The Atheist Delusion

SDGundamX says...

Meh, I'll upvote if only so that we can have some variety here on the Sift. Sure, the arguments made in the video are painfully absurd but I'd rather seem them ripped to shreds in the comments then disappear from the Sift entirely due to downvotes.

Trump Jokes That Gun Owners Can 'Fix' the Clinton Problem

heropsycho says...

There's two big differences between them as far as voters see them. Both are disliked very much.

However, there's a large portion of the people who hate Hillary Clinton do it for completely fabricated reasons. This isn't to say that there aren't some reasons to hate her. But when Trump and the GOP are going around saying stuff like "Hillary Clinton wants to abolish the 2nd Amendment", which absolutely isn't true in the slightest, gosh, I wonder if there's a portion of the electorate who will hate her for a complete falsehood. Who could it be? Hmmmm....

Again, don't get me wrong, there's plenty to not like about her. I've said numerous things about the whole email thing, which I still can't believe she ended up doing something that stupid.

Trump? Well, I'm sorry, but he's said so many things at this point to piss so many groups off, they hate him for things that actually are true. He did target Muslims for discriminatory policies. He has said disparaging remarks about women, implying a news anchor who disagreed with him must be on her period, and women who get sexually harassed should find another job, not the people who were doing the sexual harassment. He's said most Mexican immigrants are rapists, murderers, and drug runners. And Hillary Clinton is mostly hitting on stuff like that, you know, stuff he's ACTUALLY said. In fact, one of her attack ads is just a barrage of clips of Trump saying Trumpy stuff with kids watching it. There's not a shred of evidence Hillary Clinton has ever come out in favor of completely abolishing the 2nd Amendment.

So, you can say half the country hates her, but come election day, when she wins by what appears at this point to be a margin larger than Obama thumped Romney, CLEARLY Americans like Clinton a heck of a lot more than Trump overall.

So popping a cap into a Clinton is a bad thing?

About 1/2 the country think that that would be a good thing.

The other 1/2 think putting a cap in Trump would be a good thing.

Put a cap in both and vote for @newtboy.

Dude uses smoke screen and spikes to try and avoid police

lucky760 says...

The spikes needed to be like the ones they made on Mythbusters. Those were bent, sharpened hollow tubes and as soon as tires hit those they got shredded, whereas the non-hollow ones just stuck into the tires and self-plugged the holes they created, as what happened here.

John Oliver: Primaries and Caucuses

newtboy says...

No, I don't think I said that. Again, it would be nice, but if she locks it up (not counting super delegates) then Bernie's run as a Democrat is over, as is all hope. I don't hold onto even a shred of hope that he'll sway her policy, no matter what he gets her to say during the election.
She's already been incredibly inconsistent on the minimum wage thing, actually taking 3 positions in one sentence in one debate. Can't trust her.
Tax on investment transactions...you've GOT to be kidding, she'll never consider any such thing, it goes against her own, and her donors interests.
A speed limit on trading info so everyone has an equal chance would work better.
The one you didn't mention is the MOST important in my eyes, and also a non starter from her or them....campaign reform...both finance AND how elections operate from districts to electronic voting machines and everything in between. Without that, we'll never get candidates that will work for us OR fix the system that supports them, or even be able to trust our elections. As I see it, Sanders is our one and only hope of fixing the system, so the only hope of saving the union.

What gave the impression that you think Hillary should drop out is because you are calling for a "debate" at the convention EVEN IF she has it locked up.....

If Meat Eaters Acted Like Vegans

newtboy says...

Please stop pretending the entire farming industry practices the worst possible practices. It's not true and you know it. Yes, those practices do happen, but there are alternatives where the animals enjoy better than natural lives under the care of their farmers. It's analogous to saying no one should have dogs because puppy mills are horrendous places that should be eradicated.
My eggs come from free range chickens with windows in their roomy coop, and they never get turned into meat when they stop laying, nor do male chicks get chipper shredded.
Egg laying hens and milk cows do not get turned into meat for human consumption.
Many dairy farms do not practice ANY of the methods you claim.

If you call all farmers murderers and torturers, and all their customers accomplices, you have called all non vegans murderers and torturers.

Go to the butcher.
Inuit eat meat because it's all they have. Same with many Maasi, who survive on milk and blood from their cattle with no other resource to exploit. Pretty damn good and logical reason IMO, not starving.
I'm waiting on that video.

I used to be a vegetarian, longer than I have been vegan, for nearly 10 years, because I was under the wrong impression of needing protein from eggs, milk and cheese to live healthy.

I came to the conclusion that as a vegetarian I'm still contributing to needless animal suffering, because it turns out that the dairy and egg industries are the two cruelest businesses out of all of them, and even then they are closely tied to meat production.

