An Intriguing New Gun Safety System

JustSaying says...

Or someone kidnaps your daughter and thanks to your preparedness and special set of skills you realize you're actually Liam Neeson.
This whole guns-for-safety-schtick has been debated online a thousand times. You know what protects you from crime? Tackling the very real social issues like poverty and racism that cause crime.
You have so many guns and yet your crime rate is so shitty. Mass shootings are routine in america. Where are all the good guys with guns to stop the bad guys when you need them?
It's not working. It simply isn't, crunch numbers all you want. Just look at Canada. They have guns. Yet, they seem to live so much safer lives. Is Mexico such a dangerous place because they don't have enough guns? They got the good Heckler&Koch rifles, you know.
You want to fight fights that I say should be avoided in the first place. Fix your social issues and less people will have reasons to try breaking into your home.
Same with the terrorist. Don't just bomb them, disable their ideological rethoric, disable their methods of recruiting.
We have islamic terrorists here in germany. They either try to build bombs (requires actual know-how) or they attack with axes and knives. Something must be working in our favor here. Same can't be said for the citizens of Paris or nightclub visitors in Orlando. They got shot.
The american paranoia is a reaction to an action that can be made far more unlikely to happen. Once you are ready to tackle the issues.
You can bring a fire extinguisher every time you go to the gas station in case a fire breaks out or you can just stop smoking around the gas station.

...Or, someone could break into your home and preparedness can mean the difference between life and death.

But sure. Paranoia. Zombies. Let's go there.

The Tyler Tabor Story

artician says...

Please pass legislation that forbids for-profit companies from supplying life-saving services.

You could also force every employee of a corporation to watch their own company's advertising schtick to understand what is expected of them by their clients.
Such a massive, apathetic disconnect there.

Penn Jillette in a room full of dummies

Very appropriate title.

Eric did mean everyone on camera is a dummy, right? I like Penn, I like his schtick, but the man's an idiot. Teller's the brains. Penn's a Libertarian! QED.

Rashida Jones coaches Stephen on how to be a Feminist

SDGundamX says...

@newtboy

Look, man, I've been watching you dig your grave deeper with every post. I'm not really sure what you're not getting, given the patient explanations everyone has provided. No one is saying you can't want equality for all, but to get equality for all you have to start by helping groups that are clearly NOT equal in society achieve some level of equality.

Ergo, Feminists focus on helping women achieve equality. And let's be clear, when we say equality we're talking about achieving equality with white males, because they are the ones who historically and currently hold the privledged position in Western society.

So, your whole, "But what about men?" schtick is insulting to feminists precisely because men are already better off than women in most areas. Feminists have no obligation to make men's lives--particularly white men's lives--better than they already are. This is not to say white men have no problems or that in some areas (child custody comes to mind) they aren't at a disadvantage. And there are activist groups working towards improvement in these areas. But demanding that feminists work for men's issues shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what feminism is all about.

This reminds me of the whole recent Kit Harington flap, where Kit claimed Hollywood is "sexist" towards men and displayed a similar fundamental misunderstanding of what sexism is. His point was that male actors can be sexually objectified (he refered to being asked to take his shirt off on a photo shoot). But being occasionally objectified is no where near the same thing as the well documented actual sexism that goes on in Hollywood--vastly different paychecks for lead actressess compared to actors, the number and types of nude scenes actressess are asked to do compared to male actors, etc. No one is saying objectification (of either sex) isn't a problem but there's a much bigger problem for women (as usual) than there is for men and that's why there needs to be a group (feminists) advocating for women to tackle these larger problems before getting to the problem of Kit Harington's discomfort at disrobing for the camera.

Honest Trailers - Terminator: Genisys

ulysses1904 says...

I'm a big fan of the first 3 Terminator movies and I watched the first 30 minutes of this before I had to stop watching, it's painful just how bad it was. So much time was taken up recreating scenes from better movies, it's got that self-aware Tarantino stink all over it. I'm embarrassed for Arnold, it's like he was hosting SNL and was there to do parodies of his own schtick.

Avoid this one like a tire in the road.

Fun! I've seen them twice in Vegas, with about 15 years between the two times. Both were great -- their schtick is consistently funny/weird and the music is awesome.

Tina Fey's Takes Off Her Dress - David Letterman

ChaosEngine says...

Tina Fey is great, but I wish she'd stop the whole "I'm plain and unattractive and no man would want me" schtick. It's patently untrue and I know plenty of women half her age who would love to look that good.

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

ChaosEngine says...

Just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean the target of whatever unpleasant activity isn't a "victim". You can be the "victim" of a prank.

And this is more than an inconvenience. Did you actually watch the video? While you could make an argument that some of the comments are relatively innocuous, there are plenty that are downright creepy, and a few even vaguely threatening.

And drop the "poor people" schtick. Being poor is not an excuse to be an asshole. Neither is being rich.

Again, it's about context. I say crass things to my female friends all the time, because I know them. That's fine. Hell, I don't even have a problem with someone getting abused (verbally) at a comedy gig. It's appropriate.

Okay, so a suitable answer to your question, "why should she have to?" Is "because assholes exist, and she'd rather not listen to them."

Victim blaming? Really? No crime was committed. These men are well within their rights. You aren't a victim whenever someone does something you'd rather they didn't do. Laws exist to delineate when you are being victimized, and when you are being inconvenienced. Everything in this video falls decidedly into the latter category. Assholes inconvenience me all the time. I don't make a video imploring that we stop assholery. That would be dumb. Assholes won't listen. If they listened, they wouldn't be assholes. I just take reasonable measures to avoid dealing with it. In this case, if she really hates talking to poor people, she could just wear earbuds.

Personally I'd prefer a society without fences or earbuds. The fact is, most of those guys could be pretty cool, if crass as all get out. Personally I don't have a problem with crass. Crass can be funny. It might be offensive, but being offended is merely an inconvenience. Crassness by itself isn't dangerous.

Shit Steve Harvey says

Screamingabyss says...

Steve probably thinks he's badass for his antiquated, thinly veiled bigotry. One thing anyone with a moral compass (I prefer compass to barometer) needs to understand is that these days being an asshole is a schtick. Let's see this for what it is. Assholes spouting received morality as a schtick should not be surprising or insulting. They get paid for it, the other assholes applaud them and they get to feel superior. Circle jerk. Time to move on people.

Shit Steve Harvey says

so like Steve you're creating a schtick out of your prejudice. Here's some liberalism for you: "More trees less assholes."

I have just found out that there are a ton of liberal people on videosift. His point of view is just as valid as you left-wing dorks. He makes perfect sense to me.

He's saying that a moral compass without a divine being behind that compass is risky. That's all he's saying.

I hate the word "homophobic." I'm not homophobic. I'm homoadverse. I'm not an Islamaphobe, I'm Islamicadverse. I'm not afraid of gays, I just don't like them.

I don't care if you're offended or not. That's your perogative.
