Man takes off, flies and lands airplane - with no power.

bigbikeman says...

I don't know. Doesn't seem overly foolish to me: it is a plane he's using, not a schoolbus. And he's not counting on his engine, just the physics and the known flight characteristics of his aicraft....which he probably knows like the back of his hand. Plus a skilled pilot should be able to land a plane with no power.

He picked a clear day, presumably little to no wind, and knew the area (I'm also going to assume he checked his takeoff slope for anything that would really mess him up). His landing zone was massive...lots of room for error. The takeoff was a bit weird, but running a plane down a hill to takeoff isn't unheard of either (bush pilots with ski landing gear do this all the time on glaciers for instance, albeit under power)

Actually, having flown with a few bush pilots myself, but almost seems a bit tame...those guys are generally nuts, and regularly fly in conditions that make this look like a walk in the park. ;-)

For the old-timers: Should Choggie be allowed back in the sift? (User Poll by gwiz665)

gwiz665 says...

I think it is alarming that people get so up in arms about me making that poll. You can always just vote no? It's a only gauge to figure out what people think.. it's not like it's binding or anything.

Furthermore, I made the poll because swampgirl never got around to it and with the newest banning, so it seemed like an opportune time to do it.

I obviously didn't experience his presence as badly as some of you did, but why are you all of a sudden being all rass-ma-tass on my ass for this poll?

Ignore is there for a reason, if you want to use it. The only thing I thought was necessary was to strip him of his powers (which we can basically do with hobble now), because he misused his powers.

Personally I have no contact with choggie and I have no real interest in it either. When this matter is resolved, whichever outcome, I will not bring this up again, unless he does break rules again and should be ousted. I'm not arguing FOR him, I'm arguing from the rules of the sift. Bringing attention to problematic issues should not be stigmatized, or have you such short memories?

>> ^blankfist:
>> ^gwiz665:

If you agree his "original" ban was justified, then why are you arguing in favor of repealing it? Furthermore I don't understand what you're intending by contrasting "personal ban" and "account ban".
Dag banned the person, not just the account. It wouldn't make sense otherwise. His behavior (that of the person) was destructive and vindictive to the site. What good would it do any of us to ban his account and allow him back to one day do it again?

Because banning the person was the wrong thing to do. He should have banned the choggie account and let him start over, until he broke the rules on the new one.

I'm not arguing for giving him his old account back, I'm arguing that he should be allowed to make a new account if he wants and have a chance to behave on that. If he can't then another ban can be in order. And if this happens a number of times, then, finally, a ban on his person would be in order.

He got capital punishment for a lot of speeding tickets and reckless driving - I think that's wrong.

For the old-timers? No. For everyone. VS is not for the people who used to come here, it's for the people who come here now.
choggie is often portrayed as some sort of mad genius... like the Unabomber only less articulate and vastly more destructive.
For those who think we should resurrect choggie in any form: Why?
I concur that his video selection was interesting and unique, but there are lots of people who post interesting and unique videos. Not many people vote for them. choggie was successful because he got here early and didn't have to compete for views the way we all do now.
I disagree that he had anything interesting to say and, if he did, nobody could decipher it. Speaking in tongues does not make him a genius. If you miss choggie's "wisdom", volunteer as an aide on a schoolbus. Those kids call each other "fuckers" and talk about masturbation and circle-jerks left and right. You'll be bathing in choggiesque enlightenment for hours a day, 5 days a week.
If choggie really wants to return, let him email dag and make his case.

You are of course correct that this poll is for everyone, my quip was merely reflecting on that fact that no one who's been here for less than a year know anything of him, other than old comments.

As far as I know, choggie did return for a while on the user Sallyjune, which to my understanding dag knew about and left alone, because he behaved (I may be mistaken, so please correct me if this is wrong). This is essentially a unwritten pardon, but this account was instabanned by blankfist when he found out it was choggie behind the veil. (For the record, I didn't know it was him until after the ban and after the comment I made on the profile.) That was probably the first time the seed of this poll started for me.

I get an uncomfortable feeling when people (especially you, freedom-loving blankfist) go around banning accounts that have not broken any rules. If the user had made any threats or personal attacks or whatever, there would be a reason, but I don't think that the way it works now is a good one. We should only ban for "gross violations" of the sift guidelines, otherwise it should be up to admins to do it.

What is your drug of choice? (User Poll by Throbbin)

Yes I consider myself quite a psychonaut. I do thoroughly research these drugs before use and consider myself a responsible drug user. I only use these psychedelics very infrequently, like once every 3 months or so. They are quite self limiting.

No offense...but you are a responsible drug user like Evil Knievel is a responsible motorist.