Male chicks being thrown by the bucket load into blenders and grinders because they are no use. The egg laying hens in the dark to save electricity costs, inside cages where they cannot move, or have fencing for a floor. Wings clipped, beaks chopped or burnt off. When they stop laying or collapse from exhaustion they get killed for meat anyway.

It's the same for the dairy industry, horns cut or burnt off, if they're born male they get turned into veal. Female cows constantly impregnanted to force milk production until they stop or collapse, then get turned into meat anyway.

I don't think I've called anyone a murderer, torturer or rapist. But people seem to love telling me that I do.

If anything I would be calling you an accomplice, since I doubt you are the one doing it. I wouldn't be doing it to make myself feel better, I'd be doing it because it's true. You're paying someone else to torture, and kill totally unnecessarily - There is no reason to eat any animal product for the majority of people on this planet.

I've put this out there in the past, and it still counts - if anyone can give me one good logical reason to eat any animal product, I'll eat a raw bloody steak on youtube.

The Public gives Jimmy What for on Climate Crisis

ChaosEngine says...

Regarding the last point around Einstein vs 97%.

He is absolutely right about that. If you are right, then it doesn't matter how many scientists are against you, as long as the evidence supports your theory.

Which in Einsteins case, it did (and still does nearly a century later... yay gravitational waves!).

Unfortunately, the problem here is that the evidence OVERWHELMING supports AGW. So, if you're going to disagree with that, you better a) be an expert in your field and b) have some pretty compelling evidence to support you.

What's that? The people who object to climate change don't actually understand the science and haven't got a shred of evidence to back up their nonsense? Quelle surprise....

Apple is the Patriot

dannym3141 jokingly says...

Sure that's a great idea.

I tell you what, why i don't i become EVERYTHING and solve ALL of the world's problems at once? I can solve international tax law by becoming a politician, then i can solve world hunger by becoming head of monsanto, then i can cure cancer by becoming head of McMillan.

That's how problems are solved right? I mean, looking back through history some of our greatest achievements in quality of life were introduced just that same way right? RIGHT? Like when MLK became president to stop racism?

I guess when unions formed and brought about sick pay, working hours, holiday, contracts, safety at work, minimum wage and EVERYTHING else, it was really because one individual person became Prime Minister over here and changed it all. Nothing to do with people gathering together to make the change they want to see.

Oh wait, it turns out you're completely and totally wrong. That would probably be embarrassing for you if you had a shred of self awareness.

Perhaps you'd like to engage your brain before addressing the keyboard? You might also then realise that you have no idea how much i'll pay in tax in my lifetime, nor my contributions to society through other means that money can't buy.

But i tell you what, next time that person working at the supermarket mans the Samaritans hotline and talks someone down from suicide, or a junior doctor saves 3 lives, or a researcher investigates something that leads to a cancer cure, or a cop stops a tragedy...... or a school teacher stands up for a kid being abused at home, or inspires someone to become a doctor, or a local baker gives away food to homeless people every night........ you can go and tell them that they're losers and they will never contribute as much to society as a bunch of rich men who pay people to make phones for them and who pay less ACTUAL (not percentage) tax than many of their own working class employees.

I'll take the loser cheapshot in good faith, you were so off the mark with everything else in your comment that it's actually an endorsement coming from someone like you.

Trancecoach said:

Haha! First of all, they are tax avoiders, not tax dodgers. Secondly, if you don't like it, why don't you work your way up at Apple and change the company from the inside? Or become a legislator and change the law. See if you can get them to pay whatever version of "fair share" you think they "should." (We all know you won't because, if you did, you wouldn't be using a platform or a device created by companies that don't care about what you think their "fair share" of taxes should be.) But, hey, go ahead and "boycott" Apple and other companies to "protest" their failure to adopt your ideas and definitions of "fair shares." See how far that gets you. I'll continue to buy their products and support them.

And meanwhile, the vilified "millionaires and billionaires" will continue to pay far more in taxes than you ever will (currently 44% of federal taxes while the bottom 45% don't pay anything at all) -- just so we're clear on who contributes little to nothing at all and is merely a consumer/loser.

An Unfortunate History of White Actors Playing Other Races

Payback says...

That Short Circuit character made me cringe when I first saw it, if for no other reason than the actor was complete shit even without the accent.

I also firmly believe some of these HAD to be played by whites as no one with a shred of self respect would play the character the way the director obviously wanted if they were that race...

We must be buying different types. This one was fairly similar, except a little bit nicer than the shredded pizza topping type ham.

That's funny. I would never buy it for myself because it tastes far too little like the shredded meat it's replacing.
