Magic Mushrooms May Cure Depression

AeroMechanical says...

I believe there could be something to this. I've heard the same thing about other hallucinogens in previous studies (though that was years ago, and nothing came of it). It's interesting stuff, I'd guess sort of like a chemical electroshock therapy. From the detailed explanation I got from a very, very close friend who used hallucinogens in his younger years, there definitely did seem to be an effect sort of like throwing the reset switch in the brain that lasted for a good while after the trip itself was over.

Of course, cocaine, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, alcohol and opiates also "cure" depression. So it's pretty complicated in practice.

Although I love the idea of the chaos and "resetting" of the system that a 3rd party run by Bernie would cause, the stakes are too high.

Splitting the Dem vote through 3rd party campaign hands the election to Trump. If Trump gets elected there's a possibility he could be nominating up to 4 Supreme Court justices during his term. This could honestly be the start of the dissolution of the US. I don't want that to happen. I'd like to come back someday.

I'll be absentee voting against Trump.

But V.P. for whom? At this point, Clinton has said more disparaging, disrespectful, dismissive things about him than Trump has. In fact, Trump has actually said a few nice things about Bernie (and called him Crazy Bernie). That said...a Trump Sanders ticket might just kill a Trump candidacy, so I could support that...it won't happen though.

What I really hope for at this point is that he'll run as an independent after he gets hosed at the convention, and with Warren as his V.P. Maybe I'm wrong, but it feels to me that she has such credibility with all but staunch Republicans that they might have a chance of winning....and then we would have at least one branch of government not under either party's thumb. I get that it's a pipe dream, but a newt can dream, can't he? It does seem like both parties are doing their best to push the nation into electing a third party into power....or better, no party.

Okay... so I haven't paid much attention to the X-Men movies, I know there was sort of a reset at some point between one of these or Wolverine... what do I need to watch to catch up before this one?

Last Week Tonight: Encryption

You're right, the FBI did reset the iCloud backup password on the phone, which Apple claimed was the easiest way to get at the data without any new software needing to be written. Who knows if they're being honest, but the FBI now says that wouldn't have worked anyway.

Chaucer said:

I'm pretty sure the FBI fucked up on this one and messed with the phone before giving it to Apple. As mentioned in the piece, Apple can give the FBI the iCloud backup data. From what I understand, the FBI started to mess with the phone and Apple can no longer force the backup of the phone.

Street Fighter 2 Break Down - The Origin of Fighting Games

So many good memories...

I remember learning the Guile heavy kick glitch that locked up the game and required a board reset. I used it occasionally when someone was being a dick with ken and his op cross-up kick combo over and over.

On top of all this, according to several sources, including Edward Snowden, the FBI already have the ability to reset the number of attempts to unlock the phone. Here's an ACLU post about it:
https://www.aclu.org/blog/free-future/one-fbis-major-claims-iphone-case-fraudulent

According to the article, if there are too many attempts to unlock, the data on the phone doesn't get deleted, just the key to unlock that data. It's possible (and not all that difficult for an organisation like the FBI) to take a copy of the key ahead of time, and restore that key if they cause it to be wiped.

The money and manpower that have already gone into this case would easily cover the effort to go through this process. For those of you so inclined, this raises the question (and obvious answer) of why would the FBI go to so much bother to force apple to do it. You don't get a locked mass-murderer's phone and public support like this too often.

I've been watching for a good counter to that claim since I read it about a week ago, and haven't seen one. Anyone out there able to enlighten me?

Apple is the Patriot

Mordhaus says...

Well, I left the company in 2012, so I had to double-check with a friend that still works there. Apparently the situation is that while they can reset the password limit, it will still do the auto-erase if you reach the attempt limit.

So in the case of any iPhone running the latest OS, the data would be non-retrievable. He also told me that they plan to remove the option to reset the password limit completely in the next version, meaning that if you screw up enough times, it is an auto-erase and nothing can be done.