Care to give any good arguments in support of that statement? Do your research and you will see that none of these drugs have proven harmful in moderation in any scientific test done upon them. Many psychedelic drugs have been responsibly used in psychiatric trials with little to no ill effects.
From my list I bet alcohol and the tobacco part of wacky tabacky have done the most damage to me.

I DID say no offense...but since you want some clarification...

Evil Knievel considers himself quite a motorist. He thoroughly researches his stunts before he performs them, much like you research your drugs. Evil Knievel only performs his stunts very infrequently, just like you. Evil Knievel's stunts are very self-limiting, just like your drug experiences.

I would also add that on a relative scale, I would equate my ganja use to a leisurely country drive, while I would equate your lsd and benzodiaphragm trips to jumping over 12 flaming schoolbuses on a motorcycle.

And when I said no offense, I did mean it. So chill the fuck out.

Yea how are you going to post a poll and honest forum for discussion and then blast somebody for their answer? Sounds pretty effed up to me. So, no offense, but I think you just posted this poll so that you can talk about that one puff you took while you were at the "Pink Floyd Reunion Tour"

Not sure how to respond to this one...if we are looking for "honest discussion" why are you "blasting" me for my humourous response?

I never liked Pink Floyd.

So chill the fuck out.

That kind of judgement really turns me off.
You don't know all the answers and your way isn't the only way.
Some of us need drugs and you can scoff at that all you want, and we need them primarily to put up with people who think like you.

No one has the right to not be offended.

No, I DON'T know all the answers. I KNOW my way isn't the only way. I;m not scoffing at anyone (trust me, I need my drugs sometimes too).

You have no idea how I think.

So chill the fuck out.

>> ^cybrbeast:
I wouldn't go as far as to say that I need these drugs. I need these drugs as bad as I need a holiday or as much as I need time to relax, play a game, read a book, and surf the web. None of these activities are vital, though all enrich my life to a certain degree. And I would say that some of the experiences drugs have given me, rank amongst the most meaningful and profound in my life. It's a great way to explore and ponder the workings of one's own psyche.

That's a very nice way of putting it. I agree wholeheartedly.

So chill the fuck out.

Fantastic Voyage Trailer (1966)

Stupid In America (40 min)

sometimes says...

Markets lead to selling people the cheapest, most low-grade swill at a "good" price. (MickeyD's anyone?)
They also lead to luxury items for the wealthy, and funneling disproportionate ammounts of money to a small number of people. Once you add in stock markets, performance becomes measured not on the quality of the product, but on the ability to make shareholders rich.

The No Child Behind initiative only offers punishment to bad schools, and no incentives. This encourages teaching to the test. Many of the people pushing for private school vouchers are involved in the private school industry and/or companies that come in and set up Charter schools.

I personally have experienced some really bad teachers. Also, teacher's pay is generally pertty uninspiring considering all the hurdles one must face to become a teacher. stat I found says 2003 it was $47,000. It does seem that there should be incentives and threats for teachers. Students face rewards and punishments for achievement in schools, but teachers rarely do.

Tax incentives are a terrible idea. More beaurocracy, and they benefit those who pay more taxes than those who pay less. a $5000 tax break does little for someone below the poverty line who only pays a few hundred in taxes.

Most voucher programs I've seen give the parent a few grand. This is useless to someone who can't afford to pay for the rest of the cost to go to private schools. What this does, is give those who can almost afford private schools that extra bump, and gives a bonus to the weathy who can easily afford private schools.

But it seems like a terrible idea to just ship kids off to annother school when their's underperforms and is shut down. an hour commute on a schoolbus seems like a GREAT idea.

Health care is annother disaster of market forces. The executives at many of the mega-sized heath care institutions in the US make up to 1000 times as much as a neurosurgeon.

I've never seen the army hold a bake sale.

kids are swarmed with vastly more stimulation today than a few decares ago. It's no wonder that a school system based on rural levels of stimulus is failing in this age of massively targeted advertizing campaigns. Consider the Olson twins who built a huge empire targeting and stimulating pre-teen girls.

Public schools generally encourage rote memorization, and learing through repitition. I went through school knowing more about the subjects than many of the teachers. I had parents who cared, and tought me many subjects before I even started school. I recall clearly being annoyed by molasses pace of kindergarten and 1st grade. I was doing 2 column math problems, while some of my fellow cretins classmates were reciting out loud "a straight line is fun, and now you've made a one" when they were struggling to learn to simply write numbers. By the time I hit middle school, the education system had taught me that mediocraty was an ideal to strive for. If I excelled, they didn't know what to do with me, and would give me more of the same pointless tedious repititious busywork. So I coasted through most classes, getting C grades in the dull ones, and A grades in the interesting ones. Mostly I would sketch in class, skip most homework, and ace the tests, which were easy. A quick skim of the reading assignment was really all that I needed.
