As an NZ resident, I am morally obliged to point out that Australia is a horrible place populated by criminals and terrible rugby teams, but I did live there for two years and in reality, it's not actually that bad.

Yes, their government are a shower of complete dickheads both in their own right and in the fact that they have their collective head shoved so far up Americas arse they can practically see the back of uncle sams tonsils. The immigration policy is pretty much barbaric and they seem hellbent on ruining the country as fast as humanly possible. And I haven't even gotten started on how unbelievably racist the country as a whole is (this is a country that only got rid of it's "White Australia Policy" in the 70s).

Border security, while they can be complete arseholes are not nearly as bad as they're portrayed on those TV shows. They do have a lot of idiots flouting the biosecurity laws (Johnny Depp is the least of their problems), but in general as long as you don't make the mistake of not being white, they're far more interested in any fruit you might have than any bills with coke on them. (side note: don't bring cash to Australia, almost every transaction is electronic there).

But the country itself has some great things going for it. Some of the scenery is amazing, the parts of the reef that aren't bleached are stunning, the food in the cities is amazing (as is the coffee, especially in Melbourne and Sydney).

There are some schools like this in Germany as well. Usually children that have issues like attention deficit disorder or do not fit into a normal school (problem child) will attend to such a "Forest school" (Waldschule). There are studies that it benefits development as the change in scenery from the busy city life helps the children adjust. It is definitely not very common and children still need to attend regular classes.

To say it has a flair of "anti science" is a bit far fetched as these schools often teach a lot about the local flora and fauna, do stuff like looking at water samples under a microscope or take earth probes. Sure it is not super scientific, it probably compares to what most kids would do as boy scouts - except it's part of the school's education program. For some kids this approach is better at fueling their scientific curiosity than in a regular school environment where they have many other issues to deal with.

Scenery is nice too.

I was certain this had been speeded up the first time I watched it, but after a couple more views I think it's the jolting that makes it looks impossibly fast. If you watch but only focus on the upper part and on the scenery it merely looks stupidly, dangerously fast.

As for the trail... yeah, not for me. I could see the appeal if the course was much less lethal and the goal wasn't speed, but hey, each to their own. Does seem like a lot of work to build for the dozen or so people who can survive it though.

Liked the scenery and scale. After "my sister has it" I thought of posting a snarky comment about STD. But then, at 1:35 I went all 10 year old again. *doublepromote, *doublequality.

Ten percent Devil's advocate here and ninety percent real: I'd be interested in the opposite of this. Driving in town (especially here in Thailand where drivers are completely insane, but really anywhere) annoys me / raises my blood pressure. But highway roadtrips are actually rather fun, nice scenery and fun roads. So a whole lot of the time, if I had to choose one or the other, I'd take the highway bits and let the auto-drive handle traffic and stop lights.

The progress shown here is impressive, but overall I think that things will only get really useful when the car can handle as much (or as little) of the drive as you want it to, all the way on up to driving 100% of the way from driveway to parking at the destination.

Yes, semi impressive, but static scenes are in the end static. These are useful for architectural groups and the like to show off stuff. Virtual builds for a client to walk through.

For gaming, one needs to see the scene in a game like state with action going on, and high polygon models moving in and around the high polygon scenery. There is where we get our real test.

Still pretty, and we are getting closer and closer to near realistic stuff rendering out in real time.

"Chinhyakkei" is a great show. Literally translated it means "Rare Scenes." Every week they invite people from around Japan to submit stories or scenery that is unusual or outright bizarre. A TV crew goes out to confirm and record it and then a panel of guest celebrities vote on which is the strangest submission. I think you get some prize money if the one you submit is voted most unusual. Some things I've seen on the show:
- A bicycle vending machine
- A parking lot where you pay the parking fee using one of those old-school vacuum tube conveyor systems
- The man with the longest mole whisker in Japan
- A house shaped like a soccer ball

Frankly I'm kind of surprised more clips from the show haven't ended up here in the wtf channel.

Another ff I want to play, but you know, its kind of the first time the graphics are a "been there, done that". FF13 really raised the bar in doing excellent quality cinematic in real time, and square has gotten real good at making their worlds look good on low end hardware (ff10 pulls off a lot of tricks to make distant scenery look complex). If there was anything that stood out in this it was the trees actually looked kinda crappy.

The sad part is it will be a decade before we see this on the master PC with HBAO+.