I can only imagine how the support call is going to go the first time they have to tell the customer that.

newtboy said:

I understand that what you say is true, but do they unlock phones with this OS, or specific security, or just older phones that don't have the auto erase feature built in? They've made the case that this is a new thing, brought about by their new attempt to make it impossible for even them to unlock phones in an effort to get around the warrants, knowing they'll sell more phones if those phones can't be 'cracked', even with a warrant. IF that's true, this is a new case and not the same as the phones they 'cracked' in the past.

More info for you on this. I just sifted a video and it reverted to the Light theme again. This seems to happen whenever I sift a video; it resets my local(?) preferences or something. Seems like a bug to me, and thought you'd want to know!

Everything We Think We Know About Addiction Is Wrong

shagen454 says...

Wow, powerful video. I think this is why certain psychedelics, can (can) help people with addictions or even people with simple obsessions (porno, video games, etc). They have the potential to temporarily exit the cage for self reflection or experience outside of it. Some of the more powerful ones (iboga, ayahuasca) really physiologically reset the afflicted receptor sites - and much much more.

I agree whole-heartily that the way that the US handles drug addiction, mental illness & criminality are completely out of whack. Implying that the direct parallels between those subjects are ignorance (or taboo), incarceration & the lack of clear, precise scientifically proven reformation.

That must be why WordLens disappeared from my phone. I reset my phone the other day and WordLens was the only app that didn't automatically reinstall.

Magician Shin Lim Fools Penn and Teller

kceaton1 says...

There were a lot of different tricks in there. A part of me really wonders if the mat on the table is a "printer/scanner" and that "marker" is extremely important. There may be a time-released chemical that helps all of this go down (meanwhile he may actually have a small printer on his body somewhere). When the smoke appears that is when the "card" is doing it's chemical thing (as you could smother one card with this chemical making it fully black, but then the printer could change the chemical pattern again as it is scanned and therefore reset the card with the other signature...).

The truth is, I have no idea how it was done, but I think what he is wearing (and possibly what is underneath--not to mention the pockets that are very hard to determine their location or size), possible chemical reactions used in a few different ways, a slim printer, and a slim scanner. Plus all of the sleight of hand tricks you did or did not catch...

If true, he used some fairly complicated technological prowess, besides his agility to get this done. But, for ages untold the creations made and used by magicians are just as important sometimes as the act.

This would also be THE perfect trick to give Penn & Teller the slip, as they may have never ran across anything like this (I've run into tech that could easily do lots of this--scanner through things, etc; it just depends on what is in that pen exactly...think of it kind of like invisible ink, but it need not stay that way and it more than likely can be made to "dissolve" as some sort of inert gas).

Everything was done here flawlessly, even the music feed into the act making it harder to catch.

Phew, that is long enough and I may only have 50% or so right on this one.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Transgender Rights

As for me being a bullying hypocrite..

Bullying.. yes.

Hypocrite.. no.

I intentionally give you and lantern shit for two reasons:

1. You deserve it cause you're bigoted, jerkface, racists that don't bring anything to these discussions but hatred for minorities of any kind.

Taste of your own medicine, as it were.

2. To attempt to create a paradox SOO befuddling for your conserv-o-brains.. it's causes a major reset where you finally realize..

"Wow, okay. Everyone here DOES want to have an honest open debate with me.
One where they consider my difference of opinion to be yet another spice in this weird discussion gumbo we're all apart of..

And the only thing I have to do is remain civil, logically consistent, and admit my biases when I'm completely off base/out of my element.

Wow.. that sounds SUPER easy and a much more enjoyable way to live my life!"

...buuuuut..

Since that's 2nd bit's NEVER going to happen.

And you're only here to stir shit.

No it's not hypocritical to want you removed from this particular society.

Just like any other troublemaker in the large society.

You know, like how people who break the social contract get ostracized, marginalized, ridiculed, imprisoned, etc. etc.

I know it's tough to comprehend that liberals feel and behave similar to you WISE conservadudes..

But we do. Cause we're all just humans

I used to not be scared of heights. Then one day I fell and broke my arm right above the wrist. Nothing can cure that like having a doc and some helpers grind bones together while resetting your arm.
Now I double check every curb height before stepping down so I don't make that mistake again.
