The only CIA officer to go to jail for torture is...

Stormsinger says...

Personally, if all the "secret services" crashed and burned overnight, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I think we'd be far, far better off if our government was not allowed to keep any activities secret. Maybe we'd be able to reduce the level of corruption to something acceptable, if all the books were open to public review.

I certainly think it perfectly obvious that the real criminals in this case were those that performed and authorized the torture, rather than the one that blew the whistle. YMMV

I'm afraid you too are being naive. As a CIA operative he would -or should have - been aware that there are other ways to expose corruption and illegal behaviour. Ways which would have protected himself, the operative he was outing, and most important his family. My original comment stands. He was naive and stupid. How long do you think the "secret" services would last if all operatives were allowed to reveal classified information whenever they felt inclined to? Am I naive enough to trust the secret services completely? Of course not, but in the present climate they are a necessary evil. We can only hope that the work they do to protect us, outweighs the bad.

Celebrity Encounters (Blog Entry by lucky760)

While waiting for an inaugural party(Clinton's 2nd) to wind down so we could replace the removed office cubicles at a Bank of America branch just off the parade route. I was chilling outside observing all the Secret Service peeps on all the rooftops along with checking out the high class hookers being picked up by their Johns. All of a sudden I saw a familiar woman walking down the sifewalk. I looked real well and noticed her and said "Hello there" with a smile and she smiled back and said "Hi". My coworker said "Who are you talking to Joe?" I told him it was Maria Shriver. He along with the rest of the crew had no idea who she was. So I said Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife. I did work with some dumbass meatbags back then.

Oh puh-leeze, why is this a story? If you write something about the president with "assassinate/assassination" in the same post (let alone clearly wishing it upon him, moreover clearly because of his race) you can bet your buttskin you'll be under secret service watch, and rightly so. I have no sympathy for this shitforbrains whatsoever.

Streisand Effect ftw

The Streisand effect, wherein attempting to cover up something draws more attention to it? Are you saying people don't know Obama is black?

I liked this except I would have liked it more if they would have left out the turntable scratch/dub effects. For fun I decided made a list of all the songs I could identify. Not sure if this means I'm just a Bond fan or have crossed over to Bond nerd.

Leaked Video of Romney at Fundraiser -- You're all moochers!

VoodooV says...

>> ^alcom:

I don't consider people living on < $20,000/y "entitled" or "moochers." I think Mitt needs to look in the mirror and see how his privileged life is simply unattainable by people in these circumstances. They're just getting by. By taxing the most vulnerable segment of society, he is inviting increased crime and fraud in the future. All
If he was serious about paying his "fair share" he'd disclose all those years of tax returns. And his Swiss and Cayman Island bank accounts while he's at it. He's probably avoided much more total tax revenue personally than the Reps stand to get out of that 47%.

You'll never get that kind of perspective out of Mitt. He's one of those people who believes he is one of the chosen few. He seems to honestly believe he was chosen by god. He seems to honestly believe that we all live in a vacuum and he got to where he is on his own merits alone and he had zero assistance.

These things are provably wrong. you can demonstrate that he's just like everyone else, you can demonstrate that he had help from his parents, you can demonstrate that he lives in a nation that has the government-created environment to allow people to succeed.

Mitt lost this election before he even won the primary. Even most republicans know this. They spent 4 years trying to obstruct Obama and hinder American growth just to make him a one term president and they're going to fail. So two things:

1. Obama better be awesome to his Secret Service people because I'm predicting an assassination attempt during the 2nd term.

2. What's going to be interesting to see is the 2016 election. If the rational republicans cannot reclaim their party back from the religious nutbags and the teabaggers and lose the 2016 election as well, then I'm going to say Republicans as a serious party are done. They're going to be relegated to the fringe. I still think a 2nd Civil War in our lifetimes is a serious possibility. And if Republicans are unable to persuade people with words anymore, I suspect elements will resort to other ways of persuading people. It's going to get worse before it gets better.

The whole "secret service" thing seemed a bit overblown to me, having plainclothes security in a place like Disney Land doesn't surprise me in the least.

I wonder if they have those secret service ear pieces in their Mickey Mouse ears, and they put their fingers up to them whenever someone is talking to them.

Romney Introduces his VP as the Next President of the USA

shinyblurry says...

Doesn't seem like a "Saran Palin lite" could dismantle Obamacare and give Obama a thorough drubbing at his own health care summit:

Paul Ryan is a serious contender for VP who can more than hold his own, and picking him is very saavy as it will redirect the national conversation back to the economy and Obamas failed policies. I also feel sorry for Joe Biden when he has to meet him in debate this fall.

>> ^VoodooV:

haha! I have to admit. I didn't catch the flub in the title. I thought it was simply a sift talking about the VP pick. Then I hear Romney introduce him as the president and I go wtf?
and now @budzos's post makes a lot more sense
I dunno though, I think everyone thought Palin was going to be the next candidate. I sure as hell didn't think Romney would come back for more.
But to think Paul is a serious VP or a serious candidate for POTUS in 2016 is a stretch. At best, he's Sarah Palin lite. He may not be the super-gaffe machine that Palin was, but his Ayn Rand worship is just as outdated and outlandish.
When Republicans lose in November, they're going to have to have some serious soul searching. Doubling down on Obama-hate got them nowhere...and it's going to cost them the election just like in 2008. When even McCain had to say enough was enough and defend Obama against the extremist nutbags, that tells you how far gone the right is. I think it's very interesting that we haven't heard a peep out of McCain this cycle. the vitriol is even worse than it was in 2008 and if he had to say enough back then, I can only imagine what he thinks of it now. I'd love to hear his opinion on the birthers.
And in all seriousness, I hope Obama takes good care of his secret service people, it wouldn't shock me in the least if there was an assassination attempt in his second term.

SKYFALL - Official Teaser Trailer

kymbos says...

Look, Casino Royale showed up twenty years of Bond films to be the mindless derivative drivel that they were.

The film reintroduced the darkness that was at the heart of Bond that hasn't been seen, arguably, since the death of Bond's just-married wife at the end of the highly underrated "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (which coincidentally had the best soundtrack of all Bond films). That was in 1969.

Some would contend that Timothy Dalton captured the true essence of Bond's dark moodiness in his too-short stint as Bond in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill - but he had the advantage of actually being able to act, a skill no one could accuse Pierce Brosnan of bringing to the franchise.

I believe that the Bourne films effectively modernised Bond and the franchise was forced to follow, after years of meandering aimlessly with Brosnan whose films retained a misplaced focus on gadgets and 'witty' lines. There is a place for these, but they superseded plot, character and genuine style. Product placement became too much of a cash cow as well (although I hear an agreement has been made to replace Bond's signature martini with Heineken in Skyfall).

Casino Royale returned Bond to his rightful place. Bourne is great, but he's no Bond. Compared to CR, Quantum of Solace was indeed inferior. But Yogi is right - it was way better than every Brosnan Bond film, which were total disappointments to genuine fans.

So there.
