12 Year Old Jacob Barnett Teaches Us Calculus 2 Technique

westy says...

"Find a 12 year old and have him regurgitate this" That wasn't my point I realize statistically there are not many people his age that learn this or could repeat it back thats not what im saying at all.

The point is if you are making a video describing how something works Its better to explain why things are why they are or you are doing nothing to help other people , you are accentually just showing of that u know something which was my point about this video in that it is a video of a kid showing of they know something which is utterly useless and exactly the same as a kid showing of they speek another language or can program well ( arguably skills that require the same amount of intellect) , its been known for a long time that some kids can do stuff that is often thought to complex for kids and only thought that adults can do it so there is not realy much of intrest of this video to the casual viewer.

"Furthermore, why are you admitting that you are so ignorant about math? That's not a good thing...it shouldn't be a nonchalant admission that somebody isn't even willing to try and understand the language of the universe"

Thats a moronic thing to say do you play the peano? speak multiple languages ? program in multiple languages? CAN YOU NOT PAINT PHOTO REAL IMAGES ? DON'T YOU KNOW HOW TO DO CINEMATIC EFFECTS ? All those skills can potentaily be benoficail to society and help you understand the world better.

How is sumone saying that they are at a lower level of uinderstanding of something negative and how can you then interpret that as them saying math is of no use or that they dont think math is of use ? or that they are not willing to learn it ?

Granted i did write "I dont really know any math" This is not true what i meant was I don't know any of the math thats in this video and am at a very basic level of math. I am intrestead in math in general I am just stupendously dyslexic and find it ridiculously difficult to learn things such as some of the more basic aspects of math and find that all the books and teachers i have had have thought in a way thats not very compatible with my way of learning.

strangely i find it far easer to understand the more complex concepts of math its the Human computing element i struggle with Litraly am missing the component of the brain that can do that lol.

some of the things that got in the way of me learning math at school are rediculously simple , such as when typing numbers into a calculator i would forget what the last number i put in was , or typing in numbers back to front , or looking at the white board and then looking at what i was writing only to have to look back at the board , then u have the fact that i would write 10x slower than anyone else and would be forced to use a pencil. Another issue with math is that you are using the same symbols to describe different things sumone that is maximum dyslexic retarded ( well in my case annyway ) likes to have individual single meaning to each symbol and to be able to see everything as an image in one go not completely fragmented in component parts that make little sense.

I am quite happy to pootel along with a reasonably basic working knowlage of math and focus my time on things that come more naturally to me , I'm sure eventually i will come across a good teacher of math or sum-one that has developed a more visual way of learning traditionally non visual aspects of math and then I will have another poke at it.

Find a 12 year old and have him regurgitate this. He explains the derivation of integration by parts which is a lot better than most the people I know. I mean when I learned integration by parts, it's not like I had to invent it, I really just had to learn it, and, for all intents and purposes, regurgitate it on the test. Now I know what integration by parts is, and I don't have to reinvent it every time I see it, I just know the skill, by memory...does that make me somebody that doesn't know maths? No.
Furthermore, why are you admitting that you are so ignorant about math? That's not a good thing...it shouldn't be a nonchalant admission that somebody isn't even willing to try and understand the language of the universe. Realy stupid video.
Might as well be a video of a kid that can program just talking as they code something , without explaining things. Or its like a multilingual kid speaking Spanish to English people.
I dont really know any math but it comes across in this video like he is simply regurgitating what would be fairly common or easy to understand math for sum-one that was doing that type of math and he dosent realy do a very good job at actualy exsplaning things other than saying THIS IS THIS BECAUSE THIS IS THIS, Which is fine really cnt expect kids to be good teachers i just dont get why his moron mother is filming it and uploading it on to the internet i guess its here way of gaining self worth.
In some ways i would rather have this than moron parents filming kids doing sports or other activities we could do with a more kids culturally encouraged to be into science.
I know this kid is well known for being good at science/math well beyond his age and i think he has aspergers so its good to encourage him and keep him focused on stuff so he dosent go into his shell. but he has not done annything utterly remarkable and it seems allot of people are embuing him as sumone that will change the world of science , maby he will but at this point in time and you should not put that presure on people or have that exspectation when they are developing as kids. futhar more from what i have read he still has a basic understanding of things that will need to be fleshed out before he can come up with ideas that are of use scentificaly and allot of the fame and promotion of this child is from midea making stuff up and hyping things out of propotion.
I hope he does well and benefits science and does what he enjoys but hope his character is not retardified by his parents or what the midea might do to him.

A Christmas Message From Bill Maher

Payback says...

Money can't buy you happiness, but the lack of it will make you miserable.

Can I ask how being happy for getting free stuff is ramapant consumerism? @littledragon_79 is totally correct, the Black Friday riots are far more indicative of the illness. Black Friday is all about proving your self worth to others by purchasing things. I mean, even Mother Theresa was ecstatic over winning the Nobel prize's $1,000,000 for no other reason than what it meant to her mission.

