverboard than these guys did.

There was also that version that worked over any copper surface,
http://videosift.com/video/Real-Life-Hoverboard
which I thought was also way 'better' than this version which needs the embedded mag-lev track to work.

The 'over water' guy just needs to miniaturize (although that would make balancing near impossible) to meet your specs.

Just curious, would you accept a pair of skateboard sized (+-) hover-boots as hoverboards, or would that be just a pair of hoverskates?

We're talking about the Back to the Future hoverboard, which is the size of a skateboard, not just any gigantic machine on which a person could stand and be lifted.

Trike drifting down the steepest street in the world

poolcleaner says...

Trikes though? That's cool but very repetitive it seems, with you essentially just sitting on your ass all of the time. I don't think I could adopt another hobby which has me sitting on my ass. Check out Sergio Yuppie for some serious downhill acrobatics.

I'm guessing they would be terminally lacking in pop. That might not be the case if they were pre-stressed when the layers were bonded together though. I really like the look of those wooden cabinet-looking ones.

They're really pushing it with all the self congratulations on being such do gooders, though. It's a nice idea but a pretty thin concept in practice. I hardly see the cost of the deck material being significant when it comes to hand made skateboards. Plywood isn't exactly expensive.

A Response to Lars Andersen: a New Level of Archery

Babymech says...

Essentially Lars video was the archery-equivalent of those trick-shot basketball videos where you know that what was done required skill, luck, and several takes - if those basketball videos also had a voice-over explaining how hundreds of years ago legendary b-ballers mastered the skill of blindfolded trick shots over buildings while skateboarding downhill... but sadly their secret technique was lost to history.

Tony Hawk Test Drives the Real Hoverboard

ChaosEngine says...

I'm not sure about the power inefficiencies, but I doubt anyone will be able to afford to cover their entire factory/skatepark with copper (? not sure what that surface is). Could be useful as tracked pathways, maybe.

Not sure why they're wearing skiing goggles?

Finally, Tony shows the problem with a hoverboard at the end. Skateboards, snowboards, skis, rollerskates, bikes....these are all controlled by changing your balance and altering the friction between the board and the ground. If you're not touching the ground... how the hell do you steer the damn thing?

Still cool though

As I understand it, they're really intended one day for moving heavy things around in an industrial setting. I'm sure it's massively power inefficient, but hell, it's cool.

Downhill Skateboarding With Surprise Ending

FlowersInHisHair says...

The ending was not unexpected. Most downhill-skateboarding-on-a-tarmac-road videos I've seen end up with someone falling off, falling over, or hitting something. Too much FailArmy I suppose!

Dancing at 60FPS is unreal

iaui says...

I'm inferring here, but it might have something to do with the skateboard in the background. During tricks skate shoes will accrue wear on that spot from the sandpaper-like tape on the top of the board. Looks like the painted sole has been worn through to the white-coloured rubber and the black cloth parts in that area have been frayed.