Also, looking down on people who DON'T have a $23 million net worth who are happy about getting stuff when YOU DO have a $23 million net worth is elitist bullshit.

Holy crap, is her entire self worth tied up in those breasts and that body?

Poor lass probably became horrendously depressed as she got older and lost the looks. Probably tried all sorts of surgery to keep them too and became some disfigured freakish impersonation of her younger self.

So sad

Saturday morning cartoons taught you collectivism! (Politics Talk Post)

Kreegath says...

But I'm not sure the cartoon is saying that anyone should abandon their individuality, that the good of the many always outweigh the good of the few or that being an individual is reckless and selfish. That's just one person's interpretation, namely the writer of the article's. I'm not sure that the cartoon was meant to politically manipulate children, that's also just the interpretation of the writer and inflammatory rethoric. Such wording is more likely to make me think the writer has some axe to grind with the production company than to expose the cartoon as maliciously subversive. To me it reads as if he's simply taken the positive messages the cartoon tried to promote, like the importance of friendship and working together, and just spun it to show it in a negative light. I'm sure there's just as much of a case to be made there about how each of the characters is uniquely individual in the series and how you can be different from everyone and still get along. After all, being an individual doesn't mean one has to forfeit all forms of cooperation with others.

You can spin just about anything negatively, but that doesn't mean that children will pick up on it and lose their sense of self-worth. More likely than not, they'll pick up on the larger, highlighted and predominant themes of the show. Like you said, He-man had to take time out of the cartoon to sit down and really illustrate why smoking was bad, and that didn't make you avoid the cigs.
The guilt you felt from starting to smoke, however, could have come from a hundred different places, and probably did. I don't think the only reason for those feelings was from the ending of a cartoon episode you saw as a child, and I don't think you do either. Smoking has been somewhat of a social taboo for a long time, and even people who do it know that it's bad for them and that they'd be better off quitting. That's something kids are much more likely to pick up on.

then you are directly affected.
live near other people?neighbors perhaps?
then you are indirectly affected.
the indoctrination and immersion of pop culture in america is at saturation point.
most americans (maybe not you,but the majority) define their self worth by what they own and what they can buy.a citizens social worth is based on his ability to purchase, consume and keep this economy afloat and this is re-enforced by our media, schools and other social institutions.it is as insidious as it is subtle.
so yeah, you are affected even if you wish to believe you are not.

25 Random things about me... (Blog Entry by youdiejoe)

demon_ix says...

1. I'm an Atheist Jew, and that is not an oxymoron.

2. I lived in Corvallis, Oregon for about 2 years when I was 3 years old. I don't remember speaking English at the time, but the language came very naturally to me in school and I still have a somewhat American accent. I even catch myself thinking in English when speaking Hebrew.

3. In grade school I used to read ahead of the class and interrupt the teachers with questions so much that the school wanted to transfer me to a special (retarded) class. My mother insisted on a psychological evaluation that determined I was bored.

4. I'm addicted to an online game that takes almost all of my free time (guess which). I've quit and relapsed three times already. I'm also becoming addicted to an online video sharing community, but that's neither as time-consuming nor a problem IMO.

5. I lost touch with almost all of my high-school friends other than two. Other than family, those are the only people I talk to.

6. I have never finished anything that I wasn't forced to finish in my entire life. This includes university studies, projects at work and silly things like cleaning up my own apartment.

7. I am constantly tired. Have been since I can remember. After 3 cups of coffee I feel like a curtain that covers my eyes normally is gone.

8. I have no sense of self worth. That is to say, I believe that I am less than every other person, whether I know them or not. It makes me very persuadable and very vulnerable to criticism, which I usually take very personally, even if it's not meant that way.

9. I berate myself all the time. I'm doing it right now, telling myself to stop writing this pathetic post about what a pathetic person I am (considering how my imaginary problems are dwarfed by the post above mine).

10. I went to a therapy session once, but was very uncooperative.

11. I can't tell anybody else pretty much all of what I've written here already. The only reason I can do it here is because what's staring back at me is a LCD monitor.

12. I think about ending my life pretty much constantly. It's usually strongest before I go to sleep. It's been like this since I was 16 or so. I have never attempted suicide, I'm not suicidal as far as I know, and this isn't a cry for help.

13. I have never taken any kind of drug, aside for antibiotics and other common medicine. As far as I know, I've never been high.

14. I was in a scooter vs. scooter accident exactly three months ago. The other guy ran a red light and smashed into my vehicle at about 50 mph. I walked away with a slight pain in my right hand, he had several injuries as a result. In a related note, I also own a car now, and am attempting to sell my scooter.

15. I work as the sole IT guy for a tiny web hosting / site building company. It's barely enough work to keep me occupied during the day.

16. I have an American private pilot license from 2006 (single engine land). I haven't flown since, but that's because of the nature of recreational flight in Israel.

17. I am afraid of heights. Happens when I rappel or stand on high places without a safety rail. Doesn't affect me at all when flying.

18. I commonly engage in software/music/video piracy, but as a leecher, not a seeder.

19. I think about relocating to a different country a lot, but it's closer to my random thing #12 than it is an actual desire to move.

20. I am one of those people that ruin the movie-going experience for other people. I constantly find silly things wrong with movies or tv shows and point them out. I do this in a very hypocritical way, since I ignore such flaws in movies I like.

21. I suspect I have hypothyroidism, but my blood tests disagree.

22. I have no items that I would miss specifically if I had to part with them suddenly.

23. I wake up with two separate alarms, both on the other side of the room to force me to get out of bed to turn them off, but I still go back to sleep most of the time and end up being late for work. I sometimes even have no memory of turning off either alarm.

24. I have never been in a fight.

25. My favorite food is a pizza with green olives.

Personal Video of the Rifleman at Presidential Rally

spoco2 says...

>> ^quantumushroom:
There will always be statists OUTRAGED that the people who actually earn the money should want to keep it! Never understood that, or will.

It's almost not worth having any discourse with you then.

Did not the people who earn the money benefit from government funded amenities, likes schools, roads, health care etc. ?

If they did not then they were already born into a family that could afford to do everything privately... but for how many generations can you go back on a currently rich family to find a point where they came from working stock who used public infrastructure to help them up?

See, in my mind, we need to provide as much as we can to allow the poor and uneducated to become educated, become skilled, become valuable, EARN an income and start contributing to society. By doing so we therefore start having a lot more self worth, a lot better family environment and a greater starting point for their children, and their children's children.

You great a self servicing system whereby you continually reduce the number of poor and destitute who need help from others.

YOUR mindset is that nothing should be provided to anyone, and everyone can get a great job if they just work hard enough. Really? So how do those people afford somewhere to live, an education, health care etc. while becoming skilled enough to become productive?

My mindset is that if you have enough money to be living comfortably and doing well for yourself and your family then why the F*CK not be giving some of that back to the community that gave you a chance if you needed it, and is giving a chance for less people to be reliant on support as a whole.

Upset because there's corruption in endeavors the government is supposed to spend money on (like defense) the statist would rather see money "wasted" on endeavors the government has no legitimate role in providing (health care, government schools, price controls).

What? Seriously, you don't think a government should provide health care or EDUF*CKINGCATION? Well, I write you completely off then. If you think that education should be a privately run endeavor, then you are a fully, and completely lost cause. If you can't see how running schools as profitable enterprises by private firms with private interests is a BAD IDEA, then, well, I just cannot understand that mindset.

Ditto with healthcare

And I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to in regards to price controls (unless you mean the subsidies for farmers etc.), so I'll leave that alone.

Which is dumber, supporting a government big enough to give you everything you want, or acting surprised when it takes away everything you have?

Or, perhaps believing that private enterprise has your best interest at heart and that somehow poor people can lift themselves up by their bootstraps through the goodness of private firms. Yeah, that's going to happen.

Stop with this 'I have money, I'm doing fine, I work hard, man I wish I didn't have to give some of MY MY MY hard earned money for those lazy poor people' mentality. It's selfish, lacking in any empathy at all, and just so narrow minded it sickens others.

Why America Is Fucked

enoch says...

fuckin-A right on man!
where is the sense of community?the sense of doing a good job?being better at something, not just for your own advancement but for those who help and assist you?
this guy's obvious exasperation at the total lack of, not only perspective but PRIDE in what you do is almost palpable.
this nation has become a nation of selfish twats who have bought into the bogus fodder they have been sold that somehow THEY are special and therefore more deserving of the next guy.this promotes a "fuck you,its MINE" mentality.
that somehow the car they drive, the house they cant afford, the job they feel entitled to, is an accurate representation of who they are as a person.they have put their entire self-worth into the things they OWN.
one day they are going to wake up and realize three things:
1.dont do that, makes you look like a shallow twat.
2.you wasted twenty years chasing a dream of fulfillment and happiness that was created by pepsi and budweiser commercials.
3.the people that truly cared for you never predicated their love for you by the things you owned,or what you could do for them.it was those OTHER people that used you, just like you used others to collect more crap to ease your fears of failure.a definition of failure i might add, that was perpetuated by the very institutions seeking to enslave you.

when will the average american realize that their greatest asset is the person next to them?that doing a good job for prides sake is a satisfaction worth having?that some arbitrary scale of failure is solely based on your ability to be a good consumer?that the scale ITSELF is an indoctrinated propaganda program that runs 24/7 on every cable tv channel?
when??

Oral Sex is the New Kiss Goodnight

RedSky says...

Honestly so what? As long as they use condoms I couldn't care less. Just because older generations have monogamous religious preconceptions on sex doesn't mean it needs to or ever will be projected on younger generations. That's not to say I think prostitution at a young age is a good thing, but where you're willing to exploit yourself for the kind of petty things that this clip suggests like homework, and if that's even true, then that has to come down to a lack of self confidence, self worth and ultimately bad parenting.
